I continue to get a message stating "This version of Safari is no longer supported.  Please upgrade to a supported browser."  How do I do that?

I'll start by saying I;m not real computer smart.  I need layman's terms.
I've been having issues completing transactions via Safari and based on the info I've gathered it has to do with my "no longer supported" version of Safari.  I get a statement saying "This version of Safari is no longer supported.  Please upgrade to a supported browser."  I have an iMac 3.06 GHz processor with 4 GB memory with OS X v10.6.8.
I understand I need to upgrade my Safari V5.1.10 but how do I do that?  When I click software update it says I'm updated.  Every time I do a search for Safari updates I get info for OS X & Yosemite.  However, I don't understand what exactly that is.  Just want a version of Safari that works.  Appreciate the patience of anyone that is willing to help.

Hi
The version you using is not that old, but the upgrade is immediately required.
Here are few available options.
1) How to upgrade OS
http://www.apple.com/in/osx/how-to-upgrade/
2)
Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
    OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
     Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
3) If you are working and used to using some older applications on your computer, updating to Yosemite will create so many problems. Some of your older applications will not work anymore and you will have to upgrade them too. This = $$$$ . Maybe it will be cheaper to buy a new computer
Install Google Chrome or Opera Browser for free.

Google seem to have decided in the last week or so that Safari 5.x, which is the newest Safari version available for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is "not supported" any more, even though there are many reasons for staying with these OS X versions.
Try this (at your own risk, but it works for me), as it seems to remove the message by tricking Gmail into thinking your Safari version is newer:
    -- Quit Safari
-- Locate the following file (location depends on your OS X version):
    OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit2.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Info.pl ist
OS X 10.5 Leopard and older:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Info.plist
-- Drag the file to your Mac's desktop to make a copy. Also make a safe copy somewhere else eg your Documents folder, as if you lose or mess up the file Safari will not launch at all. Having a backup browser is also recommended.
-- Double-click it to open it in TextEdit
-- Locate the CFBundleVersion value (the last line in the file that has numbers in it) and increment the second digit of it to the required version of Safari e.g. Safari 6 now seems to be the minimum version that Google support so change the second number from 5 to 6 (don't change anything else, only the change the second number). The value is different depending on your OS X version but as an example, for Snow Leopard 6534.59.10 becomes 6634.59.10
-- Drag the file back from the desktop to its original location, choose the option to replace the old version, and enter your password when prompted.
-- Run a permissions repair in Disk Utility to set the permissions in the file back to what they should be (not required, but good practice).
-- Launch Safari and test Gmail.

  • Sion of This version of Safari is no longer supported. Please upgrade to a supported browser. I have am iMac v. 10.6.8. What now?

Browser: Safari, v. 5.1.10 Problem: Gmail posts a message that the version of Safari I have is no longer supported and to upgrade to a supported browser. When I attempted to update/upgrade, my system says there are no new updates. What is the best browser to use? I'm new at this stuff and totally lost.

You need to either upgrade the computer's OS or switch to a browser such as Firefox or Chrome.
To upgrade, open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • A banner on gmail says this "This version of Safari is no longer supported. Please upgrade to a supported browser. Dismiss" what to do?

I'm not very tech savvy so please type replies in very easy language.
I use safari as my browser.  Just updated my Apple software for my macbook Mac OS X version 10.6.8 (whatever that means)   This banner recently appeared. When I clicked to see what browsers were supported - well hey there was safari!   and an odd note that said if your browser is mentioned here then you probably have "browser extensions" attached that are not reocgnised so basically - go deal with them and you will be fine.
After a bit of internet hunting found out what a browser extension is - only have one and it has been working fine until just now - deleted it anyway bit that action has made no difference so now stuck.
    Any ideas anyone?

Simplest way to test out new versions of Mac OSX is to partition your main hard drive so that you have an extra partition to install any new OS to for testing purposes.
For example I prefer to use through choice on my iMacs - OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and I have their HD's partitioned as follows...
    1 TB HardDrive...
    Partition 1: 150GB for OSX 10.6 + Applications
Partition 2: 150GB for OSX 10.6 + Applications back up
Partition 3: 100GB for Installing & testing new versions of Mac OS
Partition 4: 600GB for Storage of all data (Movies, Music, Pics etc...)
I've found this to be the best way to run a Mac for ease of use, easy & simple restoration & backup of your OS partition & for the simplest and quickest way for testing out new versions of Mac OS before you decide whether they are suitable and work for you.
It's also very handy for keeping a current backup of your OS available for when you install an update to some software only to find out it doesn't work or is bugged and you want to got back to your known working set up as it was before you installed the updated software (something that I find happens quite often with bug ridden software updates)...
With the above type of set up you can easily boot into your current set up or into a new OS for easy testing and restore things easily and quickly should anything go wrong. It's much faster than using external disks but of course you should always have a complete back up of your system & data on an external disk in case the built in one ever fails... (all of course backed up quickly and safely using CCC (CarbonCopyCloner)... :-)

I have iTunes running on my Windows8 desktop for some while with no problems. Yesterday I purchased a song, deleted a free game app. and upgraded to the most current version of iTunes.  This morning I could not pull up iTunes, so I retored my iTunes to a setting two (2) days ago.  Now, as soon as I try to start iTunes I get a message stating: This version of iTunes has not been correctly localized for this language. Please run the Enclish version OK.  So I hit the OK button and nothing happens.  Please help.

