I cant preview jpegs in LR3??

i have raw files and jpeg fiels on the same sd card.
i went to import them, and i cant see the jpegs. its like they are not on the card.
but if i look with finder i can see them on the sd card??
any ideas.

Lightroom can import the JPEGs as sidecars or as separate images. It would seem that you have Lightroom configured for the latter. You can change the behaviour from within Lightroom Preferences

What good are the preview JPEGs? (newbie question)

Dear Folks,
I'm new to converting raws to DNGs, and I can't seem to find any use for the preview JPEGs that DNG converter can embed in the file.
Mac OSX (10.4.11) doesn't display them in Finder windows (Icon view mode). Get Info windows can show me a small preview whether or not I embed a JPEG. Mac OSX's Preview program can't display DNG files whether or not JPEGs are embedded in them. I don't see any difference in the functionality of Bridge and Photoshop whether they're there or not.
That pretty well describes my entire photo workflow, so if previews really are irrelevant to it, seems to me I might as well leave them out and save a little processing time and disk space.
Am I missing something obvious? (probably)

Nope, no such implication whatsoever. I entirely understand the theoretical benefit. I've just been trying to find out if they'll benefit me.
BUT... here's an unexpected curiosity. I just ported one of my freshly-baked DNG file to a friend's brand new Mac, so it's running the latest versions of everything and it ought to be pretty much a stock configuration.
It can't read my DNG preview JPEG, either! When I drag the DNG file into the Preview app, it shows me a question mark, not a preview! I just double-checked, and I am generating the DNGs using the default settings in Adobe DNG Converter (medium JPEG, lossless compression, non-linear, no embedded RAW, etc.)
So, what's going on?! Ramon confirms that DNG previews should be viewable under Mac OSX. Either I'm doing something wrong (entirely likely) or there's something broken in A-DNG-C.
The DNG files I'm generating look perfectly fine in Adobe Bridge/ACR/Photoshop, by the way. It's something hinky with the JPEGs.
Anybody got a clue? I'm fresh out!

Keywords won't save to JPEG from LR3

I have an interesting problem I can't resolve. I imported some JPEGs into LR3 and added keywords, title and description to the first one. I then used Sync Metadata to add the same keywords to the second file. All shows normally in LR. I then edited the keywords a bit, changed the title and description, and then after selecting both, I saved metadata to file using the right-click menu.
The first image has all information saved to the file (I'm using both Prostockmaster and Irfanview to check), but nothing I do will make the metadata appear in the second image. I tried exporting to a new file name with no success, tried modifying the keywords again and saving to file, basically tried everything I can think of, but I cannot get the metadata into the file. If it was just one image, this wouldn't be a great problem, but it has happened to several that were handled similarly.
The JPEGs came from an export from LR from original Canon raw files (no keywords at that stage) if that makes a difference.
Any ideas?

Did you notice that you need to specify for each keyword, if it will be included on export? You do so in editing the keyword tag (right-click on a keyword, chosse edit..).
The keywords that won't save - how are they specified regarding export?
When you export from raw to jpeg, do you tick "minimize embedded metadata" in the export dialog ? When I do so, no keywords will be exported (neither EXIF info about lens and lighting etc.).
So you might give it a try to first check on the keyword tag properties, then exporting without the minimizing metadata tick.

Extracting preview jpeg...

Hi...first post here...I'm wondering if there is any way to extract the preview jpeg created at import...this is a very useful feature in Aperture when working with offline images (allows you to still send email etc. of images not in the computer, but in the catalog) not to mention it can save your butt if you ever lose a drive...any help is much appreciated...

This has been covered in detail in a few other threads. Do a forum search for printing with draft mode 1:1 previewss and you shoulld find more on this.

