iCloud demands that my Apple ID be an email address. Fine. I have one.
iCloud sends me to my Apple user page to change my ID into an email address. Fine.
I change my ID to my email address. BORK!
Apple freaks out and will not accept the new ID because "that email address is already in use."
Of course it it, by me!
I now stand in the center of an idiotic Catch-22.
And, no, I'm not going to use a different email address.

Apple recommends you change your Apple ID to your current, working email address. This will not create another Apple ID, it will only change it to your working email address. See Changing the name you use for your Apple ID if you'd like more information.
Note: @mac.com and @me.com Apple IDs can not be renamed. If you no longer use the .mac or .me email address be sure to add your valid email address as an additional email address.

You can't delete an Apple ID or an iCloud account. Just stop using it and create a new one. If you want to make your ID the same as your new @icloud.com address please see this post:

Otherwise create an ID at http://appleid.apple.com using a non-Apple email address and then use the ID to create a new iCloud account. I would personally recommend the second option: if you take the first you must make sure to add a non-Apple contact address because otherwise if there is a problem (such as forgetting your password) Apple can only contact you at an address you can't access.
Note that you can't transfer iTunes Store purchases from one account to another. Also depending on your requirements you may only need to create an 'email alias' which is an additional address (not account) - please see

I had to updated my apple ID to an email address ( as required) when I updated my OS on my Mac. All my apps were purchased with the previous ID so now I cannot seem to updated them as my previous ID does not exist. What do I do?

Great question. When you update your Apple ID to a new primary email address, you'll want to update the login information across all of your devices. You simply want to sign out of Settings > iTunes & App Store, and back in with the new email address:

(do the same for all services, including iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud, etc across all devices)
After doing so, you'll be able to update applications with your new email address. If you are prompted for the old Apple ID, simple enter your current password.
Please note that this only works for accounts where the email address was updated, not for entirely new accounts.

Your music will only be where you put it. It does not magically appear in other places. Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some coutries:

I don't use my @mac account and am not receiving any notifications. How can I change my primary email address back to an address I actually check?

Found a solution...
• Go to your country's Apple Store website http://store.apple.com/
• Click on the Account button in the top-right corner
• Under Account Settings, click on Change your default shipping or billing info
• Sign in with your usual Apple ID and password
• The email address listed under Payment Information is the key
• Click on Edit next to Payment Information and change that email address to your preferred address

though I have to say I think it's more sensible if the ID is another address, both for security reasons (so people don't know what the login is) and as a contact address from Apple if the account were to stop working and they needed to contact you. So personally I would to to System Preferences, enter the GMail address which is an ID, and then choose a nerw @icloud.com address.
If she has her own iCloud account she will need either her own computer or her own user account on your Mac to be able to make use of it. You should note that under Apple's terms of use Apple IDs are only available to children of 13 and over.
As to purchasing apps, this is nothing to do with iCloud: it's iTunes, and the login can be different. So you can all sign into the same iTunes account but have different iCloud accounts. Or she can have her own iTunes account if she is of suitable age (credit card needed for purchasing apps).
If you have other children you should be aware that any one Mac or device can create only three iCloud accounts - this is tied to the serial number, not the user account, and once reached cannot be bypassed. You can of course sign into an iCloud account created on another device.

You have to go to Settings>Store and log out of one account and log into the other account. If you have updates available for apps that were purchased from more than one account, you have to update the apps individually until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.

You can create an alias @icloud.com email address within your current account that will receive email in your current iCloud inbox (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mm6b1a490a). (@me.com addresses are no longer available as new addresses.) Just be aware that you cannot use an alias address later to create a new iCloud account or move it to a different account.
Also, even if you created a new iCloud account with a new ID, your existing purchases would not be lost. They are permanently tied to the original ID you used to purchase them. You can also continue to use the existing ID for the iTunes store; it does not need to be the same as the ID you use for iCloud.

You can't change the iCloud ID, you can add email aliases if you choose (up to 3) they will be in the format [email protected]

If your Apple ID is a Apple address - @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com, then it cannot be changed. If it's a non-Apple address then you should be able to change it at http://appleid.apple.com.
If you are an iCloud user then you must turn off 'Find My 'iPhone/iPad/Mac/ on any devices is it enable on, before changing the ID. You will then need to sign out on each device and back in with the new ID.

Thanks for the flag J.K. - they contaced me and solved my problem. On this account (which I created just to ask this question), I log in with my email rather than my user name (mtalldud). On the account that I was having trouble with, they told me to use my user ID instead of my email to log in and it worked. This is a bit confusing and seems a bit inconsistent but at least I don't need this temporary account any more to get into this community and find answers!

This post was about having updated the primary email address on an iTunes account via a computer - if you do that you might need to log out of the account on an iPad by tapping on the id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then log back in with the updated version of the account for that email address change to be recognised on your iPad. If you don't log out and back in then an iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch) might continue to show the old version of the iTunes account id.
