I cannot play cd or dvd on my disc drive

It is Macbook pro 13-inch with 4GB 1333MHz DDR3, OS X 10.9.4 (13E28), bought in late 2011. Today I have some DVD and CD of my coursebook and want to play it on my Macbook pro, but I could not even insert it into the drive first. Then I go to System Preference and click on CD&DVD Player. It was inserted, and it spinned and rejected. I wonder what happened? Is it OS update issue? Or Hardware issue?
PS: It was once dropped from a learning table in my class. I am curious if that is the reason I cannot play CD or DVD.
Please kindly help me find the solution.

Lens cleaning DVDs are cheap (on Amazon you will pick one up for less than $/£10. They are normal discs but on the underside, they have small microfibre bristles that brush over the lens as it rotates. Granted as your drive doesn't seem to want to read discs, this may be futile, but worth a shot. Just make sure you buy one which is PC/Mac compatible.
As for a replacement drive, if you are covered by an Apple warranty you should book some Genius time in-store. If you are handy with a screwdriver, then replacing it yourself is fairly easy and there are plenty of instruction videos on Youtube.
All depends how much you use the drive. Your best option might be just to buy an external USB drive that you can pick up for next to nothing and just plug straight in.

  • Cannot play Mavericks created DVD

Ok...here is a better description of the problem.  My Mac is running OSX 10.9.1.  I used IPhoto to creat a slideshow of family pictures with music.  I followed all the prompts and directions.  When the slideshow was done I exported it to my HD.  The format of the slideshow that was created is identified as  HD (720P).M4V. I opened the Finder and inserted a blank DVD R.  I dragged the slideshow file onto the DVD icon as directed.  I burned the slideshow to the DVD.  I then tried to play the DVD on my computer and on my Television.  Both rejected it.  The computer sent me to something called "Any Video Converter Lite"  I asked that app to change the DVD to an NTSC Standard format.  I still cannot play the resulting product.  THIS USED TO BE SO EASY with pre Mavericks software.  Anyone have a clue as to how to cope with this?

You cannot burn a DVD capable of being played on a standard DVD via a Finder burn. That only creates a data disk. You need software such as iDVD or Toast to burn a video DVD. All a converter such as the one you used does is change the format of the video to MPEG-2, the standard for DVDs, and that I believe requires the Platinum version of that software. Even so, you still need software that can burn the disk in the format used for video DVDs.

The DVD Player application does not play CDs. It's for playing DVD movies.
If you have further questions or need additional help, post in the forum for your version of Mac OS X or your model of Mac. As diesel said, this forum is for questions about iTunes for Windows.

  • Can HP 15-d103tx play dual layer dvd or Blueray discs

I would like to know if my HP 15 d103tx notebook can play dual layer dvd's and blueray discs.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the product specs page.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c04206739&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...
All it states is it comes with a SuperMulti DVD burner.
It will play dual layer disks if you see a small DL on the DVD bezel.
It will definitely not play blu-ray disks.

  • DVD stuck in disc drive

    Hi everybody,
I currently have a DVD stuck in my disc drive. I fell asleep yesterday night watching the DVD using the "DVD Player" application that is the default for playing a DVD. When I woke up, DVD Player wouldn't quit and I had to force quit the program. I didn't use the DVD Player for the rest of the day, but in the evening, I tried to reopen DVD Player to finish the DVD. It said: "There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]" I tried to eject the disc by pressing the "eject" button on the keyboard, but that did absolutely nothing. Now the DVD is stuck in the drive, not showing up on my computer, and I am not able to eject it. What can I do to get it out?
    Thanks
    -Marsha

Apart from the fact that you would need to use the mouse button, rather than the MBP's trackpad button, no, it shouldn't make any difference. Try shutting down the Mac (rather than restarting), then booting it up again while holding down the primary mouse button.
Another trick is to start up Disk Utility and , if the disc is visible, eject it from there.
Sometimes, if the problem is actually due to the drive itself not being recognised as present, a "PRAM reset" will make it appear again.
On PowerPc Macs you can achieve the same result using "open firmware" commands, but unfortunately these don't work with the Intel models.

