  • IMac G5 cant read and write DVD-R

Hi. I have iMac G5 1.9 with Superdrive MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846 with Firmware Revision: FA0G. Everything was OK, I was able to burn DVD-R and DVD+R too, but now Superdrive ejects all DVD-R disks. I cant burn it, I cant read it. DVD+R are working correctly.
System Profile is saying, that I can burn DVD-R and DVD+R:
    D-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
but everythime I try it, the disk is ejected.
What is a problem? Can anybody help please.
    Thank you.

Make sure you have enough storage space to burn.
Make sure the DVDs are not scratched, smudged and/or dirty.

If your drive needs cleaning, cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
Also, check your Mac OS Help Menu for troubleshooting tips. In the search field type dvd.
You can also open up the "Utilites Folder">Disk Utility.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the black ? mark inside the purplecircle.
The help window will open up.
Enter dvd in the search field.

Why can't you do this? There's plenty of third-party software that can do the job. Download a few from
MacUpdate or CNET Downloads and try them out before choosing one to purchase.

Have you tried using a different brand of optical disk? (You don't say whether you are doing CDs or DVDs.) Some are better than others.

  • CANT BURN DVD's

    hi
i've had this problem with my drive. I never burned dvd's before. I own a macbookpro 15' since over a year and always burned cd's but never dvd's...
until a couple of days ago, i was ripping a dvd from a party of a friend of mine and wanted to copy it with toast... toast wasn't able to copy the it giving me error messages that the source file was damaged and cannot be read.
i managed to copy it manually using "cut n paste".
i tried burning the "file" which i copied from the dvd with roxio toast, burn, and using disk utility and it also didn't work....
i tried using a different empty dvd from a different company... and it suddenly worked.
the funny thing was that the other dvd's that my mac wasn't accepting for some reason, they were accepted by my other macbook pro and i was also able to burn them using another macbook.
    why?
these are the messages i got:
the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media
could not record the disk because there's a problem with the source material - result 18771
can anyone help me please? my cd drive doesn;t to be damaged since i also burned with it different dvds and cds. but why was i getting these messages and why in particular with this dvd?
    thankx.

Hi there, I had this issue before. The solution was not stable so I had to redo the configuration every time I wanted to burn a disc.
You should go to System Preferences Language & Text settings, move English to the top of the list and set the order to English or Standard, don't remember right now, then the system had to be restarted and the burn was done, sometimes it was not and I had to do the configuration again and restart so that I could burn. And also as I created a new burn folder I had to do that again to burn, otherwise I had this not calibrated message.
Search older messages here and you'll find the hole right steps to take.
    Good luck.

  • How do I burn a CD or DVD w/photos from iPhoto

Lost my photos and spent over 2 hours w/Apple Support getting them back into my iPhoto --- but, now I want to burn them on a CD or DVD to have them as back-up (I was walked through the process w/support, but after that and many other things done -- there were no photos on the CD afterall) My Macbook is OS 10.4. I think since there are so many (1900+) I would need a DVD. I have some which say DVD-RW...Video/photos data/4X2hr. Is this what I need? Specific instructions would be nice. The Apple Support person sent me a link -- but it was for 10.5 -- DUH.

