I cannot update to the latest version of iTunes. Why not? My OS is Windows 7.
This is a new computer. It is 64 bits and I did get a note that said something about needing to change the installer to 64 bits. How do I do that?

Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.

This is a copy of ONEof the keys in the registry I changed as told by Apple support today. I also have changed others as instructed by GEAR software support to manually delete GEAR drivers (that I had installed but couldn't delete some of the others they mentioned from Windows system 32. Then some bright spark at work told me I need the Gear drivers so I downloaded the software and installed again.

I just updated to the latest version of itunes, n ow when I plug in my iphone, it says it cannot sync because "apple mobile device service is not started" this never happen before, what do I do??
The Apple Mobile Device Service is a part of sever programs that "help" iTunes on Windows. It may have been disabled in the Microsoft program, msconfig, or using a third party utility, such as CCleaner.
I would suggest trying to find and enable the service. To do so, click on the start button, click "run", and then type "msconfig" look for the iTunes Helper entry and make sure that it's enabled.
Additionally, there may be another service which you will have to enable. You can type something like "service.msc", (I'm not sure exactly) to see the "Services" control panel and look for it there.
If you can't find either, feel free to post here again.

Cannot update or install latest version of iTunes 10.5.2
I have iTunes running on Windows XP.
I try to update to the latest version of iTunes 10.5.2, by using the menu Help / Check for update. It found the latest version 10.5.2 and download it. During the installation, it says it cannot remove the previous version.
So i download the iTunesSetup.exe manually and install it. During the installation it looks for the file iTunes.msi in this folder but cannot find it so it stops: C:\ Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Apple Software Update\
Help.Try the following steps:
1. Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:

Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:
iTunes
QuickTime

Follow the instructions from Apple article listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to remove all components

When I plug in my iPhone it doesn't even recognize that it is plugged into the computer (although the cord works and the USB port is good).

You may have to follow the slightly more detailed steps in whichever of these two applies to you.

Rebooting into safe mode may be needed to delete any folder the instructions say you should remove. You may also find this Microsoft Fixit helps to remove stubborn components. It has taken some people several attempts to completely clean iTunes and supporting software before they have been able to successfully reinstall it.
