I challenge you - this is bizarre

I have a time capsule configured for 802.11n (5Ghz frequency) connecting to an Airport Express (802.11n) which attaches a macmini via the ethernet port. When I stream an MP4 from the Time Capsule to the macmini, I get pretty frequent freezes / pauses in the playback. However, I also have a macbook pro connected to this same 802.11n network and when I share the desktop with the macmini (which is running the video through Front Row) the playback on the macmini becomes perfectly smooth! If you have any ideas on what this could be, I'd be both appreciative and in awe of your knowledge of technical quirks.

Well, for anyone interested, I figured this out. Rather than look at the wireless as the cause, I focused on the media. After updating the divx codec to the latest version, it fixed things completely. Now everything runs sweet. If anyone is having similar choppy playback problems, it might be a good place to start.

because you this loading firefox.exe like process from the beginning of the computer with a load from 38 to 42000 kb or like I can solve this problem, atualmente when lighting the computer among the processes that are loaded when beginning the computer is a process of name firefox.exe with a load of between 30 and 50000 kb but I don't find to the registered firefox inside the programs to crgar from the beginning when entering for msconfig.exe my operating system is so far windows xp up-to-date sp3 and my firefox is 7.0.1 version in Spanish that is my native language.

That seems very suspicious. Two suggestions.
First, try Firefox's Safe Mode. This will let you work around problems with add-ons and perhaps help you identify things to remove so that Firefox goes back to normal.
I recommend making a backup of your Firefox settings before starting in Safe Mode. To back up Firefox, see [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information].
Next, try starting Firefox in Firefox
[http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode Safe Mode]. Be careful not to "reset" anything permanently if you didn't back up.
Does that work? If so, you may need to disable your add-ons and just bring the most essential ones back to life until you discover the problem one.
Second thought: malware. You could supplement your usual security scans with these:
    Malwarebytes Anti-malware : http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
    SUPERAntiSpyware : http://www.superantispyware.com/
    HouseCall : http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    Hope this helps.

    Hi elishia,
Just thought you might want to know - you cannot reset your own security questions. If you forget them, then you either have to have an Email Authentication code sent to your Rescue email address (if you have one), or you have to contact iTunes Support as Diavonex has indicated above.

  • Has anyone ever heard of this problem before?  I challenge you!

So guys, recent macbook pro that I purchased - 15inch - intel core 2 duo 2.4 ghz. It's been great. Recently, I had noticed that when the computer was running off the battery - the time indicator for the battery life kept changing drastically like 2:30 to 4:40 etc.
I went and sought the advice of a mac genius at the local apple store. They found that some kernel issue, something software related, was spiking in the activity monitor thereby causing the battery to have to re-evaluate how much time is left rapidly. they said there was nothing wrong with my battery and that I should do an archive and install and see what happens. they also told me they had NEVER heard of this before - which seems impossible - someone has to have experienced this.
anyways, did the archive and install and when that was completed and my computer was 10.4.9 the problem was fixed! time was back to normal.
then mindlessly, i went through the required software updates to get me up to speed and then tried the battery again just to make sure if was working - and suddenly it was back to old problem again. So it must be some apple software update that I downloaded? And if it is, somebody must have heard of this before.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Jack

As I understand it--and this is surely what Retired Engineer was alluding to--your Mac looks at the current battery drainage, combines that with the amount of power in the battery (x%) and computes how much battery time is left. This is why, for example, when you first unplug the computer, the display says "computing" instead of "x:xx time left". But how much power your Mac uses depends on what you are doing. For example, if you let the computer sit, it uses almost no power, and so the computer will show several hours remaining. However, if you then decide to use Disk Utility to "verify disk" or "repair permissions" or something, then suddenly the computer will start spinning and reading the disk, which is rather power intensive, and also it will have to do some computing, which is also power intensive. So display of the amount of time left will drop massively, accordingly, because your Mac battery won't last nearly as long with this amount of usage. But once Disk Utility is done, and the computer is doing nothing again, then your computer will recompute the amount of battery left back to a higher time. And so on.
As a general rule, the more apps you have running, the more disk activity your are doing, and the more services you have on (e.g. wireless) the less battery time you will have.
Rosetta translates on-the-fly programs written for PPC processors, used on older Macs, to something that can run on an Intel Mac like the Macbook Pro. This is computationally intensive and so will slow things down. If you look at Apple > About this Mac > More Details > Software you will see what of your applications are Intel or Universal, and therefore running natively (not Rosetta) or PPC (Rosetta). This information may also appear in Activity Monitor. And make sure you have set activity monitor to show all processes, not just yours.

  • SQL challenge: avoid this self-join!!!