    HI Grandie,
First, I'm glad Apple was able to locate your photos on the drive and get them right back into iPhoto where they belong!
Second... does your MacBook have a SuperDrive? It must have one in order to burn to a DVD. To locate this information click the Apple logo top left in your Desktop, then click About This Mac, then click More Info. That will open your System Profiler. When that window opens, go to the Menu at the top and click: View/Full Profile. On the left side it will say: Contents. Look under that category and find where it says: Disk Burning and click that once.
The information for your disk burning capabilities will be listed on the right. It will give you the information. I'm sure you have CD burning, but make sure you have DVD. It will say: DVD-R
** I can't burn a CD or DVD ** <-- from the iPhoto Help Menu
To create CDs with iPhoto, you must have a supported CD-RW (CD Recordable, Read-Write) drive. All Apple internal CD-RW drives work with iPhoto. Use Apple System Profiler to check if your optical drive has CD-burning capability or to see if a connected external CD/DVD drive is supported.
To create DVDs with iPhoto, you must have a supported DVD-R.
You can use CD-R or CD-RW discs to create CDs. CD-R discs must be blank to burn pictures onto them. You cannot reuse or erase a CD-R disc that already has files on it. If a CD-RW disc is not blank, you must erase it before you can put other files on it. Search Mac Help in the Finder's Help menu for information on erasing CD-RW discs.
If your computer or monitor goes to sleep while burning a CD or DVD, you might encounter problems with the disc or with iPhoto. To keep your system from going to sleep, increase the sleep timing settings in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences. Search for "saving energy" in Mac Help for information about changing these settings.
If your burn is unsuccessful and your external drive becomes unresponsive, turn its power off and on to reset the drive.
    * Media that seems to be the best compatible is Maxell, Fuji, and Sony *
I'm wondering if you are trying to burn too many images at one time. Create a new burn playlist in iPhoto, drag about 20 images to that playlist from the Library. Then go to the Menu and click:
    Share/Burn Disk.
I believe CD media can handle up to 700MB of space. Say each of your images is approximately 3MB... times 20 images = 60MB... it can add up FAST. Try one and see if it works... if not,
post back and we'll keep troubleshooting...
One more thing... never touch the disks with your fingers. Hold the disks on the edge only. Look for fingerprints. If there are any, wipe them off with a clean lint free cloth from the inside of the disk out.. not in circles.

  • Burning discs through external DVD burner

I've bought an external DVD burner as PE 10 did not recognise the inbuilt one in windows 8.1.
It does not recognise the new burner either.
How can I tell it where to burn the disc as the "burner location" box is not accessible.
I've tried burning to folder instead and this is fine for playing discs on a computer but they will not play back on a TV through a DVD player in spite of choosing this option when burning discs.
    I hope I haven't wasted my money!

  • More on Problem Burning/Playing Self-playing DVD

Project: to burn and play a self-play DVD
Process: to do this I ....
....first created a slideshow in Keynote
....second exported as a Quicktime movie
....third burned a DVD - however, when placed in a DVD player, I received a message on the player that it was a data disk!
....fourth I used iDVD to create a DVD - however, when it played, "Movies" had to be selected and then the movie to be played had to be selected - what I would like to have is a DVD that will play the movie itself when inserted into a DVD player.
...fifth used iDVD to create another DVD and used its map function and dropped the movie on the firs square for it to be played automatically - this process was suggested in a reply to my post in iDVD- however, it resulted having to make the same selections as before.
...sixth used "Burn.app" which converted my Keynote slideshow to a movie in mpg format and burned the DVD - however, when I played the DVD in a DVD player, the message came up on the TV screen "Playback Prohibited by Area Limitations" and it would not play
I also have used a Burn Folder on which I placed my Quicktime movie but when used in a DVD player, I received the message on TV screen that it was a data disk!
I would appreciate any suggestions, help, and information on how to burn a DVD that will simply automatically play the movie when placed in a DVD player without the introductions and selections to be made when iDVD is used.
Thanks very much for your help.

How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:

  • Burning movies to a dvd

i cant get my downloaded movie,in iTunes, to burn to a dvd-r. I changed my preferences- advanced- burning to data or dvd, but it keeps telling me i need to insert a blank disc. The disc is blank and so i re-insert it and it "checks media" and then quits. I can't figure it out at all. I'd like to watch my movie on my tv, but things aren't looking so good

iTunes doesn't support what you are trying to do. First problem is that it won't let you. The other is that video files are not in a format compatible with playing in a DVD player anyway. If you get a docking station to plug into TV you could play the video on TV that way.