All of a sudden I cant preview any of my pages

I really need this resolved. All of a sudden, I cant preview any of my pages. I hit F12 and absolutely nothing happens. It was working fine last night. Ive tried setting the default browser to IE, but it wont preview in that or Firefox(my default). Just remains completely unresponsive. Did I hit some weird setting by accident, im so lost here. I've selected my browser madd times but when i try to preview via the menu as opposed to F12 it says no browser selected. wtf

First, make sure you have not inadvertently disabled your Function keys. On my keyboard, there is an "F Lock" key off to the right of F12.
Then, make sure your browsers are listed. Do Edit > Preferences > Preview in Browser to check the list of browsers and to assign F12 to the one you want to see most often. You may have to navigate to the exe file to 'show' Dreamweaver where the browsers are. Select a browser and press the Edit button at the top right of that dialog box.
You cannot, of course, preview in browsers that you have not loaded into your machine. They are free; go get em!
Also remember that you can't initiate Preview in Browser if you are looking at your page in Live View.

What is the use of preview JPEG embedded in DNG?

I tried converting a CR2 file to DNG, choosing different size JPEG preview, including full, medium and none. The converted DNG file all look the same when I open them in LR3. So the image we see in the library and develop module is not the JPEG embedded in DNG??? What is the JPEG preview used for then?

I never was able to see any preview in Windows 7, whether I use Canon's CR2 or DNG.
You need WIC codecs for the given format. If you have the codecs installed Vista/Win7 will be able to display thumbnails in Explorer and previews in the built-in preview apps. As far as I know there are free codecs available from manufacturers for most raw formats (Nikon, Canon, DNG), but most (all?) are 32-bit only. There's a commercial third-party 64-bit DNG codec available.
So what application on Windows 7 takes advantage of the preview exactly?
I use the free IrfanView. It does use embedded previews from all raw files, both proprietary and DNG. It can be configured to demosaic too.

images from Photoshop to DW. I get the Image Preview dialog as
usual. But any image I want to preview as a JPEG is not previewing.
The preview is blank. I can change the settings and it will insert
the image. I can change the settings to a GIF or PNG and it
previews but not a JPEG.
Any ideas what's going wrong.

Ripped DVD, Converted to QT, Cant preview in FCE

I have bits and peices of a DVD that I ripped using Mactheripper, then converted by Handbrake, then converted to Quicktime.
I can view the clips in Quicktime.
I can import the QT Clips into FCE and see them in the browser. I can put those clips into the timeline. What I cant do is see any sort of preview by hitting the play button in the canvas.
Can someone figure out what I am doing wrong?

You're using Handbrake. That's for converting to iPod and such. It's not for production. Use MPEG Streamclip to convert your DVD.

RAW vs JPEG in LR3+PS ACR and PS Filter

I have a custom made lens profile (Canon 17-35 2.8 on EOS 5D) made with RAW files.
It works fine for CR2 (RAW) files in LR3+Photoshop ACR and Photoshop filter,
but
- fails (doesn't appear in list) for JPEG files (same body/obj combo) in LR3+PS ACR
- is OK with PS filter.

No. By default, PS prefers non-raw profiles if both matching raw and non-raw exists for the lens (the matching raw profile does not show). There is a flyout menu to revert such preferences. That said, in the case that matching raw profiles existing but not non-raw profiles, PS takes the route of pragmatism to still give user a choice of applying the raw profiles (In general, the geometric and vignette correction would still be good even if it is raw), but the user would need to know this is not the best choice.

I'm not previewing the image in a browser. Maybe I'm not
explaining the problem very well. This is what's happening:
What I'm doing is creating an html doc in DW. Then go back to
Photoshop create a selection around what I want to insert in my DW
page. I copy the selection using Copy Merged. This will copy all
layers. Then I open my DW page. Use the Paste command to insert the
image. When I do this I get an "Image Preview" dialog. It works
very similarly to the Save for Web function in Photoshop. There you
can optimize your image and place it on your html page. What's
happening with me is that the the preview that I'm viewing in
"Image Preview" (in DW) when viewed as a jpeg is blank. When I
preview as a gif or png I can view the image.