Here's something of a challenging SQL problem. I'm trying to persist an arbitrary number of attributes for an object. I am trying to do this in a regular relational table both for performance and to make future upgrades easier.
The problem is that I don't know what SQL cleverness I can use to only scan the ATTR table once.
Does Oracle (or for that matter the SQL standard) have some way to help me? Here's a simplified example:
Consider a table ATTR with columns OID, ATTR_ID, ATTR_VAL. Unique key is OID, ATTR_ID. Assume any other indexes that you want, but be aware that ATTR_VAL is modestly dynamic.
I can easily look for a OID for any one ATTR_ID, ATTR_VAL pair:
    SELECT oid FROM attr
    WHERE attr_id = 1 AND attr_val = :b1
I can also easily do this looking at multiple attributes when I only need one condition to be met with an OR, as:
    SELECT DISTINCT oid FROM attr
    WHERE (attr_id = 1 AND attr_val = :b1)
    OR (attr_id = 31 AND attr_val = :b2)
But how to handle the condition where I want to have the two ATTR_ID, ATTR_VAL pairs "and-ed" together? I know that I can do this:
    SELECT oid FROM
    (SELECT oid FROM attr WHERE attr_id = 1 AND attr_val = :b1)
    UNION
    (SELECT oid FROM attr WHERE attr_id = 31 AND attr_val = :b2)
But this will necessitate looking at ATTR twice. This is maybe okay if there are only two conditions, but what about when there might be 10 or even 50? At some point this technique becomes unacceptable.
    Clearly:
    SELECT DISTINCT oid FROM attr
    WHERE (attr_id = 1 AND attr_val = :b1)
    AND (attr_id = 31 AND attr_val = :b2)
won't work (each row has but one ATTR_ID).
The following will end up doing the same basic thing as the UNION (it avoids a sort so is preferable):
SELECT oid FROM attr a1, attr a2
    WHERE a1.oid = a2.oid
    AND (a1.attr_id = 1 AND a1.attr_val = :b1)
    AND (a2.attr_id = 31 AND a2.attr_val = :b2)
but the fundamental problem of scanning ATTR twice remains.
What cleverness can I apply here to only scan ATTR once?
    Thanks,
    :-Phil

  • I updated to the newest version of FIREFOX and now my NETFLIX won't play, YOUTUBE videos will not play. I was one of the people that donated to you this year.

Hello Mozilla/FIREFOX I just updated to your latest version and now my NETFLIX nor my YOUTUBE plays anymore. I just get a black space without any volume or play symbols - this isn't working for me. I donated to your organization as I am a supporter but you'll need to honor your side of the street. What are you guys doing to fix this and by when will it be resolved?

    Hello,
The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.
'''''Note:''' When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences.'' See the [[Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings]] article for more information.
    To Refresh Firefox:
    # Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
#*Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Troubleshooting Information''. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
#*If you're unable to access the Help menu, type '''about:support''' in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
#At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
#Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
#Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.
Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • Urgent Tricky problem... I challenge you all....

I'm working on a very cool freeware Java text editor, that is working beautifully, except for the code used to change the color of reserved words, etc, on the fly...
At the moment, I use a documentlistener. When text is inserted, I need to color some of that text automatically. However, when I try to call setCharacterAttributes in DefaultStyledDocument, it causes a runtime exception, Illegal State Exception (Attempt to mutate in notification)>
I understand how this exception is caused, but how do I get around it?

    Hi,
You'll need to modify the color after your DocumentListener event handling is finished.
    SwingUtilities.invokeLater( new Runnable() {
      public void run() {
        //setCharacterAttributes ...
});Then the change is done when the document is no longer locked.
    Hope this helps,
    Kurt.

  • This is bizarre. Something appears to be eating my computer.

Yesterday I went to my computer and found some kind of dust all around the base of the machine. It looks like dandruff. I wiped it down only to find that today it is back. See the photo below:
If you look closely you can see that there is lots of the detritus on the stand itself, though the bit that has landed on top of the brown cabinet surface is the easiest to see.  The "dandruff" seems to be heaviest just below the vent holes on the back of the computer.  Are there batteries there that could be leaking acid? The machine is almost never turned off -- is  that part of the issue somehow? Are there some kind of blue meanies that will eat the equipment from the inside???? There has been no work going on with the adjacent walls or ceiling, so it's not construction related.  It's just this one area that seems to have this.  This is too weird.  Any ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    steve

No, nor have I ever seen anything that suggested it need be cleaned.  While I can (and did) vacuum the vent holes to the point that it appears they are clean, there is no way that I can see to clear out the insides or to know if anything other than the vent holes themselves are clean.  In any event, thanks.

I wouldn't touch the Philips one with a bargepole. My brother has one. The menus are sluggish, your music can vanish without warning (it shows up in Windows Media Player but not on the player itself) so you end up retransferring EVERYTHING and the photo quality is terrible. Please avoid.

  • UNLOCKABLE BlackBerry Z30 - I challenge you!

    Good evening,
I own a BlackBerry Z30, but not just any bbz30:
    - I bought it off of kijiji last week, the device appears to be very new.
    - It works with Telus's network proven by inserting their simcard.
    - It has Telus written on the side of the box
    BUT
    - Telus doesn't have the device listed or recognized in their past inventory or database.
    - NO BODY can find me the unlock code, and I am assuming this is why; I have tried two thirdparty unlocking companies.
    - HOWEVER, the device has a valid PIN recognized by Telus (becuase they see that BlackBerry also recognizes it as a real device, by this ID)
I am bloody well frusturated with this whole ordeal. Got myself a nice $600 paper weight because I can't unlock the device to work on my network (WIND Mobile), and yes, as a STA 100-5 I am certain unlocking it will work on wind.
Somewhere along the line, BlackBerry made this phone, marked it with their ID, and then it never got into the Telus database/system.  My request is that someone from BlackBerry help provide me the unlock code as they are the only ones who might be able to at this point.  I am willing to pay a reasonable sum; please stop hiding!
    Don't dissapoint another customer!

they should be able to unlock it
