I cant display icons/files on my desktop background!!

i recently had my macbook serviced after it went into "panic" mode.
anyway, it came back perfectly restored, but for some reason i cant put files/folders/icons on my visible desktop background. It wont let me create icons, and to access the desktop files i have to go through the drop down menus.
How can I change this so i can have files on my actual desktop background again???

try to right click on the desktop and get info and the desktop info window will come out and check the ownership permission, and it should be "read & write" and details (the owner should be you "your name") try it n good luck

  • Display JPEG files not on desktop as thumbnails, not generic icons

I understand from previous forum entries that bringing up menu with command-J and checking "show icon preview" will display image files ON THE DESKTOP as thumbnails. This has worked fine for me. However, most of my image files are not on the desktop.
How do I get the system to display all JPEGs and other images not on the desktop as thumbnails. These are in folders, either on the startup volume or on other volumes.
My son who is a PC user was surprised that my Mac image folders contained all those generic icons and not thumbnails, like he is used to on his PC.
Hope there is an easy answer to this, and I greatly appreciate your help.

I have continued working on this issue since I posed the question, and discovered that I have to have my images in "icon display", not "list display" (which I have usually used).
When I changed to icon display, the menu from command-j allowed me to display all my icons as thumbnails.
The menu (command-j) from the list display doesn't give that option, so I was stumped until I stumbled on to this detail.
Thanks again to all who have helped me in the past on these forums. You're the best.

  • Displaying icon file associated with the exe file.

    Hi ,
I want to display the icon file associated with the an exe file.
I know that it is posssible to (Using wni32 API's) it is possible to extract the ico file. But I don't know how I can display it in my Java application.
It will be great if anybody can throw light on it.
    With Regards,
    Praveena

    Hi,
what functions do you both have in mind when talking about extracting the icon file using JNI and Win32 API? I know there is ExtractIcon in VisualBasic and Delphi that works for this, yet I do not see anything similar in JNI.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gleb.
P.S. You should be able to display .ico files after decoding them & encoding them into gif/jpg in JIMI (Sun package for advanced image/graphics management).

How do I correct this issue that it couldn't display the log?
Note, the logs from prior commands seem to have completed successfully.

I have only error seen the UTL_FILE.READ_ERROR as a result of improper configuration. It is an oracle package error. What is the RDBMS release running the MW tool?
This error is generated when the file permissions or owner are incorrect. I have logged a bug to have the entire 11i Pre-Upgrade Patching section removed. The patches being merged and applied are applied again later in the functional steps so that section is really not necessary.

  • Deleting files out of system preferences desktop background.

Does anyone know how to delete files out of system preferences>desktop & screen saver?
Some how when adding one photo to the file for the desktop background it took the entire photo file. So that instead of one photo for the file it has over 200 now. Read everything and tried everything. Still can't figure out how to delete that file from the list.
I know how to add photos or whatever to use as desktop background just no idea how to remove them from the list.
    Any ideas?

    Doug,
When you go to system preferences>desktop & screen savers>desktop. On the left is a window with the names of the images listed. Apple Images, Nature file, Plants file, Picture Folder, Choose Folder and so forth. The ones that come with Apple products. Not sure what all else is native to Apple.
Iv been using my own desktop background since the day I got the iBook. Normally I just get one photo or image and more it there to use. But, last week I did something different or wrong. Maybe holding a button to long, not sure. Instead of moving the one photo it moved the entire photo file. That file had over 200 (2,500x1,800 in size & over 550KB for each) and probably closer to 250 photos in it.
Way to many to be there. And I simply can't find a way to remove that file from the desktop list. I can high light it, but it doesn't delete with the delete button. I can high light it, but it doesn't change anything in system preferences banner to edit, view, etc....to remove it either. It won't click & drag to trash.
Being very careful because I don't want to delete the file and by error delete it totally off the computer. I could creat a new file with only 1 photo in it for use as the desktop background. Then try to choose that file. However, since the last big OS-X update it's been doing this. Everytime I choose a file or photo it's adding the entire file not just the 1 photo. And Iv managed to add 3 files so far to that list.
    Any ideas? Thx, Mike

  • Desktop Backgrounds Limited

So this is an odd one. Leopard will only let me set it's own images as backgrounds. If I choose from my iPhoto Events or individual folders (in the sidebar), the background will only show as a light blue color, no matter which one I click. However, the pictures show up in the box as well as in the preview rectangle (unless I click Center or Tile, then it's that blue again). Using 10.5.1 with the full .1 install. Any suggestions?
PS - I wonder if it could be related to my other issue - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1270205&tstart=0
Update: Turns out, if I manually add my Pictures (or a subfolder of it) folder, then the backgrounds work perfectly. A workaround I can deal with, but would definitely rather have the original functionality work.

