I cannot sync apps on iPhone 4s

The screen for syncing Apps on my iPhone 4s is gray.  I cannot sync new apps or change the icons on the windows (right side of sync window). I am able to sync movies, music, photos.

There are applications which have been developed to work only with iPad; some with iPhone; some to work on both. Have you checked that the iPad applications you are trying to sync are compatible with iPhone?

    Connect & select iPhone in iTunes Sudebar (iTunes > View > Show Sidebar), in Music tap (right pane top), select Sync Music and the music you want on iPhone then click Apply button (bottom right).

    On you iPhone, force close all the Apps in the multitask window.
    Follow these steps to force an app to close:
    From the Home screen, click the Home button twice. 
    Tap and hold on the app. 
    When it starts to jiggle, tap the to close it one by one until all cleared
    Now do a Soft reset of your iPhone:
    Hold both Home and Sleep button for around 10secs until you see the Apple logo then release. After it returns to Home screen, connect to sync and see if this resolves the issue.

    1) The files are in the iTunes folder. The iTunes folder is in your Music folder which is in your home folder (user).
    So go to <user home>/Music/iTunes.
    2) Any files that end with .xml, .itl, or itdb. Please note that I had upgraded iTunes many times over the years and had several obsolete versions of those files in my iTunes folder. By moving them out and forcing iTunes to create new ones (see steps 3 & 4 above), I was able to determine which ones iTunes actually needed. Those were the files that I copied back into the iTunes folder, overlaying the new empty files.
    3) Always make backups before you try tricks like this. I would recommend backing up your entire iTunes folder. I did not experience any data loss. Those files seem to contain your iTunes library information but not the actual music, movies, etc. When I started iTunes in step 3 (see above), iTunes showed an empty library. After performing step 4 (see above), I started iTunes again and it showed all my music, movies, etc. So I assume that the actual media files are stored elsewhere. Again, always make backups before trying something like this. I use Time Machine.

    I have tried syncing my apps many times already and this first time Itunes says that apps cannot be determined. Has anybody else gotten this error messege on Itunes? If so how did you solve the problem withouth having to restore the iphone to factory setting?

    Hi everyone!
    I bought a new laptop lately, and I wanted to sync all the applications on the iphone with itunes, but it keeps saying, "please authorize your computer" - which I already did. Then all my apps disappeared from the phone, so I downloaded everything to iTunes again, and tried to sync, but it seems that the apps cannot be synced with the phone. I tried to download every program to the phone again, and then sync it again, but it still won't work. I reinstalled iTunes and visited the support page and tried everything regarding the authorization and deauthorization articles there (administration account, deleticn SC folder from program data etc), and it still does not work. I can see all the apps on the computer, but when I want to sync, it simply won't copy anything to the phone. So I have to download every program from app. store via my phone, and it works perfectly, until I connect the phone with the computer. I searched for an apple email address, but I cannot find anything (I live in Hungary, Europe, and I just realized that the apple support is really poor here).
    Can somebody please help or just give me an official apple email address to write my problem to them as well?

    I bought several apps, like 6 or 7, and the sync would error out, but the backups would be okay.
    I guess I was trying to sync too many new applications at once. I ended up having to download my purchases via iTunes on my computer, then go to Apps on my iPhone in iTunes, and check one at a time, syncing after each, until all apps were installed.
    If I tried to do anymore than one at a time, I would get iPhone not connected or trouble reading disk errors while syncing.

Now I try iCloud backup for my new iPhone 4S 64GB Black unit but the iCloud backup is workless because it's says no backup available and ask me to use it as a new iPhone. Then I try iTunes Backup. It backup every single photo, apps, and device settings. But it doesn't sync my infinity blade 2 app. I try app sync up to ten times but the results are same and that is infinity blade 2 app failed to install. Now I'm so worried and sad because I scare I will loss all infinity blade 2 data and my in app purchase up to USD 38.73 it's a huge waste. PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    It will download infinity blade 2 app to my new iPhone 4S at no charge but will it also restore the data on old iPhone 4 to this new iPhone 4S. I mean I can take back from where I left or I have to start from zero. Plus I ask Mac City, the authorised reseller of apple consumer products and they say iPhone 4 powered by apple A4 chip and iPhone 4S powered dual core A5 chip, so the data not compitable from A4 to A5. Is that truth? If it is what about my in app purchase?

Items prior to apps synced (calendar/contacts).  I restarted both my iphone (currently on ios 4.2.8) and my computer, itunes was on 10.6.1, same problem.  I installed itunes 10.6.3, same problem.  I had been waiting to update ios to 5.1.1 and would like to do that now, but wanted to sync first.  Anyone have any ideas?  I am stumped!  Thank you.

    First message I get when I connect the iphone is
    "The software on iphone has expired and must be updated to a newer version"
    Then it tries to backup but I get

    When I click check for updates it says I have the latest version (5.0)
    When I try to restore I always get "iTunes could not backup the iphone because a session could not be started with the iphone. Please disconnect and reconnect the iphone, then try again"
    Tried that MANY times but no luck.
    This iphone was on a developper account but it is not anymore (removed from developper account).
    I'm the administrator on my PC. When I'm on the summary of my iphone it shows N/A as my phone number.
    Back up to icloud doesn't work because I didn't set it up before it stopped working
    When I try to activate it directly from the iphone I always get "Could not activate iphone. Your iphone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarely unavailable..." (for the past 3 weeks :s)
    I can access my music and everything from itunes.
    I even tried to restore it from the ispw file (using shift + restore) but I got an error message (sorry I don't remember which one) but it didn't work.
    I also tried device manager, select PC, scan hardware for changes (read it worked for some) but not for me after that I don't get the

    I received the same error message after I had recently updated iTunes to 10.5.1 and I had wirelessly updated 13 apps.  I had to go into iTunes and select Apps, on the bottom right it said I needed to update 13 apps.  I updated the apps via iTunes and then synced again without an issue.

    I also got this message when trying to sync my 3G iPhone. I followed several suggestions found here: tried restarting everything, then changing automatic updates in iTunes. I  also tried the "scan for hardware changes" suggestion, but nothing worked.  Then as per the above posters, I also went into iTunes, selected Apps, and went to the bottom right to get App updates. A list of needed updates appeared with the icons, and as they updated, the icon would disppear, until I was left with   "SoundCloud".  It appeared to update fine, but the icon remained. I clicked "get update" a couple of times on the icon....it would update but the icon stayed on the list.   I tried to sync after this and still got the error. . Then I then deleted SoundCloud from the phone, and the sync worked fine.  SoundCloud was reinstalled on my phone during Step 4 of the sync. Hope this helps!!

    As another post suggested, I restarted both the iPhone and the computer, and that fixed the problem.

    1. If I select Russian(my native language) as the system language, the Apps section/tab does not appear fully when I click on it. The Apps tab is selected, but it shows the contents of the Summary tab. I cannot sync apps with my iPhone.
    2. The icons of the apps appear black and distorted.

    If I select English in the System Settings, the Apps tab appears fully and the apps icons are displayed properly, so I can sync apps.
    I reinstalled iTunes exactly as described at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224 but this does not help.
