I cant find my files on my hard drive!

I reinstalled macosx tiger in order to fix a corrupted file, but now all my music is missing. I reinstalled by using the archive option so nothing would be deleted, and all of my apps are on the computer, but i dont have any videos, music, or documents. is there a way to find these things? I know they're on the hard drive somewhere because im still missing a bunch of space on it. i've tried using the search function but nothing is working. is there anything else i can do?

See if anything in this document helps:

  • Can't find imovie file on my hard drive

I have a imovie file on my hard drive that I can't find. I really want to delete it so
that I can free up some room on my hard rive. It's at least 15 gigs big. I tried using the search icon in the upper right hand corner and I tried using the 'find' option under the 'finder' menu, searching for any files over 5 gigs in size. Can anyone help me find this file so I can get rid of it?

An iMovie project is a package, not a file; the actual files inside it are smaller. Use a tool such as WhatSize to locate it.

  • Finding RAW files on Portable Hard Drive

I've just bought a Portable Hard Drive for storing my RAW files. (LR recommended good practice, keeping 50% of my C drive empty!!)
Now...I am able to download from my Memory Card to the Portable Drive and tell LR where to find the images. - That's dandy!.
I can even move a small number (e.g. 6) RAW files from the C drive to the portable drive. The thumbnail then gets a "?" and when selected, tells me it cant find the (RAW) file and asks me where it is. I can do that since I moved them to a portable drive folder that I set up - That's fine too
What I don't know is how to move 3,000+ RAW files in (e.g.) 75 folders from the C drive to the portable drive without having to tell LR where EVERY one of them is.
    LR help says
To locate missing photos in a folder and its subfolders, select a folder in the Folders panel, choose Library > Synchronize Folder, and click Show Missing Photos.
But if I understand this correctly it is simply showing me that there are missing photos (not where they ought to be)
More helpfully, LR help also says
3(Optional) In the Locate dialog box, select Find Nearby Missing Photos to have Lightroom search for other missing photos in the folder and reconnect them automatically.
Does this mean I need to specifically describe the location of ONE from each folder then let LR find NEARBY Missing RAW files?
This might be a daft question, but do I need to set up my portable HD directory structure to be the same as my C drive to automate the synchronize??
Sorry if I'm missing what everyone else knows.

I have the same problem in reverse.  I have always had my original files on my external drive (and it just saved me in a crash last month.<br /><br />However now I -have copied- all my files to E: (an internal drive on my new computer), so I am 'missing' all my files.<br /><br />I understand the concept above about creating a master folder in LR2, and then does tha mean that you can locate one file in the master, and ask for all missing near that one and that it -will- go down to all subfolders?<br /><br />Lastly, how do I (we) get there from here?<br />On my hard drive, I do have a master folder.  It is E:\PictureFolder.  Everything I own is under that one, in their own major subject folders (01FamilyMiller, 02FamilySharp, etc.).  Under those are yyyymmdd_<shootname> folders with the actual files.<br /><br />In LR2, I have imported the <shootname> folder only, so LR has 20080101_NewYearsAtLeslies, 20080430_VermontTrip, etc., e.g. strictly chronological, even though they are in separate category folders on the hard drive.<br /><br />Maybe now is the time to put major subject area and personal vs. professional master folders on LR2.<br /><br />Before I do any changes to folder structure in LR2, how do I get my hard drive folders connected to the ones in LR2, en masse?<br /><br />Do I just create PictureFolder in LR2 and then move all the "?", chronological LR folders under it??

  • How to find movie file from external hard drive in imovie?

i shot 29 gig of video on the road. i imported it into my macbook to the desktop. then i drag and dropped it into an external hard drive. now i have since dragged and dropped the file to my imac at home to work with it in imovie, but imovie cannot find any mpeg or any such movie file. i then tried to put it back to the canon hg10. after i plugged in the canon, i dragged the movie folder to the canon and it imported 29 gig. but the canon does not show any new movie files in the video mode. when i open import options in imovie, no new movies appear. any ideas?

For iMovie to see your file, it must be either on the internal drive, or it can also be on an external drive that is formatted as Mac OSX Extended (Journaled). (Not FAT32).
For the internal drive, your clips must be stored in a folder inside the Movies/iMovie Events/ folder.
For the external drive, your clips must be stored in a folder within the iMovie Events folder at the top level of the drive. Move your files there and then start iMovie, and it should see them.

