I cant use my external harddrive on my macbook

I cant use my external harddrive on my macbook, only on windows based computers. how to fix this so I can copy files to the harddrive?

Your external drive is formatted as NTFS.
OSX cannot write to NTFS formatted drives.
If you want to use your drive for both PC and Mac,  you need to format it as either ExFAT or FAT.
If you intend to use it only on your Mac, then, format as HFS+.
Use Disk Utility to reformat your drive. You will lose all the data on the drive when reformatting.

Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

  • Using an external harddrive with two different Macs

I have an iMac flat screen, 800 MHz. I've had great luck with this computer until now. Yesterday I purchased a new iPod Video not realizing it would not support FireWire. My old iPod's jack became very loose, so I finally relented and bought a new iPod. I know that there's no way to upgrade my USB to 2.0; however, all my music is on an external harddrive. Can I connect it to my wife's new Mac Book Pro, set up playlists on her iTunes, and refresh my iPod's playlists that way, but still use my external harddrive on my iMac? I'm worried about losing information, specifically all my music. I can upload music to my iPod using my iMac, but it's so slow (10mbs). With my old iPod I could upload lots of music in a few minutes, now it takes hours.

Have a look under the "itunes" help forum.. there you will be able to find (or do a search for) keeping our music library on an external hard drive. Configure your wife's Macbook Pro to use the library on the external drive and you shouldn't have trouble. I would set up another user account on the Macbook Pro so that your wife is still able to have a music collection of her own. Good luck!

  • How do i use an external display with my macbook pro?

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • Using an external display with the macbook air

hi, i wanna know if i can use an external display with the macbook air as the tunderbolt is a bit pricey? i was thinking about buyin a LCD moniter wih a VGA port. many thanks

Yes.  You can use VGA DVI or HDMI monitors by buying a  Minidisplay port to xxx adapter and the the appropriate cable (vga, dvi or hdmi).
The MiniDisplayport adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port.

Here's a sample HDMI adapter.  All these available in the Apple online store.

  • Can you use any external display with a macbook?

    hi all,
I was just wondering, can you use any external display with a macbook? (i.e. gateway, and dell displays?)

    To original poster:
    Yes.
Provided you have the appropriate ports and cables, that is. Some monitors do not have all vga, dvi-i, dvi-d, hdmi, etc. ports, and it can be misleading that all those technologies appear to be compatible via conversion cables (they aren't all meant to be compatible, so look it up on the internet before buying).

  • Use one external harddrive on both pc and mac at the same time

i bought an iomega external harddrive today
can i use it on both mac and pc at the same times?
    for ex:
when i plug in both computer
i could able to read and write on the hdd on both computer
since i format it into 4 partitions (2 journal and 2 doc)
so i wish i can use them separately in 2 computers

Hi Jerry_L and welocme to Discussions,
using such USB or Firewire connected external harddrives with two computers at the same time is usually not recommended by the manufacturer.
Doing so might lead to data-loss and the like.
Check with the manual of that harddisk to verify.
Using it with one computer at a time with your partitioning should be doable.

  • How can I get songs not purchased on itunes off of my ipad2 and into itunes without using an external harddrive?

This has been a problem forever.  I don't want to blank my devices and sync them.  I just want to move files between them.  It is a huge pain in a** that you can't just drag files around.
I have music from before ipods.  It was put on an pc years ago that used to be linked to my current ipad2.  All of my music is on the ipad2.  that old pc has been reformatted and is now used as a workstation with only a few programs on it.  I now have a new pc.  I want my music on this pc.  why am i not allowed to do this through itunes?  why does syncing not take files on my ipad that aren't on my pc?  why must i erase all of my data on the device in order to sync with itunes that has no data to sync?
All of the music i have purchased through itunes is fine.  all of the apps are fine.  what possible reason could there be for me not being permitted to take things that i own and put them on other things that i own?
I also have a new 5s.  Why must i also erase this to put one friggin playlist on it?
Could i do this using an external hardrive? maybe.  in an incredibly and overly laborious way.  when the friggin files are right there.  when i can look at them, and even play them through my pc from my ipad, but moving them over so i can put them on my phone....  **** no.  the world would explode then.
The sync options should have a choice of putting all the combined data from both devices on both devices.  I have absolutely no understanding of why in the year 2013 this is still a problem.
Most likely for the 10 trillionth time on this forum, how do i do this?

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
While I agree that it would be nice if it was easier to transfer media from your Apple devices they should never be used as the sole location for any of your media. They are too easily lost, stolen, damaged, or corrupted. The user tip above also includes a link to a suggested library backup strategy so that you can avoid being in the same position in future.

  • How do I use an external monitor with my MacBook??

    Hi,
I recently purchased my MacBook, but when I am at home, I want to be able to use my MacBook like a normal computer, by plugging a keyboard, mouse and my existing LCD monitor to it.
What do I need to purchase to enable this and what system settings do I need to adjust to get my monitor to work?
Could I have my laptop closed while i am using my external monitor? How do I do this? I don't want my MacBook open, while I am using my monitor!! Can someone please give me a simple step by step guide on how to turn on and use my laptop which my external monitor plugged in.
Thank you very much for your help.

  • External HardDrive - Powermac to Macbook

I'm buying a macbook in the coming weeks. I have a PowerMac G5 with an external harddrive - usb connection. I have all my files on there and will be transferring the ones i have on my boot drive to it when i get the macbook. will i have any problems getting the files off of the drive once i connect it to my macbook?

You shouldn't have any problems at all. Both systems are Macs. As long as you don't move software directly over, then you're fine.

  • Moving library between macbook pro using an external harddrive

I have been trying to move my aperture 3.0 library from one macbook pro to new laptop pro. I can move the library to an external network harddrive but i can't navigate to the library on the harddrive due to permissions. I have not been able to figure out how to change the permissions. I have also tried using the firewire mode on the old laptop but that hasn't worked. The library is large ~12 gig.
What is the best way to move the library? I want to use the new laptop to work on the photos so that I can delete the library from the old laptop.

Personally I would change the ownership of recursively through the whole library to the account that you using on the new computer - you should be able to do that in the terminal shell with chown -R. You can also try the finder and set both the volume and files are set to new owner in the info window (gear box all the way at the bottom)

  • Best way to use multiple external harddrives?

    Hey everyone
I want to ideally have a setup where I have 3-4 Harddrives attached to my macbook (1 firewire powered, the rest independently powered), but am nervous about power distribution and data transfer rates. Is there any sort of hub or external box that can help manage these drives better? I've heard that daisy chaining multiple drives is not a good idea.
    Thanks

Well daisy chain firewire device is a lot more easier than back in the day you have to configure terminator and tiny jumper set up on each HD for specific SCSI ID.
So far I have daisy chained 3 device using fire wire :
macbook - external Lacie HD - external lightscribe DL dvd burner - Sony TRV camcorder, and no problem until now.
You can give firewire Hub a shot, but make sure it has its own power adapter for the power provided from macbook firewire port might not enough for fire that hub up.
Here is one of the unique hub that I wish to have if it comes in black like my macbook.:

  • How do I use my external harddrive with FCPX?

So I have 1 TB external hard drive and want to back up my movie and media files using the hard drive so I don't take up a ton of space on my internal HD.
How do I do it so it doesn't save onto my computer, and only my hard drive. Final Cut pro uses up a lot of memory when I try to make videos.

In FCPX, in the menu-bar is 'Help', which should you link to the Manual.
Be sure, you get the actual one for your version of FCPX ..
    Glad to helpful!
