I cannot save the Firefox icon in Applications: I get a message "The item "Firefox.app" can't be replaced because it's invisible."

I downloaded the update to my desktop and can open it, but I cannot move the icon to Applications. Each time I do, I get the error message: The item “Firefox.app” can’t be replaced because it’s invisible.
It's currently saved in Documents. The icon remains on the Dock.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • The item "(name of the song)" can't be replaced because it's invisible!!??!

I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue.
I've been backing up my song purchases to the time capsule but for some reason on half of my songs i get an error that says "*The item (name of the song) can't be replaced because its invisible*"
never had this problem before until now... not sure how to fix it. i can play my songs no problem but when i try to copy a song to the time capsule i get that error message. HELP!

The issue has nothing to do with your original files (I'm pretty sure) so the profession of being able to play the song in iTunes has nothing to do with it. The file that's "invisible" is not the original, but the copy that's already in the destination folder. OS X has LOTS of invisible files all over the place. Why didn't you know that before? They're invisible! Usually these are files the system needs for proper operation, but the user doesn't need to mess with (according to Apple!).
Now, how did your destination folder wind up with an invisible file by the same name as the song file you're trying to copy? I don't know, but what it looks like to me is that standard opperating procedure for the OS is to begin its copying process by first creating an invisible file in the destination folder with the proper title, then begin actually copying data. For some reason that Apple needs to fix, sometimes when the OS goes to start actually copying data, it sees the invisible file it just created and says "Oops! there's already a file there by this title! I can't put another one there!" Normally, it would ask you, the user, if you wanted to replace the existing file, but the file is invisible and therefore cannot be replaced, so it just tells you that.
    What to do?
I LOVE the widget available here: http://web.me.com/hansen.m/Site/Widgets.html One trip to the dashboard, click on "Show", and viola! you can see that pesky invisible file in your destination folder. Now you can delete it. Sometimes this works and a second attempt to copy the file works. More often I find that I have to copy to a different folder on the destination disk. After that I can move it to the preferred folder (copying from the local hard disk to some other location - I run into this when copying to my idisk - seems to be part of the problem.)
In case that was about as clear as a toad's complexion, let me illustrate. I move files for sharing to my idisk every week. I click on a song and drag from iTunes, where I've already placed my recording, to a Finder window where idisk/Music/ReChording is already open, wait for the green circle with the white plus sign, and drop it. I get the message about not being able to replace. I access my dashboard and click "Show". Then I delete the now visible (grayed, but visible) offending file from my idisk. Then I click (in the Finder) on the idisk/Music folder, making it the destination. Then click on iTunes and drag the song to the idisk/Music folder. It copies. When it's done, I drag the file from idisk/Music to idisk/Music/ReChording. This copy has never given me a problem, and is nearly instantaneous, since no data needs to be copied.
Download that widget. It's a lot less painful than other workarounds. But Apple needs to fix this.
    I hope that helps.

  • HT1386 Sync iTunes problem: When I connect the iPhone to our iMac using a USB cord the phone chimes convulsively, the battery icon flashes, and I get a message in iTunes saying "iTunes could not connect to this phone.  This device is no longer connected."

It is an iPhone 4s.  It used to be set to sync wirelessy but that became annoying and I reset the phone so I could just sync it with the cord.  Apparently that was a bad idea.

    Hello robh53,
The following article provides some useful troubleshooting steps that can help get your iPhone to cooperate with iTunes.

  • My Mac is 15 months old and all of a sudden it has started resetting the time and date then I get a message saying not all apps will work because of the pre Jan date any help as to why ? Causing problems with wireless router.

My Mac book pro is 15 months old and now suddenly it has started resetting the date and time, causing problems with applications and my wireless access. Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how to fix it?

Seems the time isn't being saved to your computer correctly, it may be a corrupt file that isn't saving the time anymore.
    You can move the
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
file out of your Users/Library/Preferences folder to the desktop and reboot.
then go to your System Preferences > Date and Time and set a time server close to your location (or in your time zone)
(trash the file on the desktop if no ill issues occur later on)
or you can follow/bookmark these support docs to reset your PRAM and SMC (and for future reference)

I don't remember exactly where OS X is keeping it time settings now, but I think one of those choices should help resolve your issue and won't hurt anything giving them a shot. Perhaps someone else could refresh my memory.

  • Attempting to transfer music files directly from iTunes to backup drive and get the the item can't be replaced because it's invisible. Its amazing how when something works flawlessly, Apple has to screw it up.  Never saw this until the new iTunes.

Hate it! Anywaze, suggestions welcome that can permanently remedy the issue without having to go through file by file, song by song to make copies, renaming, resetting, etc.  Thanks so much.

Are you dragging the entire iTunes folder across in Finder (which is easiest)?

