I cannot write (only read) on an external hard drive when I'm running Windows on BootCamp.

I'm running Windows thanks to BootCamp perfectly, but I have a problem. I can open and read files that I have on an external hard drive (HFS+) but I can't create or modify files in it. It's like I don't have permissions. Please, how can I solve this?

Windows can not write to disks formatted with HFS+ without third party software.

  • Cannot Write Files to my Formatted External Hard-drive

I've been struggling with this problem for awhile now. I have a 200GB external hard drive that I used on my windows box. I have music on it and would like to use it on my macbook. When I plug it into my macbook, it mounts and shows up on the desktop. I can go into it in finder, and view the files and folders that are on it. I can also create new folders. However, when I try to read or write files to/from the hard drive, finder stalls at 'zero KB of x MB written'. If I try to copy a file to the drive, the file will be created but it will be of zero or very very small size.
I reformatted the drive with Disk Utility and also via the command line with 'diskutil reformat /dev/disk1s5' and these reformat the drive successfully, but the same problems occur.
What could be going on? The drive is not faulty, and it mounts just fine. I just can't read or write from the drive in OS X.
Please help! Thank you in advance.

The NTFS file format is not really that compatible with macs (you can only "read" files, but not "write" to them). Also, while you can reformat a hard drive with the same or different file type, the NTFS type is the only one that will not let you go from having a NTFS formatted drive and reformatting it as a different format (you can do it again as NTFS but that's it). If you have a FAT or FAT32 formatted drive, you can go and reformat it as NTFS, but once it has had the newer windows format style done to it, you can't change it to anything else.
Also, as I think you said you could read from it at first, and then were not able to?, this would be because the reading of the files would have been fine, but as soon as you went and reformatted it again (which basically wipes the slate clean), you lost all the data that possibly was on there, and now as an NTFS format with no data, therefore nothing for a Mac to get a chance to "read", you have nothing and can only use this as an NTFS drive for windows (or any other possible OS that is NTFS compatible).
Sorry about the bad news... Try to sell it to a windows person and get another external hard drive (formatted as FAT32 or not pre-formatted yet, then format as FAT32) so that you can use that with your Mac...

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

  • Can I install snow leopard on an external hard drive so I can run quicken 2006, and put snow leopard on my imac harddrive

You don't need to erase the drive and repartition from scratch. You may be able to add a second partition on the fly. The caveat here is that once you do that you cannot create a Windows partition using Boot Camp. Of course if you have no plans for Boot Camp then it isn't relevant.
To create a second partition on your existing startup volume:
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
Now, you cannot add a new partition that exceeds the amount of contiguous free space at the end of the drive. Disk Utility will fail to add the partition if it cannot find sufficient contiguous free space. If that's the case then you will need to follow your state outline - backup, boot from clone, erase internal, repartition internal, restore backup to one of the partitions (or both in your case.)

Did you format the external disk on Windows? If you did this, probably the external disk is formatted in NTFS. OS X can't write on this format, so it's normal that it doesn't allow you to copy the files.
In this case, you have three possibilities:
    1. Install Paragon NTFS. This program allows you to write on NTFS partitions.
    2. Copy the hard drive content to your internal disk and format the external disk with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Do it only if you are going to use the external disk only with OS X.
    3. The same as the last one but formatting it with exFAT. This filesystem is compatible with Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8) and OS X (10.6.5 and newer), so you can write and read files on external disks formatted with it on Windows and OS X, but you may have problems on Linux

  • Is there a way we can change the path of the songs to an external hard drive when we move the songs over?   also, is there a way to delete multiple songs easily?

is there a way we can change the path of the songs to an external hard drive when we move the songs over?   also, is there a way to delete multiple songs easily?
I recently moved my songs over for hard drive space.  Really don't want to have to go back through each album, etc... to get that to work.
Last time I tried making a "library" that didn't work either.
On the topic of deleting multiple songs that are the same, is there an easier way then to select each one?
Seems to me apple isn't user friendly

Welcome to the world of digital media. Your can't really transfer it. I don't know what the rules are about transferring to your spouse but I do know that in some cases when you die, your heirs cannot inherit your digital media. This is why there is still an advantage to buying the CD since the usage rights belong to whomever holds the physical media.
A possible workaround is to burn the songs to a music CD with yout account (tracks only without song titles) and then having your wife upload it as a regular music CD onto her account. It's been a while since i've done this so I'm not sure if it would work now.
Please note that I'm not advocating copyright and/or TOS violations. I'm only suggesting ways to copy music for your own personal use which has traditonally been permitted. I only did this because I wanted to convert iTunes songs to mp3 files so I could burn them onto a data CD for use in my car. It would make sense that since married couples are a joint entity, this would be personal use.
Also, I'm not a lawyer so don't take this as legal advice.