    Hi there GloriaNM,
You may want to try removing and reinstalling iTunes as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the article below for more information.

Try updating using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer file downloaded from the Apple website:

  • HT1461 after partitioning and hitting continue I get a message stating that boot camp stopped unexpectedly. Can not get passed this despite several attempts.

I am attempting to install Windows 7 and have launched Boot Camp. When I get to the screen that has me partitioning, when I submit continue I receive a message stating that Boot Camp has unexpectantly stopped. My options are to cancel, reopen, or report error. I have attempted this set-up several times without success. Any suggestions are most appreciated.

Windows will not boot from USB if the Mac has an internal optical drive. This is something that Microsoft implemented.

  • None of my devices will connect to iTunes. now i get a message stating, "this iPhone could not connect to iTunes, the device is no longer connected".

About a week ago I noticed that whenever i plugged in either my iPhone 5 or iPad mini to my mac, I would get a prompt asking if it was ok to trust this computer. I never got that before. Even after selecting "trust", I still get a message from iTunes that the device will not connect. I am using an apple sync cord in could shape, connections are good. They charge fine when plugged into this cord to the mac, but will not show up in iTunes.

    Good afternoon, UnclePapa,
If iTunes is not detecting two iOS devices, try the steps below to resolve the issue.  First, I would suggest signing out of your iTunes Store account on your Mac and on your devices.  Then restart all devices, and sign in with the same Apple ID on all of them.
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for OS X - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS1591
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for OS X
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't appear under Devices in iTunes after you connect it to your Mac, refer to the troubleshooting suggestions below.
This article is for OS X. If you're using a Windows PC, see what to do if your Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows.
Follow these steps to resolve your issue:
If you haven't connected your iOS device to this computer before, unlock the device and tap Trust. Learn more about the Trust This Computer alert.
    Restart your iOS device.
    Restart your Mac.
Make sure that your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Install software updates on your Mac.
If an iTunes update is available, apply the update.
Check USB connections. iOS devices need USB 2.0 to work properly. If you're not sure your Mac has USB 2.0 ports, check the computer's specifications.
Disconnect other USB devices and connect your device directly to a USB port on your Mac.
    Try another USB cable.

That article is a bit dated.  Here is a recent post I assembled for a similar question, with more updated information:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open your data files, modify them and save them;
    4.  Install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion.  Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for only $19.99 + sales tax & shipping; call 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753).    This solution will give you concurrent use of your PowerPC applications and access to Lion or Mt. Lion.

  • Using system 10.6.8, this version of Safari 5.1.10 is no longer supported by gmail. Please upgrade to a supported browser. Updates are current. What?

I get a message in my gmail account starting two weeks ago: "This version of Safari is no longer supported. Please upgrade to asupported browser." My updates are current with Safari 5.1.10, using OS 10.6.8. No system changes have been made near that time frame. My gmail account appears to be working normally at the present time. Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core duo w/ 2GB SDRAM. Help?

To move to Safari 6 you would have to install Lion or Mountain Lion.  Perhaps try contacting Google/gmail about the issue and why they are not supporting your version of Safari.

  • HT1751 I get an error message stating  this computer is already assigned to an Apple ID and can only download every 90 days from a different Apple ID. How do I  get by this?

I had to get a new external hard drive and now would like to download  my previous purchases from ITunes . I get a message stating " this computer is already associated with an Apple ID - you can download  after 90 days. Please help as I have 3 apple ID and purchases on each which needs to be backed up to my new hard drive.

Hi Allan, thanks for that. I've already set up a log in for my wife and that is all working fine. The problem is that when she logs in and opens iTunes and trys to associate her library with her iTunes account she gets the error message "This computer is already associated with another iTunes account". Whilst this is true, the computer is associated with my iTunes account under my separate log in, which should have nothing to do with hers. If she transfers the association to her account it will lock me out of my content on my log in for 90 days - I'm trying to work out how to associate each of the log in accounts with a separate iTunes account so we can access our music independently of one another without locking each other out. Hope that makes sense!
