I closed my tabs. I closed my pictures. I closed Firefox. They came back.

OS: Windows 7, Firefox: newly updated 22.0 (Thanks a lot :( ).
I opened a bunch of pictures off Ancestry.com, and they all opened in a separate windows. Four times now, I've opened firefox. CLOSED ALL TABS, closed Firefox. Then, when I reopen FIrefox, all of those pictures are reopened.
How do I close the tabs? I don't want zombie tabs that always rise from the dead. When I'm done with them, I don't want them open again. It takes a long time to open up all these pictures. It's a PAIN.
I don't like the new release.

Hello,
Please try the following:
* Check that Firefox is not configured to [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/restore-previous-session#w_configuring-session-restore always restore tabs from last time].
* Check that the unwanted tabs are not [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/pinned-tabs-keep-favorite-websites-open pinned as 'app tabs']
* Check that the unwanted pages are not [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/How%20to%20set%20the%20home%20page#w_set-more-than-one-website-as-your-home-page set as your home pages]
If none of these helps then please try starting Firefox in [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode?esab=a&s=safe+mode&r=1&as=s Safe Mode]. This will test whether any installed add-ons are causing the issue. If it works fine in Safe Mode then you should follow the safe mode instructions and disable all your add-ons. Then re-enable them one by one testing as you go.
I hope that helps. Let me know if not.

  • How can I make the tabs go away? Every time I reopen, they are back!

OK--Right now, the tabs are stuck from the day I set up my new iMac. One is stuck on Google search my home page opener, and it always says what the **** because my daughter typed that when the iMac insisted it couldn't find the wireless keyboard after she had just typed the number code using it, and then that message on Google; then it shows Betty Crocker, then a local restaurant, then a neighborhood page on FaceBook. Only then does it add tabs for tjhings I look up or select from email. WHY? It used to erase all tabs. Now, Firefox asks if I want to close, and I say YES, not SAVE. But there they are, over and over, even when I Quit Firefox and wait overnight! I can't find anything under Preferences that will get me back to Zero again. I want all blank tabs

If you are not on Windows then instead of Tools > Options use:
    *Linux: Edit > Preferences
    *Mac: Firefox > Preferences
*Windows: Firefox > Options or Tools > Options
It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • My App Tabs aren't saving when I close Firefox, they're gone when I re-open. Anyone know why this might be happening?

Just downloaded Firefox 5 and love the App Tabs concept. I right click, Pin as App Tab, then close Firefox. When I re-open it, there aren't any pinned App Tabs.

App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data in the file sessionstore.js in the Firefox profile folder.

Make sure that you do not use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the "Browsing History" when Firefox is closed because that prevails and prevents Firefox from opening tabs from the previous session.

When closing Firefox windows, I would like a warning before the last window closes. The about:config settings do nothing. There is a warning for multiple tabs... why not for the last window? I do not use tabs... just windows... I have a mouse button programmed for that. It is really irritating to have to restart Firefox all the time and then open the history window because no warning was issued!

This is ridiculous. I've had this problems for years now and I'm finally walking away from Firefox. I use my keyboards more than my mouse, and how many times does your finger slip and hit Command Q instead of W. How come FF can't reset something as trivial as this? So many people are having problems with this?
Feels like FF has become too big, too slow and just not cooperative anymore. What a shame, I've been using Netscape/Firefox for 13 years. This is silly.

When closing Firefox, after reopening it, my tabs are gone, even though I have Firefox set to remember session. However, after several hours and opening and closings of Firefox, it will open tabs from the old session, for no apparent reason.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • Before, when i closed Firefox with multiple tabs open, it prompted me and asked if I wanted to return to these tabs the next time. When i downloaded the new Firefox, i can't do that anymore. Is there an add-on to make that happen?

I recently updated Firefox on my desktop and laptop. Before, when i closed Firefox, a window would open and ask me if i wanted to return to the same group of URL location tabs the next time i opened Firefox.
Now it doesn't ask that, so i have to remember which sites i was using each time. Is there a way to return to the same group of URL locations each time I re-open Firefox?

  • Sessionrestore occasionally does not show my tabs as they were when I closed Firefox, but as they were some time before I closed it.

Occasionally Sessionrestore doesn't show my tabs as they were when I closed Firefox, but as they were at some seemingly random (but persistent if trying again) point between starting and ending my previous session. Occasionally they're exactly as they were when I started my last session. I'm currently using Firefox 5, but the problem was already present when I was still using 4. Perhaps it's also relevant that I tend to have lots of windows and tabs open, sometimes to the point of crashing Firefox.

I've increased my window limit to five too, though I'm unsure if I understand it's function correctly, I've reloaded more then three windows through session restore in the past. Anyway, that didn't have an effect. I haven't used app tabs at all yet, so I doubt that could be the problem. As for closing down Firefox correctly, the problem seems to persist regardless of how Firefox closes, be it a crash, killing it in task manager, or through file>exit. I forgot to mention this earlier, but I've monitored sessionstore.js, and it seems like that file literally stops being modified at some point, regardless if I keep browsing. If there's a way that I could "reliably duplicate" the process, I'd love to help, just say what I should do. It's been happening pretty much every browsing session lately, it seems that if I just browse for a decent while it's bound to happen.

  • How to make close last tab actually open SuperStart rather then closing Firefox?

Is there a way to make Firefox (or SuperStart) NOT close Firefox when the last tab is closed? I'd prefer for it to act like Opera in that it would make the SuperStart tab page appear instead. This way I have to choose to close Firefox by actually closing Firefox (such as clcking the red "x" in the corner of Firefox, etc).
Just because I don't want the last tab open does NOT mean I want to close my browser.
As a result of this current behavior, when I reopen Firefox I end up with that last tab showing up again, which of course I don't want either.

Also make SuperStart your home page.

Clicking on Microsoft Update opened Firefox, but Microsoft Update couldn't run from Firefox; when I closed Firefox I lost all my tabs and couldn't restore anything but the Microsoft page; how can I restore the tabs from an earlier session?

    Hi Diovizor,
Make sure that you do not use [http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Clear%20Recent%20History Clear Recent History] to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox.
Also please make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode.
You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: Use custome settings for history. Uncheck "Always use permanent Private Browsing mode"
    Hope that helps!

    Firefox V30.0
I saw a poss solution to my prob of loosing tab groups when closing firefox It read ". Edit > Preferences > Privacy "I can't find references under the edit menu" so cannot attempt the fix offered?

Your System Details list shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there.
You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: Open with) if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