  • Administrative rights to external hard drive when using Parallels

I have installed Parallels to run an embroidery software (Floriani) on my MacBook Air.  Both Parallels and the Floriani are running fine and I can see my windows formatted external hard drive when in Floriani and can bring in files from it.  But when I try to save a redesigned embroidery file to the external hard drive it tells me I can not because I do not have administrative rights.  I have tried to also tried to copy embroidery files downloaded from the internet to my Macbook and get the same message.  Since I am the administrator (and only user) of this laptop, how can I get access to the hard drive.  I tried following the all the suggestions in the Help Center for setting permission but even though I can set the drive as a "shared" file I cannot see the "lock'" icon referred to  and in the "Sharing and Permissions" it still says I can only read.  I was told this would be simple???

It is coming from a Windows program (Floriani) AND my Mac/Finder.  From Floriani (Windows program) when I try to save a file to the external hard drive.  And when I try to copy a file from my Mac hard drive to the external hard drive, it just refuses to do it.  I get a "bonk" sound.  So I tried highlighting the external drive in finder, went to "file" then "get info" and it says this is a read only "file"....although it is a hard drive, not a file.  So I tried same with folders on the hard drive.  Same thing.

  • Is there a way for my macbook air (running Lion) to access an external hard drive on my Imac (running snow leopard) specifically for Iphoto and itunes?

Is there a way for my macbook air (running Lion 10.7.2) to access an external hard drive on my Imac (running snow leopard 10.6.8) specifically for Iphoto and itunes?

Yes. For those two applications specifically there is sharing. This presumes both computers are on and connected to the same network.
In iPhoto, enable sharing by (on the iMac) going to the iPhoto menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my photos. You can either share the entire library or only selected albums. Now on your MacBook Air, in iPhoto, go to the same preference pane and select Look for shared photos.
iTunes has something similar. In the iTunes menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my library on my local network. On the other computer, look in the left column for SHARED and select the iMac. You can now play that music on the MacBook Air.
There are other ways to share files but for those two applications this is the simplest way.
    Best of luck.

can I reimage an external hard drive that is in the windows NT file format?

With WinClone 3.x $20 for Mac or with Windows imaging - built into Windows.
Some like Acronis didn't (may now) work on Macs. Many use a linux CD recovery boot..
You can write to NTFS with a simple NTFS driver. There, I strongly recommend Paragon for OS X

They also have all the program and Apple Boot Camp support

  • Will my external hard drive be recognized on the Windows side of my Mac?

I have a 2009 white Macbook 13-inch running Leopard and fairly recently used Boot Camp to install Windows 7.  Unfortunately I made the Windows side too small and I am now considering using an external hard drive to download all of my files I need for work.  I have a few questions...
    1) Is this a possible solution to my problem of no space on my Windows hard drive? and
    2) I read something about my computer not having HFS read support since I didn't upgrade to Snow Leopard or install the Bootcamp driver upgrades (because it is my understanding they require SL).  Will my external hard drive even be recognized by Windows? If not, can I upgrade to SL now and install the Boot Camp drivers before I try to use my external hard drive?
I just really want to do things right this time, since I'm already screwed with the partition size (there is NO WAY I am restoring the partition and reinstalling Windows 7) and I had a lot of hassles with Windows software when I first attempted Boot Camp.  Any help would be great! Thank you very much.

    Hey there Natasha1608,
It sounds like you need to transfer your library that is on your phone to your computer, and point iTunes to your other iTunes library. For the first, you can transfer your iTunes Store purchases to your library with the following article:
iTunes Store: Transfer purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
Keep this in mind from the above article:
This feature works only for audio, video, and apps that you purchased from the iTunes Store. Any items that you imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources won't copy from your device to the iTunes library. However, copies of all PDFs and books from your device's iBooks app will transfer to the computer, regardless of whether they were purchased from the iBooks Store. Learn more about transferring media to your iTunes library.
To point iTunes to another library, use this article:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
    It constantly gets harder.

  • Cannot Delete .trash file of an external hard drive

I am having issues deleteing a .trash file from my Western Digital external hard drive.
I moved 500GB of my photos from that hard drive to a desktop hard drive, they copied to that hard drive and then went to delete the files off my WD. Half way through the deleting it I knocked the hard drive and it ejected. Now it is showing a .trash file that is about 400gb on my WD and if I go to right click delete I get an error saying "cannot delete an unexpected error occured (error code - 50) I had a bit of a look and it looks like I only have the permission to write on it, so I went into get info and change it and the file size went from 400gb to 0kb.
    Any suggestions?
