I cannot quit safari, causing me not to be able to shut down my computer

I did a software update, afterwards I had to restart my computer, while safari is open the quit option is grey and cannot click, I try quitting from the dock, that option does not work either. Now i cannot restart or quit my computer. Please help.

Have you tried to force quit Safari? You can pull up the force quit menu by pressing option command escape at the same time.

I am having problems with Firefox. When I click on the shortcut, or the .exe file nothing happens. I check task manager to see if it is running and it does not show Firefox is running.

I tried to shut down my Mail application and it does not shut down. Now they system is hung and I am not able to shut down the computer. I keeps telling me to close down mail first but, is was requested only won't happen. Can't open mail either. Help.

Can you answer another question. Cant send out mail from Mail only receive and read mail, Could this be something to do with my set-up as think Husband may have fiddles with some options not knowing what he was doing?

I have an Imac. When I click to open google maps a permeable but dark screen covers my monitor screen and I get a note that tells me to shut down the computer and restart it. This hasn't helped. Everything else seems to work fine.

When I attempt to open google maps in Firefox on my Imac, a dark screens descends over my monitor screen and a note tells me there's been an error, no number is noted, and that I need to turn off and restart my computer. This doesn't help, but everything else works, including google maps in other browsers.

This is a kernel panic.
First verify that Firefox is fully updated including all extensions.
If this fails to fix....
Restart in Safe Boot mode then open Firefox.
* shutdown
* start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
* after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
* keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears
* now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)
* eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT
* login and open Firefox.

I close Firefox and then try to shut down my computer, but Windows says that Firefox is still running. It does not show up as running in Task Manager. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times with same result.

I have also had problems starting Firefox. I click the icon and nothing happens. That problem is intermittent. The Windows message that Firefox is still running after I have closed the Firefox browser keeps occurring and I do not know how to remedy this.

The one thing that is locking up fire fox is the plug ins. You have to check to see if a plug in is locking up firefox first of all.
To see the processes press : CTRL+ALT+DEL. then click the tab marked "Processes" Then look for Fire Fox and click on it. Click the Yes button when the warning box show up.
Then do the say for "Plug-in Container" I believe that is called.
this is because all ads are now flash ads or video ads. They lock my computer up all the time.
When the CTRL+ALT+DEL are pressed. Keep this minimized and you can see if your computer is running at 100% memory near the clock. If the box is totally green, you are running a lot of programs on your system. Check the processes and find out what is not needed. Also watch your virtual memory. Rule of thumb is 1.5x total memory.
Then now it would be able to shut down the computer the right way.

If you are still not able to quit Safari, or shutdown/restart your Mac, I would force quit the application with any of these instructions that work for you:

I dl lion yesterday, I have all latest updates. Now when I try to Quit Safari it will not allow me. It only lets me press the "red dot".

Several ways to force quit when you can't quit an app normally.
Go to your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then from the drop down menu select Force Quit.
You can also force quit an app using the Activity Monitor app located in /Applications/Utilities.
You should be able to shut down your Mac by holiding down the power button until the screen goes black. Then restart as usual.

You should be able to uninstall that AOL toolbar extension while running in the Firefox SafeMode.

Cannot quit safari...quit option grayed out

Starting today I am unable to quit safari by either "right clicking" or via the drop down option on the toolbar. my "Quit" option is grayed out. I have tried a re-start but to know avail. Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

You can force quit Safari.
Click your Apple menu icon  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Force Quit.
Or, press Option + Command + Esc to force quit apps.

I recently updated my macbook pro to Maverick, there was another system update so I updated and once I did I noticed that my safari wouldn't quit. I was unable to shutdown. I finally force quit safari and was able to shut down. Now it won't turn back on!

The tabsacross my browser didn't have little x's to close them I neede to right click to close the tab

Now my computer is having trouble turning on. It stays at the white screen with the gray apple in the middle and the small circular loading bar. and flickers between that and black.
