I cannot open my network preference

Hi,
I'm working on a Mac OS X 10.6.8, and when I try to open network preferences, it always shows system preferences and says "Loading Network..." on the top. I have this problem after playing with network locations: I deleted all network locations with the exception of "automatic" from network preference panel. As a consecuence of this problem I cannot connect to internet via ethernet, and the wifi in my home does not work... it is important to say that my work depends on internet connection...
I don't have any backup of the system configuration: I mean I cannnot use Time Machine..
I really thank if someone of you can help me !

  • Cannot open mounted network disk

I have 2 Macs on my home's LAN (wired). My G4 Gigabit Ethernet (dual 500mhz) can access the MacBook Pro (running 10.4.6) across the network, no problem. The MBP can access the G4, even mount the hard disk, but when I try to open the disk it opens a blank window and then hangs the finder; only a power cycle will fix it.
I've tried repairing permissions on both machines; all the network settings look fine. Any suggestions as to what else to try would be welcome. Thanks.

Hi, John--thanks for the suggestion. I saw several mentions of SharePoints before I posted my question, but it wasn't clear that it was what I needed. I'll go back and take a closer look now, and see how it does.
    Thanks again,

  • Cannot open network preferences, security, or downloads; blue screen appears

I have recently discovered that I cannot open my network preferences, security, or downloads folder. I do not know what else I am unable to open. For these three, I click upon them and instantly a blue screen appears, quickly followed by my desktop with all programs (except Finder) shut down, as if I was just logging on. The MacBook Pro is not yet a year old. I have recently downloaded the Amazon Cloud and was wondering if this could be causing the spastic behavior. My boyfriend seems to think that it is a corrupt file. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thank you.

The only truths in your statement is the bolded sentence.  Everything else is false.

  • Cannot open the Time Machine Preferences

I'm running into this new problem after upgrading a client MBP to 10.6.2.
I get an error message when trying to open the Time Machine Preferences:
The document "TimeMachine.prefPane" could not be opened. System Preferences cannot open files in the "Mac OS X Preference Pane" format.
    Has anyone seen this?
I'm using Time Capsule for the backups. It is setup to extend a network with another Time Capsule.
    Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That's a new one. It sounds like something has been copied from a PPC Mac, or something's been corrupted so badly it looks like that's where it came from.
Can you do a +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in your Menubar?
If, as you say, TM "stopped working," you'd have to figure out why and fix it, anyway.
Can you make a partition on your TM disk that's at least 10% larger than the data on your internal HD? if so, your best bet might be to download CarbonCopyCloner. It will make a full bootable "clone" of your entire system on a separate partition. It's donationware, available at: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

  • Unable to open network preferences

I'm unable to open the network preferences window inside system preferences. When I try, it just keeps saying "loading network" and nothing happens. I found a couple other discussions about this and trashing a .plist file, but it's not very clear how to solve the problem. Does anyone have any experience with this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

Open /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/, move everything but Boot and PowerManagement plist files to the Desktop (in a folder), restart, and see if you can reliably reset everything.

  • "cannot open dialog preferences/ song settings"?

Hi I hope you can help because I am getting desparate.
I installed Logic Studio V.8.1 on my Imac (lots of ram, 1 year operating with no problems). I have had no trouble until the other day when I started to get the message "cannot open dialog window/preferences" or "song settings" and whenever I try to adjust any or most menu items with "....." after them. The bounce adjustments do not open either, and the core audio does not kick in on startup, the audio coming through the computer speakers. I eliminated and reinstalled Studio and it worked okay for awhile and then went haywire again. By the way I eliminated Logic 7.
Are you aware of what could be the problem? I don´t see anything in the forums. Should I eliminate everything and reinstall 7 and 8 with the Key?
    Thanks for your help
    all the best

  • Cannot erase repeated notice on Network preference

On my iBook G4, when I attempt to open the Network preference, I get a notice that "Your network settings have been changed by another application". When I click on "OK" the notice reappears, and there is no way I can get rid of it in order to change my settings on the preference pane. I have tried quitting all applications, including those shown on Activity Monitor, to no avail.
Any suggestions on how to get rid of the notice would be gratefully received.

    OK...
How was the issue resolved, and why does it have a green star?
If somehow the question was answered by an outside party, it
would be nice to know the process so other readers could solve
a like-issue, should they experience it & read these threads later.
Back to the question, an old one of almost two-years duration in
these forum pages; with resolutions presented since last year...
You can choose in the Security preference panel in Sys Pref, in
a checkbox, to "require password to unlock each secure sys pref."
And if you do that, generally the issue appears to be resolved.
In some cases, the OS X issue also can be resolved at some point
in time where the system is replaced via an "archive & install/update"
so you get a new system folder and yet keep your old user account
and settings; and in the process of the update part of all this, the
latest and most refined update parts are used, Combo updates and
last Security Updates, latest Shockwave, Flash, Quicktime, and the
list goes on. Few small step updates, and the one or two older
security updates which were suspected of causing this issue will be
avoided; in a rebuild of the system folder (only) in this way...
Was your iBook G4 running Tiger and then was upgraded to Leopard?
The issue could have been acquired in Tiger or in Leopard. Similar
issue, and in some cases, slightly different cures were suggested:
' your network settings have been changed by another application '
    http://www.applelinks.com/index.php/forums/viewthread/166/
Other users in these Apple Discussion threads have poised at least
three probable answers to the issue you have recently experienced
and their answers are in these boards. Searchable by google, too.
Sorry if there is any confusion about the way my reply has been worded.
Good luck & happy computing, by foot or horseback!

