I cannot simply open/preview attachments, they always download

When clicking on a phrase of "clickable text" that links to a down-loadable document, I never see the URL of the document, and I would like to. I have been told that I should be able to see the URL if I preview/open the document instead of downloading it. However, I seem to have Firefox set up so that automatically downloads all documents and does not give me the option to merely open/preview them without downloading. Can I change this configuration, and if so, how?

Try upgrading to the most recent version of Firefox.
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

So you don't receive any popup window asking you to save or view the document? The download just begins all by itself.
NOTE: Even if you select to only view the document, since Firefox has no built in Word viewer, you'll end up downloading it anyway. The only difference is that it will be downloaded into the temporary memory of your computer.

Merely clicking the Preview icon in the Dock doesn't cause it to open anything, unless you had one or more windows open the last time it quit.
If you're sure you've installed the latest version of Flash, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test.
1. If you're getting a "blocked plug-in" error, triple-click the line below to select it:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder should open. If there is more than one item in the folder with the words "Flash Player" (not "flashplayer") in the name, open the respective Info windows, check the version numbers, and delete all except the latest. You may be prompted for your login password. If you get the same error after doing that, re-download and reinstall Flash. Download it from this page:
Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player
Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.
2. If you get a "missing plug-in" error, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked Enable plug-ins.
3. Select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them.
4. In the Safari preference window, select
Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
Close the window. Then select
 ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.

• Cannot read opened email attachments

i'm able to download attachments that are attached to my emails on cox.net, which is my email provider, (i connect to the internet through safari) but when i try to open them, they are a mish-mash of letters and symbols, and are undecipherable. i got my macbook in december, and i have not been able to read one email attachment of any sort from anyone, and i can't find an option list or anything like that to allow me to choose how to open the downloads, so i'm not sure what to do. actually, it's not just attachments connected to emails, come to think of it, it's downloads from other sites too. can someone who is a lot more computer savvy then me, please help!? thanks.

I'll assume you're not an experienced user.
Files are made to be opened with specific kinds of applications. You can see the app associated with each file by highlighting the file, hitting command + I and looking down about 2/3 of the way.
Another thing to try is to highlight the file and then hit the space bar. If the file is a normal file of most kinds, then QuickLook should pop it open in a window.
To get more information, you need to say what kinds of files you're talking about. One simple issue may be that you are trying to look at .wmv files. These are windows media and will play on a mac through at least three different ways - but you have to do something:
1. download vlc player from videolan.org. The best media player around and it's free.
2. Install Perian. Search for it and read what it does.
3. The Microsoft blessed way is to install flip4mac. Search for it. The player is free.

• I cannot simply open Word documents. I am forced to save them in order to view them.

In firefox, IE, and chrome, I try to open Word documents and am forced to save them in order to view them. I do not get the box that asks whether I want to save or open (and yes, I have the option to always ask checked in my settings). When I find the document in my folders, it tells me I'm in protected view when viewing my documents. This has only started recently. The only thing new I've done to the computer recently is update firefox. However, this problem is occurring in all my browsers.
(I do not have this problem opening other files, like PDF. I still get the option to open or save with files other than Word documents.)
I have run my Sophos antivirus and have found nothing. I have suspected rookit, but hope it is less serious.
I also do not wish to download any new programs in order to fix this problem.
Thank you!

• 'App' is damaged and cannot be opened. Delete 'app' and download it again from the App Store

I was trying to download some apps on my MBP. I tried downloading three different apps . All of them completed downloading successfully but when I tried to open them they failed and I recieved a popup saying that ' The '**** app ' is damaged and can't be opened. Delete the '**** app' and try downloading again from the Mac App store.' . I believe this has nothing to do with gatekeeper ( I've set it to 'anywhere' anyway).

Install the v10.8.3 combo > OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 (Combo)
Then restart your Mac and try opening the apps.

• HT1926 why is it that when I try to open my itunes it tells me that there has been an error. It says that it cannot be opened that it was not downloaded correctly, error MSVCR80.dll.

Will I lose all my music and downloads if I have to reinstall the app? I have a lot of money invested in this and don't want to lose what I have.

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

• I've just installed mountain lion on my macbook pro. I cannot open preview and it is also stalling the log out sequence? How can I solve this

I've just installed Mountain Lion on my Macbook pro and cannot now open Preview. I've partly solved the reading of PDF documents by installing Adobe Reader, but Preview is also stalling the log out process. Any suggestions how I might solve this annoying trait would be most appreciated. Many thanks.

Just an FYI, normally you give the 'solved' award to the person who gave you the answer, not to yourself.

• App is Damaged and Cannot be Opened

I just downloaded an app and when I tried opening it, a pop-up came up and said that the app was "damaged and cannot be opened". I did try downloading it again and ended up with the same result. How do i fix this problem?