  • Can't find my files on external hard drive

My old computer (iBook G4) recently died, and I extracted the Hard drive from the computer. I got an external enclosure for the hard drive and got it up and running, and it shows up on my MacBook Pro.
My problem is that I can't find the files I really want, which were in the "Users" file. I can get to the Users file, and it says that there is 15GB in the folder, but when I open it there only like two files, and I even checked the hidden folders and they simply weren't there. Any ideas?

I'm guessing it's related to Permissions have you tried repairing them on the old volume ?
Did you try running Migration Assistant to see if it can see the content you want to bring over ?

  • Finding Latest Files added to hard drive

I've got a peculiar problem here. Since yesterday or the day before my available hard drive space has dropped around 3 gigabytes. Thing is, I've installed nothing, downloaded nothing, nor added nothing to the computer. Is there a way to perform a search or listing of files that have been added to the computer based on a date or date range? I know back in pre-OSX days you could view all new or modified files based on a date or range and plug in a file size too.
How can I perform this search and find what has eatten up 3 gigs of space? Thanx.

Uh, never mind. Found out how to add the search features needed to create the appropriate parameters for the search.

  • Finding .m4p files on external hard drive so they can be deleted????  Help

I just copied my very large music library from one external hard drive to a second external hard drive. I am giving the hard drive to my daughter at college, but before I do, I want to remove all the .m4p protected songs from the second drive so the protected music doesn't fall into other peoples hands.
When I search the drive, it finds no .m4p files. I think it is because the search function is not looking into the sub folders. In other words, I click on the hard drive, it expands to show all the artist names. I then do a search for *.m4p and it comes up with nothing. Clearly I do not want to go through each album name under each artist because there are about 4000 artists and 50,000 songs.
How can have have the search function look into every file and identify all the *.m4p files so I can delete them before sharing?
    Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am not sure I understand....
Is there not a way to do a search of a disc to find all .m4p files in folders and the sub folders?
    You can use the terminal:
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    mac $ ls /Volumes/Spotless/spotless.*
    /Volumes/Spotless/spotless.png
    mac $ ls /Volumes/Spotless/spotless*
    /Volumes/Spotless/spotless-test.m4p     /Volumes/Spotless/spotless.png
    mac $ find /Volumes/Spotless/  -iname '*.m4p'
    /Volumes/Spotless//spotless-test.m4p
Run the list command to see what files will be found.
    mac $ find /Volumes/Spotless -name '*.m4p'  -exec ls {} \;
    /Volumes/Spotless/spotless-test.m4p
Be careful with this command. The rm commands will delete a file.
    mac $ find /Volumes/Spotless -name '*.m4p'  -exec rm -i  {} \;
    remove /Volumes/Spotless/spotless-test.m4p? y
    mac $
It seems strange that I would need a 3rd party ap to do so.
the Spotless facility was introduced with tiger. Spotless does not do well when searching by filename.
I have found that spotlight is inconsistent when searching by filename. To search by filename, try:
    FindAnyFile
"This is a free program for Mac OS 10.4 and later that lets you search for files on your disks, primarily on HFS formatted ones."
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
    EasyFind
An alternative to or supplement of Spotlight and finds files, folders or contents in any file without the need for indexing.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/easyfind.html
Sometimes I have to resort to Unix.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
I prefer to use iname instead of name because iname is case independent whereas name is case depended.
#this command finds anything starting with python
    find / -iname 'python*'
You can also run commands against the found file. Be careful. Always list the file before doing something.
    # this is the safe list command. No changes are made.
    find /home/robert -user robert -exec ls {} \;
    {} is the filename
\; is the required characters for lineend

  • IMac Core 2 Duo running 10.4.8 not finding all files in network hard drive

I've got >12,300 songs on a Buffalo LinkStation (NAS) that is set to allow both Macs and Windows computers read it. My Wndows XP computers recognize all the files, but my iMac 2GHz Core Duo with 10.4.8 doesn't. I consolidated all my music using iTunes on my Windows XP laptop and then returned the folder to my NAS. No improvement. My iMac still won't see all the music. What's more, it seems to be totally arbitrary. It will see all files from Michael Jackson's Thriller except "Wanna be startin' somethin'" and then will see only one of three songs by Kenny Rogers, the two unrecognized being "Lucille" and "The Gambler." Don't even get me started on my U2 folder or any of my Rap albums. Is it an index problem? How do I fix this?
iMac with 2Ghz Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Lee: I have no idea whether this is the problem, but I am recently aware of my own issues with a Buffalo Linkstation and they relate to the NAS drive's not being able to read file names with certain characters like "/" "|" "*" and the like. I was testing out a backup program (Synk, Standard Ed.) to back up various files and got a huge number of error messages, apparently resulting from "illegal" file names. This is apparently because the Linkstation's kernel is Linux and these special characters mean something special to the OS. Why Buffalo claims that the product is mac-compatible is another matter.
    Anyway, I hope this helps.

