I cannot quit iPhoto, shut down or restart my computer.

I'm reluctant to force quite because I don't want to lose any photos. Can I do this without losing data? Or is there another solution?

Actually Force quitting is dangerous and may cause library corruption and should be used as a last result - any idea why you can not quit? What strange happened? What did you just do? any other information? How long has it been impossible to quit?
Force quit may be required but best to explore first

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I have a desktop HP Pavilion Intel Core Quad
its Windows 7 and my internet service provider is Time Warner.
It is not a wireless connection.
For a few days now everytime I shut down or restart my computer my internet service goes out and I am unable to access the intenet. I get the error message "unidentified network no internet access" I do not even want to shut off my computer for fear of losing the internet access. The most recent time this has happened I called my ISP to reset my connection. I have never had to do this before so I am not sure whay is going on?

Your PC won't automatically choose a public network since your PC is not autonomous.
If you are using wired CAT5 connection, then your network is whatever internal adress the internet modem or router has provided. If the only thing your PC is connected to is your Time Warner router then the identified network comes from the router.

Cannot quit preview/shut down computer

I cannot quit preview. Force quit does not work and neither does killall command in Terminal. This means I also cannot restart or shutdown the computer. Holding down the power button did not work either. What can I do at this point?

Garbage which operating system are you using? Have you tried using the Task Manager/Activity Monitor to close the offending application/process?

I either kill the task using task manager; or I just re-boot my pc. sometimes just best to completely shut down your pc, unplug the power for a few minutes, and restart. If you're like me and leave your pc in sleep mode for days or weeks at a time, a lot build up, which may cause some programs to hand for quite a while.

I have Windows OS. I downloaded Firefox yesterday. Every time I open the Firefox browser, it starts in safe mode. I have restarted my machine several times -- Firefox still starts in Safe Mode. My favorites from IE copied to Firefox fine, and Firefox is now my default browser...it just keeps opening in Safe Mode.

I downloaded the toolbar. When I was done using the computer, I put it to "sleep." The next time I "woke" the computer and went to Firefox, the toolbar was gone. When I downloaded the toolbar again, I got a box in the upper left hand corner of the screen stating Firefox BLOCKED the toolbar, and did I want to allow it. There was NO option to allow always-it's just a one time deal. When I shut down for the day, I expected it to remain, but no-next time I fired up firefox, NO TOOLBAR. I pulled up Inbox dollars again, clicked on download toolbar, got the box stating it's blocking the toolbar, etc, etc, etc. Unless Firefox upgrades daily, or in some cases, several times in one day, I'm going to stick with my description that the toolbar magically disappears EVERY TIME I OPEN

Well I have been at this for 3 days trying to get Iphoto to load. I have uninstalled, installed over and over again the ILife. Today I even downloaded Iphoto for 15 dollars from the App Store. Sometimes (about 60% of the time) when I shut-down or restart the computer normally, it retsarts saying it has recovered from an error. I have nothing opening at login, and I have checked everything in the Disk Ultility... all seems ok.

It's a strange little anomaly, computer seems to work fine, never crashes, all programs are running fine, but when I do a restart or a shutdown it restarts with the "recovering from an error..." message. It happens all the time, even if I've opened nothing (just started up and then shutdown, [I have nothing starting up at login]). I have checked all the permissions and verified the disk... Everything checks out ok. Only 'non-legit' program or app I have is the VLC player, but I don't see how that could affect the shutdown or restart process.

Forcing a shutdown can cause hard drive directory corruption. You should start from the install disc and repair the disk with Disk Utility.
When other methods don't work, holding the power button to force a shutdown is the only way. You can try control-F12 (opens the Restart, Sleep, Shutdown dialog box) and then press return to shutdown or control-command-F12 (quit all applications and restart).
If just one application is hanging try using Force Quit (command-option-esc). That will also work to force quit the Finder if it hangs.

thank you, I am now trying the kernal panic mode you recommended. I thought that of the ram as when I first tried turning it on today, I was getting repetative beeps (1 beep each time), but both rams were secure. Then it finally started up and was doing this. I'll update back as soon as i've tried this. Fingers crossed, thank you for your help