10.5.2 Update: Problem persists, but it indeed is related to my other issue with Mosaic screensaver display (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1270205&tstart=0). Turns out, I can only display the photos as a desktop background (through the automatically created Events) if they also appear correctly when running a photo mosaic screensaver. Since only a handful of my many thousands of images do this, I am quite limited to which I can have it show as a background. Of course, my workaround mentioned above works fine, but it is ridiculous to have such a basic feature be so messed up.
I've erased the desktop.plist file and don't know what else to try. Any suggestions?

  • Adding a swf for your desktop background

    Hey everyone,
A buddy and i were talking about if it was possible to add a
swf for your machines desktop background. I have seen animated
backgrounds before but never put much thought into it so we tried
loading a swf and it didnt work... does anyone know how to create
    on of these?
    Thanks!

I created a 1024 x 768 image in Photoshop; saved it as .PNG
file and imported it in Flash 8. I added a few buttons to it and
published the file in .SWF and .HTML so that I could use the html
file as my Desktop background. The published file size is also 1024
x 768. When I apply the html file as my desktop background, the
image on the desktop is pushed down and right leaving a 1/4" border
at the top and left side of the screen, cutting off the bottom and
right side of the image. However, when I publish the file in
animated GIF or just set the .PNG image as my Desktop background,
they align correctly on the Desktop. How do I change the alignment
of the published html file on my Desktop?
Thanks; I only spent a whole day on this today...

  • Why does my preferred desktop display immediately switch to another display when I open an icon on the current desktop?

why does my preferred desktop display immediately switch horizontally to another display when I open an icon on the current desktop?

That's not a shortcut you are creating with "save as", you are saving a copy of the webpage to your desktop - hence the folder with files for that webpage.

Drag applications from your main desktop off the right side of the screen and they will appear on the TV.  This is the extended desktop mode.

  • MBP is missing the "Display" icon in Sys Pref, Display PrefPane file needed

    Hi,
I noticed that my "Display" icon under >Hardware, in the System Preferences is suddenly missing. It should be between "CDs & DVDs..." and "Energy Saver" icons. I think I need the Display Preferences Pane. Can anyone send me a copy, I don't have another Mac to copy it from (except a really old 10 yr imac running System 9). I don't know why it is missing, but I can't calibrate my display without it. The "display.prefpane" file is located under system>library>PreferencePanes. My email address is: melissa (at) melissatobiaart (Dot) com
If anyone can send me a copy I would greatly appreciate it!

The file is part of the OS X system therefore it's proprietary to Apple. Furthermore, it's a violation of the Apple Software License to install OS X on more than one CPU at a time (for a single-licensed copy. The Family Pack allows up to five concurrent installations.)
As the AD belongs to Apple it would be against the Terms of Use for us to enable any of the above. Thus, it's both inappropriate to ask as well as to send.
That's my interpretation of the software license. You may choose to interpret it differently or even ignore it, but such actions are best left off of the forums.
I would be more than happy to inquire of the moderators and report back what they suggest.

  • NT Desktop Perference display icon is not working

    Hello:
I am using ConsoleOne version 1.3.5 to manage our Novell servers, there
is an User Package object, in Policies -> WinNT-2000 -> NT Desktop
Preference -> Properties -> Desktop Preferences -> Settings, there is
a "Display" icon to allow us to setup Wallpaper under the roaming profile
for all workstations, but when I click on it, it is not working, please
    advise.
    Thanks.
    Kevin

If you are running a local copy of ConSlowOne try running the .exe from
the server - I have found that some of the ZEN features don't work running
from a copy of ConSlowOne on the workstation.

  • Displaying complete file names on the desktop

I think there was a way to get the finder to display the complete file names on the desktop. Some terminal command. Can anybody help?

I have files on the Desktop that don't have that issue. But when I add characters to them I eventually reach the breaking point -- 37 characters is fine; 38 characters causes the file name to truncate. I suppose there may be a way to set a secret pref to show a larger number of characters using Terminal.
Anyone know how many characters the OS file system is limited to -- ignoring display issues, I mean?

  • Icons files will not displaying when running web-based forms locally

My icon files (jpgs) are not displaying from within Forms Developer 10g or when I run the web-based forms from within Developer. I have tried the following without success:
6.4 Deploy Icons for Forms Running on Web
Option One: For Running Web Based Forms from Within the Forms Builder in Oracle 10g Developer Suite
    1) Copy all the icon image files (*.jpg) to the directory of <Oracle_10g_Developer_Suite_Installation_Root_Dir>\forms\j2ee\formsapp\formsweb\icons
    2) Make sure to set imageBase=DocumentBase in the file < Oracle_10g_Developer_Suite_Installation_Root_Dir >\forms\server\formsweb.cfg.
    3) Edit the < Oracle_10g_Developer_Suite_Installation_Root_Dir >\forms\java\oracle\forms\registry\Registry.dat file, specify the icon image file extension by modifying the following line:
    default.icons.iconepath=icons/
    default.icons.iconextension=jpg
    Save this Registry.dat file.
    4) Restart the OC4J Instance.
    5) Launch the form from Forms Builder.