  • Cannot play region 2 DVD

Hi all. Very new to the Mac world. So far I love it:)
The migration from a PC was painfull but I need help with this topic.
I have quite a few DVD's from Greece. I can watch them at my Home ent. system since I was able to unlock my DVD player and at my Windows box I had a couple of programs that could override the restriction (DVD region free, dvd genie etc).
Now my Mac will not play these movies (I get the usual message that I have 4 changes allowed which is standard on every computer dvd drive)
Is there a workaround on this problem?
Is there software for the mac that will do the same thing?
If everything fails I guess I could buy a super drive from Europe and install it.
Anyway your help will be greatly appreciated.

You might try VLC player, but newer drives are tougher on any platform.

  • Pavilion dv8 cannot play cd or dvd

I have a Pavilion DV8 ( Model NQ226AV) laptop with a cd/dvd/bluray drive ( BD MLT UJ240) that cannot read any media. It spins and spins and does nothing.  I disabled the drivers and reboot and windows reenabled the drivers. I tried to read the disk from command line and shows no media.  Help

Try booting from it using a bootable disk like a Windows install disk or your recovery media. This will isolate whether it is hardware (no boot) or a software/Windows problem. You might also try a laser cleaner disk you can buy at any electronics store. If it will not boot and cleaning does not good it will be necessary to replace the drive. Are you  under warranty? If so, obviously HP will replace it and if not figure the drive would cost around $100 on the internet and is very easy to repace.

  • Re: Satellite L650 PSK1JA: cannot play 2nd Life due to old GPU driver

    Hi,
i have a windows 7, Toshiba Satellite L650 PSK1JA-0K4017, video card is ATI mobility Radeon HD5650 and Im unable to use second life ( everything in the worlds is a pink colour) and its unusable because i need an updated display driver
I have tried the AMD website and am unable to install their drivers as they say they are not compatible and i need to obtain my driver from the manufacturer (toshiba)
Trouble is that Toshiba display driver is very outdated 15/03/2010
When are they ever going to update this particular driver and if not does anyone know of a workaround for this issue.
Why is the driver so old.?? If i cant fix this issue i'll be purchasing a new laptop and it definitely wont be a Toshiba again. Useless if they never update their drivers.

I think you have to understand that the L650 is a 2010 / early 2011 model - support would have been offered through the product life cycle and for some time afterwards. Most vendors will issue updated drivers where it solves a problem NOT just because to component manufacturer has "tweaked" it and made it version 2.1.1.1.1 rather than 2.1.1.1.0 ie "why fix something that isnt broken" which can make new issues
In saying that i have updated AMD drivers using the AMD reference drivers many times on Toshiba's where the Official Toshiba driver is outdated and have not had an issue, even if there was one you just boot into safe made and reinstall teh original driver - either the one the one the unit shipped with in the TOSAPINS folder or download the last Official update from Toshiba prior to trying the AMD sources driver.
Or sometimes you can download the latest AMD Catalyst Control software from Toshiba - just choose a newer model ie L50D - this gives you the option of either unpacking the driver to a Temp location where you can manually install OR automatic install - automatic install may check the model and fail so you may need to manually install as per previous post.
just bear in mind Toshiba has one of the best reliability scores in the industry - choosing another brand due to 3+ year old unit not having Official current drivers is totally your decision, and buying a brand that is more likely to have a major fault within 3 years is a choice you are welcome to make - from my eperience the choice is easy :)

  • Cannot play DVDs

Just noticed that I cannot play any Movie DVDs - Warning Box: Disk Insertion - The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. Ignore Eject
I have looked at similar type threads but no luck. This is happening with any Movie DVD - Commercial and Burnt. Will mount Data DVDs but not Movies so cannot even play with other apps like VLC.
Have reloaded 10.4.6 combo updater - removed com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist from Library > Preferences. All Settings look OK to me.
I am using an iMac 2.1GHz Power PC G5 20". The inbuilt superdrive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K05
    Any ideas?

