I check the box to "Remember the password for sites" and the check keeps disappearing.

I check the box to "Remember the password for sites" and the check keeps disappearing. Each time I open the Security page in Options the check box is clear. I'd like it to stay checked.

No. It's a safety feature. Select the appropriate response and the next time you visit, you won't be prompted.

To prevent others from reading your mail, don't give them access to your account. If others need to use your computer for some reason, set up personal accounts, or a guest account, and switch to it before allowing them access. This is the simplest, and most effective, method.
Email message files can be read as plain text in TextEdit or any word processor.
To protect your email messages from being viewed by others while in your account, you would have to lock the folder, putting it into an encrypted disk image that required a password to be opened and mounted. You would have to double-click on the image and give your password to mount it before launching Mail then unmount it as soon as you're done. My guess is that you could replace the ~/Library/Mail folder with an alias pointing to the folder on the disk image.
It may work, but it seems like a lot of unnecessary hassle.

  • Toggling Password for Screensaver and the time when this setting gets valid

    hi,
i have a small snippet which checks the setting for the password of the screensaver and toggles it
If i check the setting in sys-prefs my code seems to work
    -- check setting
set output to do shell script "defaults -currentHost read com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -int"
    if output is "0" then
do shell script "defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -int 1"
    -- other case
    else
do shell script "defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -int 0"
    end if
But if i start the screensaver it starts getting strange. Sometimes the setting is set and
My feeling tells me it could be related with the time it needs that the password-check checks triggered AFTER the screensaver is started.
IIRC there is a time-value it needs after starting the screensaver (if the pw-set is enabled) before it gets active to prevent the user from a direct pw-dialog. May that cause my strange problem.
Or is my change just entirely ignored ?
Or am i doing something wrong with my code itself ?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Best regards
    fidel

    hi,
    thanks for your reply.
Great so see someone realized similar problems.
Regarding your code i dislike that it results in a password-dialog while executing.
The setting itself in System-Preferences is changeable in 10.5 without being administrator or even entering any user credentials.
Better then nothing, but somehow not perfect.
In addition i would like to understand why my attempt above does change the settings visualized in System-Preferences but doenst does what i expect =)
Lets see if someone else has additional ideas - i keep your snippet in mind as i can learn from it anyways =)
    Best regards
    fidel
edit: well a second look always helps - your idea needs admin privileges as you configure all security settings not only the screensaver pw option.
gonna do some tests with a reduced setup.
    thanks again

  • Firefox will NOT remember passwords although I've checked the "Remember Passwords for Sites" option.

The question is just as I posed it - Firefox forgets to keep the passwords for sites, even after I'm prompted to do so each time a site is opened.

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?

It's in your Keychain on the computer you usually use to connect to your network - the "kind" will be "AirPort Network Password".
Your Keychain can be opened by using the Keychain Access program. It is in your Utilities Folder.
Open Keychain Access, and type airport in the search field. You will see a number of entries. Choose the one with the name of your wireless network, open it, and check the box next to "show password". Before it reveals itself you will be asked for your login password - the one you use to log in to your MacBook.
The network password will appear in the box.
    Quit Keychain Access.

  • HT201240 hi all. i just downloaded mountain lion and it seems to have added an old password for admin at the start up, the old password was removed so all i had to do was press enter and off i go, i cant remember it, what to do now??

hi all. i just downloaded mountain lion and it seems to have added an old password for admin at the start up, the old password was removed so all i had to do was press enter and off i go, i cant remember it, what to do now??

    Eli,
You can reset a Password (lost/forgotten) set on your Mac using 'Reset Password Utility' available with OS X Utilities tool. With OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Utilities tool can be generally found on a local hidden Recovery HD Partition if your Mac has one.
To check If your Mac has got a local hidden Recovery HD Partition, start your Mac holding COMMAND + R buttons. If you hold the keys pressed enough and there is a local Recovery HD Partition on your Mac, you will be presented with OS X Utilities window.
Click the 'Tool' menu item and choose 'Reset password'. Terminal window appears. Type 'resetpassword' into it and press 'Enter'. Reset Password window appears with User Account Names available on your Start-up Volume. Select the User Account Name and rest is simple to follow.
One of the advantages of this method is that it does not require any Authorization method such as administrative authentication to reset a password.
NOTE: If your Mac does not have a local hidden Recovery Partition on its system disk, you can create one using Disk Assistant application available from Apple. Search for the Disk Assistant in the support area.

  • How can I get Firefox to remember a password for a site I originally told it not to? The site is not found in the exceptions area of passwords either.

I initially said for Firefox to NOT remember a password for COZI.com, my online calendar site. Now I would like it to, but cannot find a place to make that happen. I checked under TOOLS/OPTIONS/SECURITY/PASSWORDS. The site is not listed under exceptions either. Is there a way to make this happen?

I do not see that form in the page source, so it looks that it the login form gets created via JavaScript and the Firefox Password Manager doesn't work in such cases. Form fill may store the name.

  • Ive got a Mac Pro bought seconf hand, It doesn't allow me to update as the username is blocked to the previous owner, it appears off and can't change it, the box goes directly to password. I have changed the computer username and password but the problem

Ive got a Mac Pro 2010, bought second hand through eBay. When it comes to update the software, the username is blocked to the previous owner. It appears off and the box goes directly to password. I have tried to reset then to log in in apple store with my login but didn't help. I would appreciate any tips to sort it out
    Thanks fellas

That machine did not ship with Mountain Lion (Mac OS X 10.8), so that means the copy of Mountain Lion on the machine was purchased by the former owner and is non-transferable. It is permanently linked to his/her Apple ID, so you cannot update or reinstall it.
What you need to do (which the seller should have done for you) is reinstall the original system that that machine came with. I believe that would be Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). What you need to do is reinstall that system from the original disks. If the seller did not provide those disks, you can call Apple and get them replaced for a small shipping and handling fee.

Open Applications and the the Utility folder and then Keychain Access app. In there you will find all the usernames and password that have been saved. For some reason it is not saving those passwords and or not using the ones that have been saved.
This is fairly common with Mac OS X as it happens for no apparent reason just all of a sudden.

For some reason or other I can't remember my password for my apple id and when I go to reset it I can't find the email they have sent me.I think they are sending it to my apple email [email protected] which I can't access as they are telling me my password is wrong and send me an email message to this email address which I cannot remember the password for. I am in a vicious circle.Support have emailed me and stated they can't change it?!

Sign in at http://icloud.com with the new ID and password and confirm that your data is still all there.
Then sign out in System Preferences>iCloud then sign back in with the new ID and password. Your data will disappear from your Mac when you sign out, but will reappear when you sign back in.
