I cannot send e-mail and receive only a few of the incoming e-mails.

I'm using a pop server. Worked fine until yesterday. Had a G drive installed on Sunday to back-up all my files. Don't know if it effected the e-mail.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Please summarize how you are performing the backup, and whether any software came with the G-Drive for doing this? It there is such software, does it analyze files for changes, and only add the changes to the backup, or does it replace in a wholesale fashion?
Have you checked the Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information/Outgoing server settings to see if the name of the selected SMTP is correct?

I recently set up Apple Mail, and even though I like the program a lot - I prefer to use Gmail to read and manage my emails. However, Mail is built in to many other Leopard applications, so I would prefer to use it with those (for sending purposes), such as in Preview. Therefore, I would like to know how to do the following:
- Make it not alter anything in my Gmail inbox
- Make it receive only a few of the most recent emails - or none
Would I have to use it through POP or IMAP for these things?

if you set up as pop, then you can choose the option to download from the day you created the account forward, thereby limiting the amount of emails that will be downloaded to mail. you would first have to enable pop in gmail>settings. with pop if you make a change in mail, in say your inbox, then that change will not be reflected in gmail on the web.
if you set up as imap, then what you see in gmail will be the same as what you see in mail as far as your emaisl/mailboxes... and chnages you make on one will be shown on the other.

What’s your Outlook account? Exchange account or some other Internet email accounts?
This issue is usually happened when the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector account is syncing changes to a folder and cannot find the folder in the Outlook client. Please try the following KB to check it:

Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on each device and make sure only the phone number for that device is checked.

Even if you find a way to send the request for a read confirmation with the email, you are dependent on the recipient's mail system and/or mail reading software to notice it and comply with it. After upgrading to Lion, I went to open Mail and received the message that it needed to upgrade my Mail database - this may take a few minutes. The bar shows it is about 1/5 along and has been there for over 10 hours. Help!

If I understand you correctly, you want to limit to limit your use of the Messages application to non-iCloud sources such as text messaging through your phone carrier, is that right?
You can turn off the use of iMessages in Settings > Messages > iMessage. See this help article -

Good to know that, but what can I do to get the mail and contacts downloaded from Icloud onto my Iphone? I am told that the password needs to be reset and I have erased and reset it 3x's already? Should I Restore All Settings or Restore Network Settings or will that result in a situation where I have to have it re-unlocked again? GRACIAS!

Check Settings>Messages>MMS Messaging and make sure it's set to on. Contact Redpocket and make sure your account is provisioned correctly. However, if Redpocket is not a supported carrier, it is possible that not all functions of the iPhone will work or work as expected.

I've never had a problem with multiple email addresses. My ISP's email account has multiple accounts and the same SMTP server, no problem.
I can't speak for GMail as I only have one, and that is my spam email account, so I don't really care what it sends.

Gmail is a very bizarre email server. It was designed to be web-based, but due to demand, they made it pseudo-compatible with POP and IMAP.
If you move email out of the Inbox, Mail will reply using the "default" email account, not necessarily the one that was originally associated with the message. Being that Gmail doesn't really have mailboxes or folders, but has tags it calls "Labels," it may have something to do with that issue.
