I cannot re-open Firefox, or open another window, without rebooting

I get a message indicating that Firefox is already operating and to either close the program or reboot. I cannot access the supposedly open program, nor can I open another window. I am using Windows 7. The problem repeats itself even after rebooting.

Every time I open Firefox I get another window that opens over the homepage. It is almost blank with a few lines at the top of the page and the words user registration. It has been happening ever since Firefox updated on my computer yesterday, even after uninstalling and reinstalling.

Nope. Apple simply removed this feature without any warning. Why? Who knows. This really reduces the iTunes workflow for many of us. I have yet to see any offical Apple comment on this blunder, one of many in iTunes 11. Time to look for a 3rd party alternative.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

Since upgrading to v5, when I open firefox, it opens a pdf file as well as my home page. I cannot see any setting or fields in "options" that can be causing this - how do i stop the pdf from opening?

Why didn't you remove all three prefs.js files?
You may have left one file prefs.js that is causing the problems.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

When I initially open Firefox it opens 2 tabs. One is my home page and the other is another bookmark but I do not know why it is happening or how to stop it.

Can't open Firefox : I get a window saying another copy of firefox is open . MAC OS10.6.4 , which is not the case . MAC OS 10.

I uninstalled and reinstalled and tried to restore my old profile, but I can't open Firefox, it says another copy is already open. How do I fix that?

I followed the steps to backup my profile and saved the file on my desktop. I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it. I tried to restore my profile by copying it to the "new profile" but it didn't work, my bookmarks etc did not come back. When I looked in the new profile my old one was there as a folder so I moved it out to the Profiles section. I now had 2 profiles. I deleted the new profile using the Profile manager, thinking the old one that was left would just take over. I then tried to open Firefox but it says
Close Firefox
A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time.
Where is this other copy? How do I close it?

Did you check the File > Work Offline setting?
Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.

How can I stop firefox opening another window without my veification

An additional window is opened in the background and unless I spot it when I close the version I am using it loses all my tabs. Some I keep for information purposes and are the lost if I do not scan throught the history to find them, which takes considerable time.

If you opened Firefox in Safe Mode then closed Firefox (File > Exit), you can not use the recently used applications link/list the first time you re-start Firefox in regular mode. Instead, use your desktop icon/shortcut one time to open Firefox in regular mode, then the recently used applications link/list will be updated to open Firefox in regular mode.

Can't open Firefox or Thunderbird after Window 7 update

A Kapersky update and a Windows 7 update clashed and turned off the program. I completed a system restore to two days prior, installed the update successfully, then reinstalled all the Windows 7 updates, 13 of them. Now I can't open Firefox or Thunderbird. The Properties/settings say the the Windows XP update is incomaptible with them. I'm not running XP, so I changed the settings to read Windows 7 for both programs. Still cannot open either one.

you would plug your device into your computer and back it up so you don't loose anything on it. And then in itunes there is a button to click to restore your device. This will erase your device and reinstall ios to factory settings and then from there you can load your backup to your device. This has helped me with any problems i have had with ios7

Internet Explorer opens when I try to open Firefox. No matter where I try to open Firefox, IE opens instead. Firefox is installed on my computer.

Earlier today, I accidentally uninstalled Firefox. I reinstalled it but, when I try to open it, IE opens instead. I've tried to open it from the desktop icon, the start page icon, and from the program listed on my hard drive. All of the open IE. Help!

I have tried everything I could to fix this, but some things require actually being on Firefox, and since I cannot get on, I cannot click on the tabs to do it. I have even totally uninstalled firefox, and that has not fixed this. I still get the same message that firefox is running and I need to close it or restart (which I have also tried dozens of times). I have removed things like Java, and that has not helped either. If I cannot even get on line in firefox, how can I fix this. You can check for problems with preferences and try to rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js files and a possible user.js file to reset all prefs to the default values.