    2.1GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi, Peter.
    1. This problem seems to have affected a few folks, and solutions are thin on the ground. I've not seen the problem myself, so I decided to do some research. This Google search turned up two ideas:1.1. Do you have, or have you recently added, a Lexar JumpDrive Secure? This topic on another forum indicated that a drive associated with that Lexar device caused the DVD problem for several folks. While it's not clear from the topic if the affected users were running Tiger, several noted the JumpDrive Secure was the cause and removing its related software solved the problem.
If that's the case, then either check Lexar for updates or uninstall the Lexar driver using their instructions. See my "Uninstalling applications" FAQ for important advice on uninstalling software.
1.2. This Google cached item from a MacInTouch thread suggested resetting Open Firmware. See the item therein from 31 March 2006. I think this might be a better approach if the optical drive wasn't working with any media, but it may be worth a shot.2. If none of the above helps, let's see if Console can provide more clues: immediately after the problem occurs, check these Console logs for clues.
    3. As FYI, the problem is being reported by diskarbitrationd, the daemon responsible for detecting and mounting disks. A recent version of the source code that contains the specific error message can be seen here, but it offers no particular clues as it just seems to handle the error message processing.
    Good luck!

  • Why can't I play self burned DVD-R disks?

i cannot play self burned DVD+R disks in my Mac PC. Can i load something to play it with?
Thanks, because all my VHS early childrens self made movies  are on this media.
    grt Charles

Were your DVDs burned/converted into VIDEO_TS DVDs?
It could also be that you ptical drive has trouble with the DVD+R discs. Some hardware has trouble with the +R discs. I personally have had some trouble with the +R discs in the past. Since I've permanently switched to DVD-R, all problems have disappeared.

  • HT5517 i have apple tv and i could play my dvd on my macbook pro but now i cannot i get a black and white box i have vlc which apple store put on for me but thats no good because the film keeps jumping. i am wondering why i cannot play from dvd to apple t

i have had apple tv since last april and i could play films from dvd player from mac book  but for some reason this has stopped working from dvd player when i put the dvd player on apple tv i get a black and white screen i can hear the film but i cannot see it, i went to my local store and they but vlc on for me but its terrible the film always jumps every time.
Can anyone now the reason this has happen as i watch film offern but its driving me crazy why i cannot play from macbook pro to dvd player. i have been told it was a sercuity problem with the films so do i use itunes every time i need to watch a film if so then apple tv is a waste of money thanks please help

This is supposed to happen, licensing issue mean that Apple can't AirPlay protected content to other devices. You might try VLC instead of Apples built in DVD player.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion, i cannot play any video at all, be it directly off a DVD, or through streaming like youtube, BBC iplayer or even off my iTunes library

after upgrading to mountain lion, i cannot play any video at all, be it directly off a DVD, or through streaming like youtube, BBC iplayer, love film or even directly off my iTunes library. in each case, all i get is a black screen and no error message.

Hi, i had the same problem and tried this,
Somehow iTunes is tied to Safari. Try this:
Someone mentioned to clear all website data and history in safari, stupid but it was either this or the below that fixed it
    or this,
    Disable Wi-Fi Networking Services
Many users have reported that they’ve solved their issues by disabling Wi-Fi Networking under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. This only relates to your location being used for Wi-Fi Networking, so it doesn’t disable Wi-Fi entirely.
Please let me know if it works.

  • Cannot play DVD movies in Windows XP

Does anyone know of any driver that I have to download in order to play just regular old DVD movies with Boot Camp? The CD-ROM aspect of the drive works fine, as I play games all the time...but when I try to play a movie it says that it cannot....has anyone found a fix to this?

Lol well unfortunately it didn't, I installed it, popped a movie in, and this is the messege that i got:
Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.
It was just a regular DVD movie bought from the store, not a burnt one or anything...I'm confused...

  • Cannot Play Interactive DVD on MacBook

Am completely new to MAC, so please forgive me if this is a completely stupid question:
For some reason I cannot get my MacBook to play an interactive tutorial DVD. It plays all other DVD's I own without any problems, but for this one it gives "+supported disk not found+" message. I am sure nothing is wrong with the DVD, as it plays normally on my PC and my TV's DVD player. Spent the whole day trying to figure out what's wrong but still cannot.
Should I just download RealOne Player for MAC and try to play it there? Or is there any kind of codec I need to install?
Please help, as this is driving me nuts and I really need to be able to play this DVD on my MAC in front of my staff tomorrow!

Apple Support told me that most likely that DVD was formatted specifically for Windows, therefore it would not be played on MAC.