You can try to repair the permissions for the Firefox application files and folders.
    You can also do this:
    * Download a new copy of the Firefox program: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re)install.
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded.

  • I cannot override my previous version of Firefox with v4.0. When I try to drag it into applications, I get a message that there is a newer version already there (not true).

I have been following the download instructions. But I never get a prompt to place the file into the Applications folder. So I open the file, drag it to Applications, and get a message that I already have a newer file in Applications. However, this is not true. When I drag the file to the Firefox icon, I am told that can't be done because Firefox is already open.
I have done several other updates, never had this problem before. I have a MacBook.

Beginning with Firefox 4, Macs must have an Intel x86 processor; your system is a PPC Mac.

The good news is that Firefox 3.6.24 still supports the PPC Mac architecture. The bad news is that support for the Firefox 3.6.x series is likely to end in the first quarter of 2012.

  • "Firefox" is an application which was downloaded from the Internet - Open?

Everytime I go to open up programs (for example, firefox) I get a dialog box like this:
“Firefox” is an application which was downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?
Underneath it says "AppFresh downloaded this file on May 3, 2009". These programs are installed via an administrator, but I don't want to have to click yes every time on my standard account. What can I do?

    Peter:
I don't want to have to click yes every time on my standard account.
As noted in earlier posts, you should get that message the first time you launch firefox or any other downloaded application. If you get the message each time, for some reason the computer thinks it is the first time you are launching the application. Are you sure that the application is installed in the application folder? Or are you launching from the .dmg each time? If you are,
double click on the .dmg file.
When it opens drag the icon to the Applications folder and it will be permanently installed. You will need to authenticate to install, but you should not have to authenticate each time you launch the application.
Drag any icon that you have in the Dock to the Desktop
    Then launch the application.
If you want to keep it on the dock click and hold on the icon
Select Keep in Dock in the pop-up menu.

  • How do I always show a Firefox icon when dragging a URL shortcut to the desktop?

    Win 7 Pro 64
When dragging a URL shortcut to the desktop, I sometimes get the websites favicon regardless if the site has a favicon or not.
How do I always show a Firefox icon when dragging a URL shortcut to the desktop?
    Thank you

LIke many others, I had the same problem with v.26. I had a whole slew of URL shortcuts that the icons went to blank white squares. Here is what I did to fix: First I put them all in a folder to make sure there weren't any left on the desktop.
Next, I opened that folder, went to the first shortcut and double clicked it to open the web page. When it opened, I used the mouse to drag the URL onto the desktop creating a new shortcut. Again the white square icon resulted.
So I right clicked the shortcut, clicked on "Properties" and under the "Web Document" tab, clicked "Change Icon". A new pop-up window opens that attempts to find a new icon in the windows shell files.
I instead clicked "Browse" and inserted the directory path to the Firefox program file:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
SIX icons were shown, the top left being the familiar white square with the Firefox logo, which I selected, then clicked my way back out on the "OK" buttons.
NOW, I opened each URL link in the folder, and once opened in a new browser window, dragged the URL's to the desktop and NOW Firefox assigned each one the new correct icon automatically. Once done with all the shortcuts, I deleted the old ones from the folder and the folder itself. End of problem. Now when I save new shortcuts by dragging URL's to the desktop it saves them correctly.

  • Changing firefox icon in Applications Internet?

Hi, I know I know, Gran Paradiso is the same, but I removed "Grand Paradiso" and used the AUR and yaourt to install firefox, the official one.  So, I can make a launcher on the desktop and its the Official Firefox icon, but if I make one in the System > Admin > Main Menu, it will still show up in Applications > Internet as the Icon for Gran Paraiso, that blue orb.  Why is it that creating a launcher on the desktop uses the firefox icon and Internet > Firefox is still the blue orb.  I did try and drag the desktop icon the the Main Menu editor as well.
Help to change the Applications > Internet > Firefox icon???
    THANKS!

hi there, found a bit of info for you from here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome_Menu_tweaking
    pacman -S alacarte
that will install menu editor if you havent got it yet. then what i do from there to change the icon is open Alacarte by right clicking Applications, select Edit Menus.... find Firefox that i want to change.... right-click it, select Properties... change Name to Firefox or whatever you want, click the icon on left side to change to what you want (this will all be done on the Properties window). anyways i hope this helps you out. good luck
edit: maybe you could also try a new icon theme out from gnomelook.org if you havent already.

What version of iTunes are you using? An .itl file is something that Windows uses, or very old versions of iTunes on Mac. The library file on Macs is now .xml and has been since late iTunes 4.
Is iTunes running ok without any problems after you OK that message? If it is, then you may be able to ignore it if you can't account for why you're getting it. But make sure you take backups in case something happens in the future.