When I place video clips on the timeline, they play fine. However, if I add an effect (such as RGB curves) the preview is black/blank, with a red line over the clip in the timeline, and when I hit play or scrub the timeline the preview remains black, with only audio. Also, when i place an image (such as JPEG) on the timeline, same thing happens. Black. I have had these results using various clips: h264 in mp4, 3gp, avchd, uncompressed avi.
Rendering allows it to play (green line). Export video works fine.
After Effects seems to be working as normal. Could this be a problem with compatibility between the mercury playback engine and the intel hd 3000 graphics? I have updated to the latest and tested intel drivers from the Asus website. This is a brand new computer. I find it hard to believe that the integrated graphics won't handle this.
I have no third-party effects or codecs installed.
I am running no other software.
Here's more detailed system info:
Asus P8Z68-V LX.
- Intel Z68 chipset. Intel HD 3000 graphics. i7 2600k CPU. 8GB 1600Mhz RAM. HDMI output @ 1360x768px
- Using windows 7 ultimate SP1 64-bit. Adobe CS5.5 full suite. (inc. Premiere Pro CS5.5.2)

Poor JPEG quality LR3

Hi,
I have just spent hours and hours editing a number of photos (in RAW format) in LR3, including plenty of adjustments using the the sharpening tool brush, but when it comes to exporting the images to JPEG they resulting images are of poor quality compared to how they look when i have finished editing the RAW files.
So my question is that, how Can i get the JPEGS to more accurately reflect the way the images look after editing, before i exported to JPEG from RAW?
I am shocked at how poor quality they are once exported to JPEG. I mean, why should I have bothered to sharpen the images up myself, for LR3 to then disrgegard these adjusments, leaving me with soft JPEG's??
I am now starting to feel as though this software may be waste of money

I am not sure how I can provide evidence of the problem with both a JPEG and RAW file??! What should i do to allow this??
When i export I select JPEG, Qaulity 100, Sharpen for screen - High. Thats pretty much all i have changed.
The colour space is RGB and the resolution is 720ppi - but i havent touched either of these so dont know what the best setting is - especially for ppi?
When i have both the RAW and JPEG open side by side I can see, for example the creases in someones face nice and clearly on the RAW file, but on the epxorted JPEG these details are lost. I worked hard to retain these details, but in JPEG they are lost!

Preview jpeg rotation strangeness

Hi,
when I open a jpeg picture that I've downloaded (or dragged to the Desktop from Safari or Firefox) with Preview, rotate the picture in Preview and then save and reopen it (again with Preview), the picture is not rotated.
Preview seems to work on the picture, because the the modification date is changed after saving it, but it is not rotated.
I've read about the EXIF-compatible way Preview rotates pictures, but this should only cause problems with other applications, not Preview itself.
Furthermore not all jpegs are affected, but most I've tried, since I've discovered the problem.
Jpegs I've created with PS work rotate just fine in Preview.
Maybe someone can shed some light on this.
Preview version is 3.0.9 (409).

Raw Photos Become Red Jpegs in LR3

Hello: I am having trouble when I use Lightroom 3 and I try to export my raw photos as jpegs. I require the Jpegs so I may send them on the web to either friends, or, to a company like istock. When I view the jpegs, they are often too red in color (this is seen in landscapes but is especially noticed in peoples skin tone...which often makes them look sunburnt or unrealistic) and they do not match my raw photos (often these are processed in CS5 and I view all photos on my Hp LP2475w monitor). Note that both LR and CS5 have been updated to the most current versions. I also calibrate my monitor with a Spyder 3. Naturally, I have tried to individually correct this color shift for each photo, but it can be a most laborious chore and it never looks quite right. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct this? Many Thanks...

Same problem here. I do not understand what one means by exporting with ICC... jpeg are always exported using sRGB...it is the default LR. On a different note I CANNOT export with resolution less than 80 even when the slider is at 30... (the 87 in Picasa properties.)

The first and third and fourth are different attempts in LR 3.6 all transferred to jpeg as sRGB... the second one, with a better exif, is from Capture One. This is the color as taken -- the LR is simply too red. It looks like LR is NOT
a) getting the jpeg compression as required and
b) not rendering the local ICC (ProPhotoRGB) into sRGB... as found when loading the jpeg into PS5...
That seems to be either a user error... but I cannot figureout how to fix it.... or a possible bug...
