I cannot open JAVA since updating Firefox

I used Java successfully for one web site until my last update with Firefox.  Now Java will not open and a popup explains that the app I tried was not registered with Apple by an identified developer.  Also it says the safest approach is to look for a new version of the app from Mac App Store or check for an alternative from an identified developer.  It also says I can override my security settings and open the app anyway.
Since I used it for so long I don't understand this glitch or what is safe to do.  I cannot find an app for JAVA for mac in the Mac App store.
Any one else have this problem?  Any advice on what is safe to do?  I haven't tried to open it within Safari because I didn't want to use Safari for Java.
Thanks.

The only way to tell which JRE version you have installed in Lion or larter is to run this commend in the Terminal app:
/Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java -version
It should return something like this:
java version "1.7.0_67"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_67-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.65-b04, mixed mode)

  • Cannot open itunes since update.

Since update, I cannot open itunes.  Message says, "itunes Library Extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disck, or you do not have write permission on this disc."  What to do??

Below where you see the Read and Write permissions on that folder there is a little triangle next to the word Details. Scroll down a bit and you'll see a tab to click to Apply to Enclosed Items. If it says you have read and write on the main folder, click the Apply button to make sure that all folders inside the main folder also have both Read and Write permission.

  • Cannot open iMovie since update

Cannot open i movie after most recent update. It runs through all my projects then "quits unexpectedly".
I've tried opening with Option key being held but same problem.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • I cannot open apps since update

I updated my iPad 2 and now I cannot open them. Why is this happening?

If it is your third party apps that are crashing - and not the preinstalled apps - try downloading another app - any free app will do. It seems to reset something in some weird security thing or something like that. Try it.

  • Cannot open pdfs since update.

I recently updated Adobe Reader and since then I can no longer open some of my archived pdf's that used to open just fine.  This is pretty critical especially with tax time coming up.  I get the message below.
Acrobat could not open '*.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
To create an Adobe PDF document, go to the source application.  Then print the document to Adobe PDF.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Yeah, I'm gonna add my frustration to this topic. We have a Vista system running 10.1.4 and a Win7 system running 11.0.01. Both of these systems will no longer open our fax service-generated PDF files. PDF files from other sources still open okay. The help document at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-error-1015-11001-update.html is useless as those directory keys do not appear to exist in either our Win7 or Vista systems and I cannot find an equivalent setting.
Reverting the Win7 system back to 10.1.4 solves the issue. And we have a Vista system running 9.5 which appears to work. So the problem surfaces ONLY when running the latest version and the latest revision on a particular platform. It is highly unlikely that we can get our third-party fax service to rewrite their PDF format anytime soon. So we are at the mercy of Adobe to provide some sort of relief - possibly in the form of a Preferences setting.
UPDATE: In re-reading the article, I caught that if the key did not exist, I needed to create it. That worked on both systems. It was easier to do using the HKCU setting as the structure was already there.

  • Cannot open Numbers since updating to version 3.1.

Solutions in forums don't work. Can I uninstall (how ?) and reinstall without paying for it again ? Will that work ?

I hope your profile is outdated.  Numbers 3.1 needs Mavericks. It won't run on Mountain Lion.
    Solutions in forums don't work.
Which did you try? Holding down the shift key while relaunchig?
Can I uninstall (how ?) and reinstall without paying for it again ? Will that work ?
To uninstall go to Launchpad, find the Numbers icon with the four columns, hold down the option key until the icons quiver, and click the x to delete.  Then go to the Mac App Store and redownload.  You won't have to pay twice.

    Hello,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • Cannot open pdf files in Firefox.

I cannot open pdf files in Firefox. (I can in Chrome).
I tried Menu - Preferences - PDF - Use Adobe Acrobat Professional. Also tried the same with PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4
Clicking on a PDF link just opens a blank page.

When I enter about:preferences#applications <Enter> in the address bar, then for PDF it shows:
pdf File (application/x-download) ... Use Adobe Acrobat Professional
pdf File (application/x-pdf) .... Use Adobe Acrobat Professional
Portable Document Format (PDF) ... Save File'''
I would like all PDF's to open in Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional.
Right now none of the PDF's open at all, so opening in Firefox or any other viewer would be preferred over not showing up at all.

  • Since updating Firefox, Google appears as a string of foreign characers

Hi, since updating Firefox, as the title says, any google page just appears as a string of foreign characters. I've had pages like this before, but only when connecting to live streams. I've disabled all Google-related plugins and addons, but still the problem persists. The solution in the other thread to do with about:config (changing an option to 'true' failed. The only other difference to it is that it won't connect in http any more, just https. Any help?

    Hey TheDefiniteArticle,
We've been tracking this issue for a few days now. What date did it start to occur? Wondering if it's an extension update or something.
    # In the url bar, type about:config and hit enter. Confirm that you will be careful and proceed.
    # In the search bar at the top of the page, past this text without the quotes "network.http.accept-encoding"
    # This should narrow down the values in the config file to a single line. In the column that says "Value" please tell me what you see.
    # This field should read "gzip, deflate" without the quotes. If that is not the value, double click on that field and paste this vale in.
    # Restart Firefox and try a page that has had strange encoding previously.

  • Since updating Firefox I have problems with playing Zynga games

since updating Firefox I have problems with the Zynga games I am playing. The functions often stop working so I have to reboot the game. Also there are often a lot of items missing on my screen so I can't play at all

I have this problem, as well, since the upgrade to 4.0.1. After the upgrade, I found several 'Recovered Files' in my Trash. On taking a look, they all had to do with the Crowdstar app. Happy Aquarium, I believe, but there are several folders of them. Some of them could have to do with Zynga's FarmVille.
However, after repeated problems, I installed Chrome 10. to see if the Facebook apps. would work. They did, without problems. That tells me the folders in Trash shouldn't have anything to do with whether they operate or not but it has something to do with something Firefox has done, or not done, with this upgrade. Frankly, I'm baffled and more than a little annoyed. :/
However, thinking back to the upgrade, it happened suddenly while I was on the phone with AppleCare on another matter. It was they who suggested I needed to upgrade my browser and I did it immediately, on-the-spot. It wasn't what you would call a 'clean install' because I was on the phone but also online with AppleCare. The process went so fast, I remember there were things about the installation that didn't quite seem right and I do remember that the earlier version of Firefox was not removed prior to the upgrade. Is there any chance something could be out-of whack because of this? If so, I need to know how to save my passwords, bookmarks, profile, and any other critical info that would need to be transferred.

i updated firefox and now i can no longer access pogo.com it states that java is unavailable on my pc. When i run test for Java it states that i have most recent update installed and it is operating

I don't know what test you are looking at. You have Java 1.6.0_11, which has known security issues; the current version is 1.6.0_21. For updating see below.
You need to update your plugins. It is important to keep them updated due to continuing security fixes and improvements in those plug-ins:
    * Macromedia Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 11.0
    * Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape (you '''<u>MAY</u>''' need to update)
    * Java Plug-in 1.6.0_11 for Netscape Navigator

#*When the download is complete, exit Firefox (File > Exit)
