I copied library to a new hard drive, now iphoto won't recognize files.

I am new to iPhoto, so be gentle. My daughter uses it a lot, and now I seem to have messed up her library. We are using iPhoto 4.0.3. OS 10.4.11
I installed a new hard drive. I copied the iTunes and iPhoto libraries to the new larger hard drive. I copied the iphoto library to a designated folder (not the default folder). My daughter has now moved the photos into their default location, and advised iPhoto of where to look - User/Daughter/Pictures/iPhoto library. When she opens iPhoto her photos don't appear. When she picks a photo and drops it into iPhoto, the message appears,
"could not be imported because an unrecognizable type or file may not contain valid data."
The files are jpegs that open fine in Photoshop, Preview etc.
I did some reading and saw reference to deleting the file com.apple.iphoto.plist. Tried that, no success.
I would appreciate your assistance. Like I say, I don't know iPhoto at all. As a second question, I have a G4 with a dual 1.8 processor, what version of iPhoto/iLife should I be looking to upgrade to?
Thanks for your help.

"could not be imported because an unrecognizable type or file may not contain valid data."
That is the standard error you get when you try to import a photo that already resides inside the iPhoto Library folder. It prevents duplication in your library.
It sounds like you followed the correct procedure, but let's double-check. iPhoto can be run from a location other than the default. When you moved the library, did you copy the whole iPhoto Library folder as one intact unit? How did your dtr point iPhoto to the library? The correct way is to hold down Option while launching, select "Choose (or Find) Library" then navigate to the iPhoto Library folder and Open. Is this what you/she did? If so, perhaps try again?

I am very happy with iLife '06 on my 1.4 GHz G4 mini with 1 GB RAM. You could get iLife '08 for iPhoto 7, but be aware that iMovie 7 won't load on your machine because it requires a G5 or Intel machine. I made the decision not to upgrade because I'm happy with my current performance, and I think that the video-intensive and RAM-hog iPhoto 7 would bog down my mini. You can still buy iLife '06 from Amazon.com. See the system requirements:

  • New hard drive and ITunes won't recognize my IPod

Hi, I recently had to replace my hard drive. I had to download Itunes again. While trying to upload the songs from my IPod, the Itunes application tells me that my ipod belongs to another library and my only option is to sync the library with my ipod (erasing all my songs from my ipod) or upload all "purchased" Itunes from my ipod (which are only about 10 songs!). How do I make it so my library recognizes my ipod as its own and not "another"?
    Thanks.

Only the purchased iTunes songs can be copied from the iPod to iTunes - Unless you find some iPod hack program to access your iPod's library.
The best way to make sure you don't lose your songs on your iPod is to manually update your iPod.
    Loading songs onto iPod manually
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/7.1/en/2580.html
This setting allows you to drag & drop songs from your library to your iPod and won't ask you the "sync the library" question. You will have to manually eject your iPod before disconnecting it.

My external Lacie Hard drive that contains the IPhoto library is a "locked volume."  Wow, now it is suddenly letting me copy it. I dragged the library's icon to the new destination (a 3T hard drive) and it is working so far.
I have also had problems copying my IMovie events from this drive, whose data I'm trying to save.  It reaches a certain video and stops.  I will delete that video and try again.

i just saved my iphoto original library to my external hard drive, now how do i create new space on my hard drive and create a new iphoto library

Trash the copy of the library you just moved. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
But do you want to have two iPhoto Libraries? Why not just use the one on the External?

  • Moved library to new hard drive, now nothing shows in iTunes

I moved my library to a new internal hard drive, but the music does not show when I start up iTunes. I followed the instructions from the Apple website, so I don't know what to do. I can see the files on the new hard drive, so I know they are still around. I'm afraid to sync as I may lose everything. What do I do?

First - re-read all the instructions and figure out where you might have dropped a step. Below are three similar sites that explain the same process. One may help you diagnose what went wrong.
My guess is that you moved or corrupted your Library database file in the process. But without more information, I am just taking a shot in the dark.

Yes, it can. Launch iTunes with the Option key held down and navigate to that instance of the library.

