I cannot type anywhere in Firefox

This has happened twice, and both times I could not pinpoint a cause.
Currently, I cannot type in any field of Firefox (address bar, google bar, websites, nothing). I am running 17.0.1, and have no add-ons. I have tried restarting the computer, re-installing firefox, virus scans, security updates, and everything else. Nothing seems to work. This is frustrating enough that I no longer want to use Firefox, even after so many faithful years.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
*https://hacks.mozilla.org/2010/09/hardware-acceleration/
Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.
*C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
*Firefox 17.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

Please help! I updated safari and yes it is an older desktop, but now all of the sudden tabs I have open will freeze on me. I can see what is going on, but am unable to type anywhere on the page! I have to shut down safari and then open up a whole new window to even attempt to get it to stop! It is driving me insane not to mention I need my desktop to work properly. I beg for someone to help me with this.

  • Firefox says that it imported bookmarks, et.al. from IE8, but I cannot find anywhere in firefox

I did a new install, I transferred bookmarks, cookies, et.al from MSIE8 as I was asked to do, but my bookmarks are not in the 'Bookmark' drop-down menu, nor are they anywhere else. I cannot find them anywhere.

You can usually find the imported IE Favorites in a folder ("From Internet Explorer") at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu folder (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks).
If you can't find them in the "From Internet Explorer" folder then try this:
    * Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html): File > Import and Export
    * Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File

  • Firefox resizes to full screen when I type anywhere in Firefox

I launch Firefox and start typing a URL or search string and the Firefox window instantly resizes to full screen. This happens only once after launching Firefox. I can 'restore down' and continue without the problem occurring again, unless I close Firefox and relaunch, and then window will resize to full screen when I start typing. Problem started about one month ago. Win 7 16-bit, FF 3.6.8. Thanks in advance!

  • I'm using Firefox 5.0 and I cannot type a value into a drop down menu.

There is a webpage with a drop down menu box.
When I open the page with IE, I can choose from the listed values OR type my own value,
When I open the page with Firefox, I can only choose from the listed values BUT CANNOT type my own value.
The page is on my company and so I am sorry that I cannot show it to you guys at the moment.
Is there anything I can try modifying so that I can make the box typable?

Go to Options > Advanced > General and uncheck the "Use hardware acceleration when available"
Hope this will solve your problem :)

  • I cannot type into Firefox.

I cannot type into Firefox. It worked fine yesterday. I noticed that it upgraded to 23.0 earlier and then 25.0 later in the day. I run it once a day for a particular website. Curiously, I can cut and paste, so I typed this in another application and then pasted it into this box. It is rather annoying that I couldn't use a different browser to report the problem.
Other applications and web browsers work just fine.
Control-V does not work. I need to use the right click menu to do the copy and paste in Firefox.
I tried running in Firefox Safe Mode and tried re-installing Firefox.

'''Follow up. ''' Very strange. I saw the Help/Keyboard Shortcuts menu and went to that page. I started trying some of them with no effect, until I accidentally pressed the "fn" key on my laptop keyboard. Suddenly, I could type again. This seems very odd, in that nothing else seemed to be affected. Still, it is good to have Firefox back.

  • I cannot type in any of the firefox windows. How do I fix?

I cannot type in any of the fields when I open the firefox browser.
It's not my keyboard (as you can see - I am sending this from internet explorer). I have reset, uninstalled, and reinstalled but it is still not working.
    How do I resolve?

Some have reported that pressing F9 and the Windows key simultaneously one or more times has worked to fix issues with the keyboard not working.

  • Since I updated firefox yesterday, I cannot go anywhere on the internet. I had to start using explorer. Can this be resolved?

I can't get on any webpages, it stalls and goes nowhere.

hello, this sounds a bit as if the ctrl-key on your keyboard is constantly pressed - maybe it's a hardware issue, can you try with a different keyboard?

  • Cannot view pdfs in Firefox. - Browser doesn't recognize them as pdfs

I cannot view pdfs in Firefox. I checked the Applications section of FIrefox preferences and instead of saying "Adobe Acrobat PDF document"- it says "Adobe Acrobat FDF document. I am guessing that the browser does not recognize pdfs because the content type is incorrect.
I am using a Mac running OSX 10.8.2 and Firefox 17.0, however I have had this problem for several months and several earlier versions of Firefox as well. Please fix this issue. According to the help center forums, I am not alone with this issue.

