I cannot re-install firefox 4 due to previous version upgrade problem

when i try to remove firefox 4 so that i can re-install it it tells me to restart my computer to upgrade the previous version therefore i cannot install

What exactly isn't working?
Due to security vulnerabilities, rolling back to Firefox 4.0.1 is not recommended.
If Firefox disabled some add-ons (especially extensions), it likely is because they include a list of compatible Firefox versions and haven't yet been updated for Firefox 5. If they worked on Firefox 4, there is a very good chance they will work on Firefox 5.
You can force Firefox to ''ignore'' add-on version restrictions by (what else) installing an add-on. Then you can test whether the add-ons important to you actually work in Firefox 5.

  • How to install firefox, when trying says previous version detected must reboot. Stuck in infinite loop

Trying to install newly downloaded firefox (had previously removed about a month ago through programs uninstall), however when I try to run the install, it says a previous version is detected, and the system must reboot. System reboots, but install never happens, I go to run the download again, and it appears I'm stuck in an infinite loop. I can't get latest version firefox to install

I succeeded in installing Firefox after getting this message.
I went to add/remove programs to verify that Firefox wasn't on the list, then I went to the program files directory and deleted the Mozilla/Firefox directory that was left over from the uninstall.
I attempted to reinstall Firefox and, voila, it installed with no issues.
I know it can be dangerous to delete a program directory, but if you have properly uninstalled the program itself and it isn't in the add/remove list (but still exists in the program directory), deleting the parent directory for the program should affect system performance.
I have done this dozens of times over the years and never had a problem (I have NEVER deleted a system directory though. That would be a BAD idea).
    I hope this helps.

You are trying to install a version of Airport Utility earlier than 6.0, correct? If so see the following: Installing the Old AirPort Utility (Version 5.6) on Mountain Lion | frank.is.

I am trying to update to iTunes 10 to us my new iPad, but I can not remove a corrupted? "apple software update" program... I can get everything else off, but due to "previous version" of software update it will not continue.
I stopped in to see one of the genius at the local store who referred me to "Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable" (I am trying to install it on a Windows XP System)
The last version on iTunes on my PC was iTunes 7.
    Thanks for your help,

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

    As stated in 1.:
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
Obviously, it will not harm your computer provided you follow the instructions. However, if you don't post your results in the thread where you were given those instructions, then the person helping you cannot help you further. As he asks at the end, "please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created."

  • After installing firefox 4.0 I've been having problems with rundll error on startup. Norton scan is finding a high risk malware.

Last week I installed firefox 4.0 beta & the next time the computer was restarted a rundll error window appeared that said windows cannot locate file. This file showed up in the startup programs. When norton finds this which is every 1 or 2 days it removes it after a restart but the error & malware comes back. I went back to firefox 3.6 but still have this problem. Can you help?
    Thanks, Dennis

It seems unusual that Norton should block and remove firefox updates. Having said that I was posting in a thread about problems with Norton a few days ago see [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/789617#answer-143767 thread] ''"I down loaded fromFFox the latest down - norton 360 - stopped the down load - stated not to use it - asked to stop running the program - I click yes thinking a problem now on my other computer I cant use FFox as a Browers -"''
I use Norton (NIS) and received only a mild advisory on one Firefox update. I have Windows XP with Firefox3.6.15 & 4RC installed

  • Trouble installing 5th gen. due to previous ipod

I'm not exactly sure what is going on, I previously had an older 40gb ipod and it seems to me that there are some remaining files that cannot be deleted in order for me to fully install my new 5th gen 30gb video ipod. I have tried deleting all pre-existent files and even the music in my library in order to fix this problem, I also went through and uninstalled all the older software I could find. I then went to the apple website and attempted to download the newer 7.0 version, but it continues to say that there are itunes files that cannot be deleted, and then instructs me to get in touch with my technical support group. I would appreciate it greatly if there was someone with common knowledge of this problem to help me out. Thanks.

Well then I'd be glad to clarify the issue up for you. When I try to install the new 7.0 version of itunes, an error comes up almost immediately and it states, "previous files cannot be deleted, contact local technician group." This being the problem obviously due to previous files that exist from my 2nd generation 40gb ipod which I can not delete. So what is the problem and how can I completely delete all of the previous files? I've tried manually going through and doing it myself, through add and remove programs also.

  • I Beta tested 4.0 RC1 and now can not upgrade to 4.0. Error message is need to reboot to complete prior instalation. Have removed all previous versions of Firefox, rebooted and still same error message.

I Beta tested up to and including 4.0 RC1 without major problems. However I can not now upgrade to 4.0. Same error message time and again, "need to reboot to complete prior upgrade instalation". I rebooted several times, then tried first removing all previous versions of Firefox using both MS Add/Remove and then iolo System Mechanic, then again downloading 4.0. Even after rebooting same error message. I can not therefore install/use Firefox.

    Do a clean (re-)install:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • I am trying to log into a website "Northern Carping" which until I installed Firefox I could log into with no problems and I can still log into this site on my laptop (which doesn't have Firefox)???

I am a member of a forum www.northerncarping.co.uk/ in which I am experiencing problems trying to log in since I installed FireFox. I also have a laptop which I don't use FireFox on and have no problems. Could it be something to do with firefox?

  • I can't install Firefox for MOTOROLA Milestone A853 version 2.2.1

Can't install Firefox for Milestone A853

Sorry, Firefox is not available for the Motorola Milestone because it does not have the required amount of RAM, and has a bug that causes the entire phone to freeze when Firefox uses too much RAM. For details, see: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android#System_Requirements

  • Version 4 will not open a .ft3 file by using the Fronimo software installed on my computer; all previous versions of Firefox would open the file.

I frequently us a website called gerbode.net. This site has many files with the extension of .ft3. These files can be opened with a program called "Fronimo" which I have on my computer.
All the previous versions of Firefox would open these files directly from the website by using my software...no longer. Actually, Firefox partially opens the text portion of the file. Internet Explorer still opens the files just fine. ''''''I would rather not use Internet Explorer'''''' as I have been a faithful Firefox user for years.

Going to Help>About, what version is listed?

  • How do I opt out of this Firefox and return to previous version?

I simply wish to return to the previous version of Firefox at this time. I am not prepared right now to learn a whole lot of new information. I would appreciate your assistance in just taking one step back at this juncture. I will update later. Sincerely,
    S. L. Yadon

On the one hand, it doesn't take long to customize the UI to match the appearance of Firefox 3.
On the other hand, it doesn't take that long to revert to Firefox 3.6, either. Here's the process to roll back:
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
    Close Firefox 4.
You could install Firefox 3.6 over it (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this myself!

  • How do i remove a firefox update, to a previous version

an add on no longer works since i updated firefox to 22, how do i put back firefox to the previous version, before the update

Please refer to this page before taking further action, please: http://mzl.la/MOvsag
If you still need to downgrade to the version you were using before the upgrade, there is a website (linked on the page I just asked you to check out) listing the older versions. You might be successful in reverting back to an older version by installing Firefox from that page.
