I cant access my ipod from itunes

ok, ive looked all over itunes to fix this problem. i just bought an ipod video and i just finished downloading my music from my itunes, the only problem is that i cant access my ipod!! there is a icon that looks like a lock near the free space end of my ipod
THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE
Used: 7.79 GB [ ] Free: 20.03 GB (and heres the icon)
so... i can put music onto my ipod, i just cant take it off... or change it...

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". . If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences. For more detail see this tutorial: Managing Your Songs Manually
One thing to be aware of with manually updating is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod
For info: iPod 101
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Cant access purchased movies from itunes store

Hi I have a macbook 10.6.8 and iphone 4. movies I have previously bought in itunes appear on my phone but not in itunes -ive tried to transfer purchased to macbook but keep getting 'itunes temporarily unavailable' despite the fact that Im signed in at time. Im using same id etc as when purchased and have checked my account. im trying to transfer to macbook so that i can sync on to ipad. Searched help topics but no use -i've been trying for several days

It may not be the "file type," but the resolution, if the downloaded movies are "HD."  The tech specs for the 4th gen iPod touch
    http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/specs.html
states the video playback capabilities for the 4th gen iPod touch, where is says TV and Video.  It sounds like 720p (1280x720) is sometimes supported, but not always, and I believe some iTunes Store content is now 1080p.  If you do a Get Info in iTunes on the movies, you should get details about resolution and file type.
However, in any case, for the small size of an iPod touch screen, if the movies you downloaded are "HD" (720p or higher), you should probably download the SD (standard def) version for use with your iPod touch.  The SD version also takes up less than half the storage space of the HD version, and probably uses less battery power when played (because the iPod's processor does not need to work as hard).
I believe you are entitled to download the SD version at no additional cost, if you paid for the HD version.  You should be able to do it from the Purchased screen in the iTunes Store.

  • Can't access files on my ipod from itunes

    Anyone you understand??
I can't anymore access my files on my ipod from itunes. I can see what is there, but it won't allow me to delete any files on my ipod.
At start up, it does the syncronicing, finish in itunes but the display on my ipod never go beyond "do not disconnect". It won't allow me to close/remove the ipod from itunes - error message - some files are in use, can't close down ipod.

if you sync iPod, you can NOT delete music, podcasts, TV shows or videos in the iPod itself. if you want to delete it from the iPod, either delete it from iTunes and at the next syncing, the file will disappear.
Sometimes you also simply have to click a second time on the "eject" button after getting the warning that "some files in use".

    > Go to My Computer (Windows XP) or Computer (Windows Vista or 7) and see if iDevices shows

If you manually manage, then drag and drop what you want.

  • How can I view what is on my iPod from iTunes

I have an iPod Nano 5th gen (click wheel) - 16gb. Apparently, there is no way to view what is/is not on the iPod from iTunes. When I click on music, I can see what playlists/artists/songs are checked for syncing - but not what is currently on the device. So to check, I have to eject, look, then re-connect. Overall, i'm really happy with the iPod compared to my previous zune. But the the zune did display complete device contents, artists, songs, etc from the zune program. Seems like a no-brainer. Overall, I have to say the iPod is way better from the device standpoint - but I'm a bit disappointed with iTunes compared the the Zune program in terms of usability.

    Hello rdorfman,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you click the small black arrow next to your iPod's *Device Name* in the left hand pane of iTunes it should open up a submenu underneath. Go ahead and click on Music to see what songs are currently stored on your iPod.
Is that what you are looking for?

    Hello, cgtyoder.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try resetting the iPod and power cycling your Mac to see if this message disappears.  If the issue persists you may need to restore the device to factory settings.  The article below will walk you through both these steps.

  • Help! Please I can't copy any songs onto my ipod from itunes.

Hi, My ipod syncs Ok, but won't copy songs onto my ipod from itunes. I've tried downloading the latest software, but getting nowhere. Any advice would be greatly appreiciated.

Try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

    Try here:

Not updating the iOS should not effect your problem.
As long as all the apps are in the iTunes library, you will not lose app data by updating the iOS.

NO.  You have to set a pass code.
If you have an iCloud account, and if you set up Find My Phone, and if your iPod is turned on and if your iPod is connected to a WiFi network you can remotely wipe the device, or you can make it play a sound, or you can sent it a message....

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.