Thank you for your help. What I ended up having to do was to change the Action next to Adobe Acrobat FDF document to "Use Preview". Then again under the Preview.app Document under Content Type, I had to change that to Use Preview as well. It is now working. However, Firefox (Mozilla) needs to change the word FDF to PDF in their preferences file.

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database.

  • Cannot type Traditional Chinese

I am using the newest version of Firefox for android. I cannot type the Traditional Chinese correctly in any banks in the browser. it is quite inconvenient when using the Google search engine for searching Chinese keywords.
My device is Sony Xperia Z . Thank you for your help.

I am using the default Sony keyboard. I type the Traditional Chinese by the method of Stroke (CJKV character), which is called "筆劃" in Chinese.
Actually, I found the same problem in my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Updated to Yosemite, safari freezes and cannot type into word

I updated to Yosemite and my Safari has been freezing, and MS word will not work, I cannot type into new documents. I can open them, I can type here (so the keyboard works), but I cannot type in word

Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Safari
Right-click or control-click the line and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Quit the application if it's running. Move all files in that folder with a name beginning in "History" to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch the application and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the items you moved back where they were, overwriting the ones that may have been created in their place. Otherwise, delete the items you moved. If possible, restore them from a backup that predates the problem.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • I cannot type Unicode characters (Vietnamese for instance) in Flash input textfields.

Given the same website containing a Flash Input TextField, I can:
    # Type Vietnamese properly on IE
    # Type Vietnamese properly on Google Chrome, but only when the Flash '''wmode''' property is set at "windows" (not transparent, nor opaque, etc.)
    # Type Vietnamese properly on FireFox 3.6
    # '''Cannot''' type Vietnamese properly at all on FireFox 4 Final, no matter what wmode is set to

There are two "serial" numbers (the product number) that came on the product packaging.
The software is Adobe Flash Professional CS5.5 Student and Teacher Edition, purchased from Amazon.com and needed student verification to obtain the license.
^ [ I figured out what was wrong, but I'll just leave the information here for anyone in the future that may have short-term memory as well ]
I have just went through my records that I recovered from my laptop and it seems that the serial number on the product package DOES IN FACT have letters in it.  But I think that I had to register it with Adobe and verify that I was a student before Adobe would give me my legitimate serial number that contained only numbers.  So this is why there are tons of these threads about this that never go answered because the people asking and the people helping are both right and wrong at the same time.  The students are trying to use the only serial that was provided to them, but it isnt the true serial.  Maybe Adobe could be more clear that it isn't a serial number for the product underneath it?   "Product Code" is synonymous with "Serial Number" to most people.
You use this code (the code with letters in it; the "product code") to contact Adobe and verify your status as a studen/teacher and then they give you the true serial number that is all numbers.  Search your email for mail from Adobe to find your serial if you have already done this.  I had completely forgotten how the process worked since it was a while ago.
Thanks for the help Mylenium, I hope this helps whoever comes across it in the future.

  • I cannot type in the search box in iTunes

I cannot type in the search box in iTunes. I have the latest version for Windows as of February 2012. I have had the problem through several releases... over six months. OS Windows 7 and iTunes version is ? (Humm...there is no Help, About.

Welcome to the club, Robert. Don't hold your breath while waiting for help on this "user support" forum. I posted about this issue a week ago, and '''not one person has responded''' unless you count me posting follow-up "replies" in an effort to keep the posted question from disappearing under the avalanche of new questions posted here.
I presume that knowledgeable Firefox users (and developers) either do not read this forum very often, do not care about the problem we are citing, or do not have any clue about what could be causing the issue. I have been using Firefox as my preferred browser for years on my Mac computers, and have never encountered a problem this significant. It is not merely "annoying"; it makes Firefox ''unusable ''on some sites!
My only advice to you is
    # use Safari for those websites where you need to be able to type comments or questions, and
    # hope that '''some developer with Mozilla or Apple''' makes the changes needed to resolve this problem.
Otherwise, we Mac users will have no choice but to abandon Firefox as we get sick and tired of dealing with this issue.
See my own posted question here: [[https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/802601 |Cannot type or paste anything in text boxes at some websites]]
