I cannot reinstall OS X on my Macbook Pro

My little over 3 years old Macbook recently decided the harddrive was corrupted and just died on me. It would start and then on the grey loading screen would shut down. After reading a few support groups I then got into the disk utilty menu. So far in this I verified the HD which failed. I then tried to repair, which failed. I then erased the hard drive so I could reinstall OS X and start afresh. The erasing seemed to work fine.
The problem now is I go into this utilites menu, click on install OS X Mavericks, which is what was installed before. It verifies everything I log and then it starts the download and install which takes around an hour. Once it finishes however it reverts back to the utilities menu and nothing seems to have changed. The only thing which is different is now when I restart my Macbook it goes straight to the utilities menu and I do not need to hold the options button.
Really not sure what to do anymore? I feel like I may need a new harddrive? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You need to use OS X Recovery to reinstall Mavericks.
Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access the built in utilities to reinstall OS X.

Welcome to the forums.
1st off, please confirm that you are using the Install DVD 1 (not 2 or higher) and it is the DVD that came with your MBP. (Installation DVDs are model- and build-specific.)
Also, when you state "journaled option" I presume you mean Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
You can try booting from the install DVD and running Utilities menu > Disk Utility to Repair Disk (not permissions).

Hi, I just purchased a MacBook pro used, and the owner lost the original discs. He sold it to me with a formated (no OS) on the HDD, because I have upgraded my older mac with leopard I decided I would reinstall with that. The MacBook Pro is the very last model before the unibody (penryn 2.4/256mb video). Upon installation the greeting video played with no sound, and pressing the volume up key (shared with F12) did nothing, and once to the desktop, hitting that button resulted in dashboard launching (like the old style keyboards would).
Now I cannot seem to raise the volume, or use ANY of the function keys, I also cannot set the trackpad to use gestures. It would pretty much seem my MacBook Pro is missing its drivers for its internal speakers (they're not listed in the sound prefpane), trackpad, and keyboard. HELP!

Well this is mildly embarrassing but it IS valuble to others in my situation!
*OKAY SOLVED* (must be a record I posted the question a minute ago).
I forgot to mention I also couldn't adjust brightness, but after running the software update, it seems all of the proper drivers have been download and installed because I now have full proper function of the MacBook Pro. Thanks for the wasted space, but again, this could be useful for others. If this is happening to you, just run the Software Update tool (under the apple logo in the top left) and let it finish its 800mb update, all will be solved.

Either use the Apple ID you used when you originally purchased the applications or you will have to purchase them using your Apple ID. If you did not have the other Apple ID, then you have the applications illegally or they were improperly included with a computer you purchased from someone else.

I have eactly the same problem - it seems that the downloaded version on MBA is version 6.0 and on iPad is is version 2.0 -
Issue is when i tried to save the presentation on MBA Keynote 09 - Keynote crashed.

Best to install 10.9 straight up. If you still have your OS 10.9 downloaded file you can use that, or you can go to the app store and download it again. It will be in your previous purchase history. Or you could even upgrade to 10.10. If you want to start from scratch you will need to boot from USB or DVD and initialise (erase) your internal HD. To do create a bootable USB thumb drive with OS 10.9 or 10.10 follow this guide

I found the soluion after more googling here.

It is not clear if you understand what that message is indicating. It is telling you that you need to identify the older version of whatever CS5.5 upgrade you are installing to prove that you qualify for the upgrade. This could be CS5, CS4, etc.

Cannot install office 2008 on new Macbook pro.

I have just received my new macbook pro 17 inch. I"ve installed the bundled apps cd, but when I try to install Mac Office 2008, I receive the following error:
Microsoft office for Mac can't be installed on this disk. newer-version-installed message.
I'm running Snow leopard 10.6.4 and have only installed firefox and AIM besides the software that came with the mac.
I've searched the Mac and cannot find any reference to Microsoft or office 2008. I've also gone through the "Remove office 2008 manually" from the Microsoft website and again have not found any files or folders they referred to.
Does anyone know what else I can do to solve this issue?

However, running Remove Office might do the trick.
I mentioned it anyway because I've seen posts in the past here where the same thing happened. The OP had manually deleted everything they could find, but still couldn't install without either running the Remove Office tool, or going the Draconian route and formatting the drive, reinstalling everything from scratch.
I think that happens if you've opened any Office trial app. It must put a hidden file on the drive somewhere that tracks your 30 day usage from there. If it does exist, then using the Remove Office tool is the only way to get it off the hard drive so you can install the full version.