  • First no airport, then no network preferences available

    Hi!
My problems are getting bigger and bigger:
    1. I could not activate my airport card after installing 10.6
    2. I erased all data in system configuration as other threads told me
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2140025
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=777038
    3. Then my MB said that there is no airport card installed (but it is)
    4. After that I tried to reinstall 10.6 but DVD stopped loading and said it interrupted
    5. Now I´m even not able to open network preferences! It loads, and loads, and loads...
    6. I installed 10.6.1 but nothing happened
I feel like snow leopard (and my attempt to clear the situation) killed network on my MB-Pro.
Does anyone have an idea? HELP ME PLEASE!
    Best regards,
    Hami

    Please Help...!!
I have similar problem with Hamibook.
After installing Snow Leopard OS 10.6, I cannot get into "NETWORK setting" in System Preference.
It just show the endless "loading network" and become "not responding".
During this process the other application also become very slow.
It might be due to incompatibility between the existing HSDPA USB modem driver (GSM modem for wireless internet connection, mobile connect) and OS 10.6.
Is there any idea to delete the incompatible driver without "network setting", e.g. through systems libraries database? (because I cannot open the "network setting" anymore now).
    Thank you in advance.

  • Manually Changing Network Preferences

When I open my network preferences to select the order I would like to connect to networks if my top priority is unavailable will not let me change them or change the order I would like to connect to networks.
I just moved into a new house and I didn't have my own internet set up yet so I used a weak signaled wireless public wifi access until I had my own internet hooked up. Now that I have my own wireless network to connect to I do not need the free wifi network. So the problem is that everytime I turn on my laptop the public wifi, with the weak signal, connects to my macbook instead of my home wireless network that has a stronger faster signal.
When I open network preferences and go to where to change them, I can see the order of preferences but it will not let me alter their order. They appear in a light grey color and are un-clickable.
Any help or suggestions would be extremely appreciated!!
    Thanks

Start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, restart as usual and post the results.

How to restart base station from airport utility? I used to be able to do it remotely
I currently use a Mac Pro 10.8.4 and have a time machine for wireless 6.3 (630.34). Sometimes I cannot connect to the internet and use network preferences to diagnose the issue. This results in being told to restart the wireless. The airport utility includes the drop down option of restarting but is not clickable so I can't choose it.
With my prior macbook and same time capsule, etc  if i had problems connecting to the internet I would run network diagnostics to help out. This included clicking on the airport utility ---> base station --> restart. This worked most of the time.
Bottom line, is there something I am missing in not being able to restart the wi-fi remotely? ]
    Thanks in advance

You are likely forgetting a step.
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon
Click Edit in the small window that appears
Now click the Base Station menu.....top of the screen....not the Base Station "tab" in the center of the screen
    Click Restart

  • Sharing Preference pane "Cannot Open" error?

    Hi all,
Im running Tiger 10.4.6 on a MacBook Pro 2.0, connecting to the Internet through an ADSL router via an Airport Express base station, everything fully updated.
Suddenly, when trying to open the "Sharing" preference-pane, I get this error:
    Preferences Error
You cannot open Sharing preferences pane on this
computer. Contact the developer of this software
    for a newer version.
I haven't installed or updated anything in the last few days, and it worked earlier today.
I have tried restarting, and deleted the following preferences, to no avail:
    com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    com.apple.networkConfig.plist
    Any ideas?
    TIA,
    Thomas
    MacBook Pro 2.0 / 2Gig RAM / 100gb, 7200 rpm   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hello again, and thank you for your replies, and sorry for the late response.
First off; I have installed the latest 10.4.7 Combo Updater, but that did not install a new SharingPref.prefPane. I even removed the old one, before running the freshly downloaded Combo installer.
Actually, I did the exact same thing a week ago - same result.
So, in the meantime I had some work I needed to finish, so I didn't have time to investigate further, until this morning. Where I, much to my surprise, found the SharingPref.prefPane back in /Macintosh HD/System/Library/PreferencePanes/ and it was still the wrong version!
So "something" must be installing the wrong - old - SharingPref.prefPane. Well, I took a peek at my install log, searched for "sharing", and lo and
    behold!
The mystery is - somewhat - solved. The old SharingPref.prefPane comes from and old Apple Remote Desktop 2.2 installer, that contains an installer called PantherSharing.pkg. See search from Console.app below.
What puzzles me, is the fact that I installed the wrong (old 2.2) version of ARD, to monitor a couple of servers, and of course uninstalled that version, and installed 3.0, the minute I realized my error.
How can that old installer keep "updating" my system, even after I've removed the old ARD? It's as if something is running the receipt, witch I funny enough, can't find on my system anymore.
The dates don't match either, or they do, but I would expect more entries from last week, where I removed the old SharingPref.prefPane and it mystically appeared again this morning.
The receipt must have run in the last week, but I can't find anything in my logs - install.log.0.gz OR install.log.
Maybe running a reciept dosen't get logged?
Ohh well Anyway - beneath is a copy of my log, and the question now is; How do I get the correct Pref-pane, when the Combo Installer doesn't install it?
Thanks for your help everybody, and shawnhm, thanks for Sharing my Pane ... Thank you, Thank you, I'm here all week

I cannot open the general pane in system preferences. I get a message saying there is an error. Any suggestions?

The first thing I would suggest is for you to go to the folder containing your catalog, using your system browser. There will be a folder that has the extension .lrdata. Delete that folder, and then try to start Lightroom. If that doesn't work, replace your catalog with your most recent backup.
