I cannot put my iMac to sleep using the power button since the Mavericks upgrade.

As the title states, I can no longer put my computer to sleep using the power button. I have to put it to sleep using the mouse. I miss the convenience of the power button. The window for energy saver is not like the display in support, it is missing the "Allow the power button to put the computer to sleep" option. Very strange. I am running an older desktop (2009) with Mavericks, fully updated. 10.9.4

A workaround is to setup a keystroke in the System/Keyboard/Shortcuts preference pane to sleep the Mac.  Any function key or key combination will work.

I've tried all those. But nothing works. The phone seems to be shut down. But it is not. When i get it out of my pocket, for example to call someone, i touch to main button but nothing happens.I solve it by pushing the power button and the main button together just for a couple of seconds, as its said so in the forums.
also, people told me that they were calling me, my phone was ringing but i didnt answer?...i checked it for millions of times, it seems to be shut down, but its normally not.then i push the buttons together and the apple sign comes on the screen.it searches for the network.and it works.
but i do not see any calls, texts anything.but for the others, they say my phone seems to be workin.
I thought it was 'cause of the 3G is switched on but when I turn 3G off, it does the same thing.it seems to be offline all the time.

Since it will not boot then a hardware test can't be run. You could try FireWire Target Disk Mode and if it works then access from another Mac to run tests on the new drive. You could also try installing the OS X software from the host computer. If this does not work then professional help should be considered.

    Hi Team,
Is there any way programmatically to disable the screen shot capture using Home + power button in the iPad device. We need to avoid the screen capture option due to security reason.
    thanks ,

    Hi Peace, Clyde,
Thanks for information. Using the API  UIApplicationUserDidTakeScreenhotNotification (iOS7)  send the notification after the screenshot taken.  Using this api is it possible to block the screen shot caputure option.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • I was using my Mac and it started flashing white and didn't let me hit any keys or buttons. It didn't stop until I hit the power button on the back of the computer.

I have an iMac with a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, a 8 GB memory, and OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.2.
I was wondering if what happened with my computer could be a virus or something else. It's only a few months old and it's never happened before.
    Thanks.

It's not a virus. Don't seek a solution for a problem that doesn't exist. Pursuing that option will only lead to real problems.
Contact AppleCare using the Contact Us link below right.
Assuming that you restarted it and it appears to working properly again, I doubt they will have anything to offer, but you ought to create a case for future reference. It may never happen again, which means you will never know the reason. If it happens again though, even once, insist that Apple fix it.

  • I am trying to get my Dad's computer to turn on.  It's a 17" IMac that was bought around 2007.  Today it just won't turn on.  When u hold the power button down, the white light comes on in the lower right hand of the computer but screen stays dark.

It have tried pulling cord out if the computer and then plugging it back ...it still won't turn on.   Pls help...next step

Try using the resetting SMC procedure
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
You may have done something similar already, but do it precisely as described.  You should disconnect ALL peripheral devices, except for Apple keyboard and mouse.
Also, when you plug it back in, if the iMac is currently plugged into an old (or overcrowded) power strip (surge suppressor), try connecting it directly to a wall outlet by itself.

  • I cannot wake up IMAC from sleep at times

Recently when my IMAC is either intentionally placed in Sleep Mode of when it goes to that state through inactivity, I find that I am unable to wake the machine up. The sleep mode indicator like goes out, the machine is running, but, nothing can bring the screen up short of pulling out the power cord, reinserting it into a source of power and then pressing the power button in the rear of the unit. The problem is not constant in that it does not occur all the time.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.

  • Why won't my Power Button allow the iMac to sleep anymore?

When trying to make the imac sleep, the power button no longer works to allow me to do that? Can i ask if anyone had the same issue and has fixed it? I did the SMC thing but It still wont go to sleep.
    Thanks

If none of that helps, it could be your power button needs fixing.  Mind you, I don't like using the power button, since it can just as easily accidently act like you are powering down without saving anything, create a scenario where your directory may get damaged.

  • Hi Guys! I have an Imac with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and bought a wireless keyboard. Unfortunately I can´t use the volume buttons on the keyboard. I have checked almost everything, does anyone have any good idea?

Hi Guys! I have an Imac with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and bought a wireless keyboard. Unfortunately I can´t use the volume buttons on the keyboard. I have checked almost everything, does anyone have any good idea?

    Hello, try kguy's solution here...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2332457?start=0&tstart=0
First, Go to System Preferences, keyboard, and click on the Keyboard tab
Make sure that the checkbox by "Use all F1, F2, etc, keys as standard function keys" is NOT checked.
Next, click on the Show All button, and select Bluetooth. You should see your Apple Wireless Keyboard listed on the left side of the screen.
Click once to select it, and then click the gear icon at the bottom of the box, and choose Disconnect.
Power off the keyboard by holding down the power button on the keyboard for a few seconds until it show "keyboard Off on your imac screen, then turn it back on again.
The device should appear once again in your bluetooth list.
Try out the volume control buttons now, and see if that cleared things up

  • TS4080 apple thunderbolt display image on display intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys. Rebooting by pressing the power button resolves issue.

My apple thunderbolt display (which I purchased 1.5 years ago; OS 10.7.5 Mac Mini) intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys, so am thinking it is a hardware problem with the display. Rebooting by pressing the power button turns the screen back on, but the same phenomenon has occurred several times. Could this be a software issue, or do I need to have my display repaired? Your feedback would be appreciated.

Hi ED, tough to tell, but it does sound like it's waking with the bonk, just not displaying.
    Long shot but...
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
    Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
    Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
        1.    Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
        2.    Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

  • HT201150 How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?

How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?
With the position of the power button on the Retina MacBooks, any mistake turns off the screen in the middle of a presentation or any activity using a projector or big screen — a huge waste of time to wake up the display, enter password, have the projector sync back, watch audience disconnecting from what was being discussed, etc.
This is very annoying, and seems to add to the increasing collection of options Apple decided to make by itself instead of allowing the user to choose.
Come on Apple guys, I'm using my Mac because I want options and lots of preferences to tweak to my needs.
If I needed the lobotomized version I'd be using my iPad!
Any way (official or hack) to change this button back to its proper funcionality?
    Thanks!

Not what you want, but you can get the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by holding the power button

If you want to see the shut down dialog like previous OS, press and hold the power button for 1.5 seconds.