I downloaded a .zip file. It ate up my space and i cant find the file. How can i get this file off my phone?

Not possible. Safari won't download and save a Zip file. You either had to use a 3rd party app, or as wjosten suggests, your phone is jailbroken. If the former, you'll need to use that app to find it. If the latter, you'll have to look elsewhere for assistance.

  • I can't get my music to play in my itunes. It comes with a exclamation mark next to the song numbers and says that the original songs can't be played cause cant find the file. How do I get the songs back? (I found the files)

I can't get my music to play in my itunes. It comes with a exclamation mark next to the song numbers and says that the original songs can't be played cause cant find the file. How do I get the songs back? (I found the files

You get exclamation marks or dead tracks because  iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed.
If you use an external drive, a change in drive letter is a common cause and you need to change it back.
AS a way of working out what has happened, right click on a track and select the summary tab (you will have to go past an error message). The summary tab will tell you where iTunes thinks the track is located. How does that compare with where the track actually is?
The xml library file is not used by iTunes, it is created to allow other programs to access the library. You can recreate the iTl file from the xml file, but there is no point if the location of the files is wrong.
There is a simple way of getting you music back in iTunes, but it loses all playlists counts and rating. To do this drag iTunes library.itl and iTunes Library.xml to your desktop. Then open iTunes and an empty library is created. Add you iTunes Media folder to it.
If you can't work out what went wrong and how to fix it, you may have to do this.

  • Finder freezes when trying to move files to external hard drive

Whenever I try to move files from internal hard drive to my external finder freezes it. I have over 5 TBs of free space on my external, so I know it's not a space issue. This happens no matter the size of the file. It starts the copy and then will freeze before it finishes. If I try to force quit and select relaunch it acts like it is relaunching but my icons never re-appear and the command bar at the top never returns. So I end up having to hard boot.
I just reinstalled the 10.5.8 combo update and verified both hard disks, if any repairs came up I repaired and then did the same with disk permissions....it's still freezing on me. I am frustrated because there are some files I'd really like to move to my external raid hard drive but I'm not able to.
The freezing happens if I'm trying to transfer files from a disc or an additional external HD. My internal HD is only so big and the external Raid drive is for my capture scratch on Final Cut Pro and I'm even having issues capturing to that drive. Everything wants to be on my internal HD and that doesn't work for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean Dale1 wrote:
Do you get any error messages and if so what are they? Do you have any problems copying files off the problem drive back to your Mac or do the freezes only occur when copying to the external?
No I don't get any error messages, the finder just freezes and when I try to relaunch finder it doesn't relaunch properly..all icons are missing and I'm not able to access the the task bar to properly shut down so I have to hard boot.
It happens only when trying to save files to the external, whether through drag and drop or within programs. I am able to access files on the external and copy files from there to my internal without problems.
Have you tried attaching this drive to another Mac and if so do you get the same issues?
I don't have another Mac to attach the drive to.
How is this RAID attached, SCSI, FireWire, SATA or what? How was the RAID created, Disk Utility or third party software and have you verified the integrity of the RAID?
The RAID is attached via SCSI. In an attempt to solve this finder issue I re-installed the drivers to the most current drivers available and in doing so updated any firmware....and there was no change. I was not the one who set up the RAID so I don't know how it was created. It's an Enhance UltraStore R16 and I've been using it without issues since January 2007 and this freezing thing has been intermittent for a few months now but now it's constant and annoying. I've verified the disk through disk utility but I don't have any software to check the integrity otherwise. Do you have any recommendations as to what software I could use to do this?

  • Excel cant find this file when double clicking to open

    Hi,
Our Imacs 10.8.2 and 10.7.3 joined to windows 2008 domain cant open certain excel files from the network share. When double clicking the file or opening from excel -> file open it says it cant find the file. If I drag the file to the desktop then it will open when double clicked. I have tried disconnecting the network drive and reconnecting. I checked permissions and even tried a few cleaner products such as mac keeper and ccleaner and still the same issue. I even upgraded one of the macs from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3 and the issue persisted. Its very strange as some users can open but others cant. Any insight greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Lorne

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")
