Apple IDs never go away, so it still exists.
But lets be clear. You actually stopped using an Apple ID and created a NEW Apple ID. You didn't just change the email address of your Apple ID? That means that all of the music and apps purchased with the old Apple ID will have to be purchased again.
If you really did create a new Apple ID you will need the password associated with the old one to disable Activation Lock. There is no way around this. As I said, the old one still exists. You can use the standard tools to recover the password at https://appleid.apple.com.

Are you referring to updating the iOS? Software update for the phone has nothing to do with downloading apps. The only time the OTA software update for the phone iOS was after iOS 5. If you are looking to update applications, then go to the App store and select updates.

Borrow a monitor from a friend or neighbor. If you update it on a machine other than the one you normally sync with, the music will be lost until you can set it back up to sync with the original iTunes library (or a new library that contains your music).

so I bought a new Iphone and I've had Itunes on my computer for years but the email i used when setting up my original account no longers exists. So I have no way of acessing it. When I bought my phone i put in my current email and I verified it. I can't have my old library with the new email and when i tried to change it i got the message that the email was registered to another I.D Which of course is the one with the phone. How can i join them so i have my music and changed my id?

To update your phone requires using the latest version of iTunes, on your computer, as well as Internet access. The update to iOS 5.0 or higher is an erase/restore deal, so you not only have to make sure all of the content, currently on your phone, is on your computer and accessible, you need to update iTunes first, have Internet access, then update your phone. There is no way around this fact. You could go to an Apple store or use another computer, but you run the risk of losing all of your data it you do that.

I am stuck with a similar problem. I moved from Ireland to the UK but for some reason, iTunes would not let me change the country in my payment information, it remains Ireland. I do not have any credit to spend and I still cannot change it. I even set up a new iTunes account and the country still remains uncangable. Hence, I cannot add the details of my UK card as iTunes believes it is set in Ireland. Have you managed to solve your problem?

Apps can only be updated by the Apple ID used to buy them. Apple does not transfer content from one ID to another.Apple does not merge IDs. Unless you want to buy the app with the new Apple ID, you need to recover the old ID. -
Hi, I have the same apple id for my 5s and my two daughters 4s phones. For some reason lately, their updated for apps on their phones will not download. Mine works fine. When I press "update" on theirs, it just opens whatever particular app I'm trying to update. I've tried restarting their phones and signing out and signing back in to my account, but no luck. Any ideas? Any help would be appriciated.
You got the new iphone????? I have same problem. I transferred audiobooks to device to find no audiobooks on device (despite it being in iTunes as if it was). Have you found a solution????? I even tried to change import settings on format transfer but hasn't worked.

Other than that each of you should use your own Apple ID for iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud, Game Center, etc.