That means you have a case-sensitive startup volume.
You should be able to use either "Carbon Copy Cloner" or "SuperDuper" (free for this purpose) to copy your case-sensitive volume to an empty case-insensitive one. Make at least two such copies on different drives. One is not enough to be safe.
Note: If there are any name conflicts — that is, files in the same folder with names that differ only in case, such as "File" and "file" — then you will either get an error or one of the files won't be copied. You must ensure either that no such conflicts exist, or that the consequences are not important. How you do that is up to you. Unless you went out of your way to create such conflicts, they probably don't exist.
Then erase the source volume in Disk Utility as case-insensitive. This action will wipe all data from the volume.
Restore from one of your backups using the same application you used to create it, or use the "Restore" feature of Disk Utility, which will be faster. Search its built-in help for the term "duplicate" if you need instructions.

Then most likely it is not caused by Adobe Reader.

• Cannot open CS6 Bridge. Always the same ERROR: Bridge has a problem and cannot read the cache

Cannot open CS6 Bridge. Always the same ERROR: Bridge has a problem and cannot read the cache

Try this. This is for CS6 but substitue CC and Bridge 6.
~library/caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6 and inhere should be 2 files:
Adobe Bridge Plug-in Cache
and the folder called Cache. Inhere should be 4 folders called '254', '1024', 'data' and 'full'
All those folders carry the content of the respective quality of the thumbs and preview as well as 100 % cache and Bridge database.
Any way, Since you have not used Bridge you have no relevant amount of cache and I would suggest you quit both PS and Bridge and manual delete both the items (plug in and folder called cache at the end of the Bridge CS6 path mentioned above.
(both files will refresh itself after a restart of Bridge).
To be on the save side also visit in same user library the folder Preferences and look for the file called "com.adobe.bridge5.plist" (yes it is Bridge 5 that comes with CS6, all Adobe apps have their own version number and they are presented in the same Suite version. CS6 has PS version 13 and Bridge version 5 )
also drag this file to the trash.
Then hold down option key (alt) while starting Bridge and this should give you the option to reset the preferences as mentioned earlier in this thread.
Choose reset prefs and try again.

• Recipients cannot open my attachments. What to do?

I'm sure this has been posted many times before, but I wasn't able to find anything pertaining to my situation after 10 minutes of browsing, so I'm just posting it again.
Attachments I send out with the mac mail account (word, excel, pdf, jpf saved for web) cannot be opened by many recipients, PC users, I'm assuming.
Are there any tweaks I can do in my settings to minimize this?
Or should I be saving the files differently?
(already set to "send Windows friendly...")
I think they are getting them as mime attachments and cannot open those.
Thanks so much for any help here!

• Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many (not all) documents that cannot be opened in either Pages '09 or Pages 5. They show on my doc lists, but are greyed out so I can't try to change extensions or anything else. Some are PDFs.

Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many documents, but not all, that cannot be opened in either Pages 5 or in Pages '09. The names show in my document lists, but are greyed out. They do not show any extensions, but I'm sure at seast some of them are PDFs. As I cannot open them, I am unable to try to experiment with any solutions - I am not tech savvy, but can sometimes fix things by trial and error. I have no issues with sharing documents as I have no other devices. I just want to be able to open my saved documents! Also, the documents I can open have to be persistently coaxed to open to a point that it is extremely aggravating. I am not so happy with this recent "upgrade." Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You use Finder to find stuff. It is what you use to look at where your files are kept and to rename, move or trash them. If you double click on a file in Finder it finds the right software to open it for you.
To open particular files you use the right software for each type. Usually, but not always, the software that made the file.
Pages opens files ending in .pages. Also .txt, .rtf, and doc.
Pages 5 is the latest (but certainly not the greatest) version of Pages. It has trouble opening all sorts of files including the older Pages '09 files but it will still do it.
Unfortunately Apple has chosen for Pages 5 to also save its files as exactly the same file extension .pages despite it being a different format that can not be opened by the older Pages '09.
As we all know Apple is wise and great beyond belief and would not do something that on the face of it looks extraordinarily stupid and shortsighted. Therefore we know that it must be our fault and we are not holding the software right. Because we are bad users, we must be punished, by either having to use Pages 5 or jump through hoops to avoid using Pages 5.
If you have installed Pages 5 any .pages file (old or new) will be opened by Pages 5. If you then save the file, Pages 5 will change the file format. So don't open your files with Pages 5 and don't save them if you do.
To stop Pages 5 opening and resaving your old files, you need to drag it to the trash and empty it.
When it is no longer around to annoy you, you can go back to using Pages 09.

Cannot open PDF attachments in email, get administrator logon using Acrobat X?

I have no problem opening PDF attachments that arrive in my Outlook 2003 Inbox; they open fine with Adobe Reader 9. It may be an issue with your email client.
But if you think that Adobe Reader 8 will fix it, you can download it from http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.1.3/enu/AdbeRdr813_en_US.exe - make sure that you uninstall Reader 9 first (and Acrobat.com & Adobe AIR).