  • Replaced hard drive and now iPhoto won't recognize camera

I have been using iPhoto 4.0 with my Nikon Coolpix 775 for years with great success. My hard drive needed replacing and I have lost so, so much. Now iPhoto won't recognize my camera, and I can't import. Also, it won't import the hundreds of photos I had backed up on my external drive. "Don't contain valid information" or whatever that message is. I just got a download of Nikon View 6.2.1 on the manuf. website, but that didn't seem to help. What setting am I supposed to change?
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   iPhoto 4.0.3

Sounds like you're describing two problems...
    1. iPhoto won't recognize my camera, and I can't import -- Open iPhoto Help and search on the word "camera". Seems like about the fourth item returned to tell you how to have iPhoto open when you connect your camera. If you have not imported any pictures to this library yet, then solve problem 2 before tackling this issue (so you don't have to contend with combining two photo libraries).
    2. it won't import the hundreds of photos I had backed up on my external drive -- most likely cause is that the external drive is not formatted as a "Mac OS Extended" drive. If you backed up by copying the iPhoto Library folder in its entirety, you might try just dragging it back into your Pictures folder (you may need to rename the existing iPhoto Library first if there's one already there with pictures you treasure). After the move, try starting iPhoto and see if it opens to the photos you had backed up.
If that doesn't work, come back and we'll go to plan "B".

  • New Hard Drive-Recovering iphoto library folder

I recently received a new hard drive after a crash. My photos were recovered and are in a Recovered Files folder on the new drive. How do I get the iPhoto Library folder (or the entire pictures folder) transfered to the iphoto application on the new hard drive?
BTW, I am not really sure that I have the full iphoto application on the new hard drive. I just drug iphoto 4.0.3 from the recovered files applications folder into the new applications folder. It won't stay in the dock but does open from the applications folder. It imported pictures from my camera and seems to be working fine.
Thanks for your help, this may be my first post but I do monitor the discussions regularly. Your advice is always helpful.

    sixm,
OK I better understand your situation.
1- So you say that there was no iP with the new OS 10.4. Most coomputer with 10.4 have ip5. But anyway. You did right to copy the ip4 into the app folder.
2-Now if your "shortcut" in the dock does not work anymore, then trash it. Click and drag the icon from the dock onto the desktop. You should see a puff of smoke.
3- Try to relaunch iPhoto directly from the application folder by double clicking on it. If it works, then you can re-create the alias/shortcut in the dock by dragging the icon from the appplication folder, onto the dock. Maybe the previous icon in the dock became corrupted.
The most important library with 2500 pics (approx)
I hope I understood you right that you NOW have 2 libraries in the pictures folder. iphotolibrary AND iphotolibraryold.
BTW DO NOT venture inside the ipLibrary and move any items/photos around. Iphoto will be all confused and will stop working properly
4-So you are saying that ip, right now start the iphotolibrary (with 250 pics). add a number at the end ( iphotolibrary2) this way when you start iphoto, it will not be able to find the library with 250 pic, and you will get a dialog box saying so. One of the 3 button will be "Find" the library. So click "find" and navigate to the "iphotolibraryold" and this wil point iP4 to it (the old library)
5-Hope it opens properly (if the library is intact from the transfert from HD to HD)
If it does work properly, then you can add the other 250 pics to this library within the iP application... meaning on the iP4 Window.
5.1 you can add by copying "recently scanned file that was sitting on my old desktop"
    or
2 step process. We are going to extract the 250 pics from the "iphotolibrary2".
5.2 Quit iphoto. Change the name of iphotolibraryold to iphotolibraryold3. This way iPhoto will not be able to find the old library. Launch iP, Click "find" like stated in #4 above, and now you will have iP running the iphotolibrary2 with250 pics.
5.3 create an empty folder on the desktop, and select all your pictures from iP window, and drag all the pics onto the empty folder on desktop.
5.4 quit iP4, and repeat similarly to step #4. Remove the "2" on iphotolibrary2, and when you launch iP4, again it will not be able to find it. Then point to iphotolibraryold wit the 2500 pics.
5.5 When ip is running, drag the Folder from the desktop on to iP window to copy all the 250 pics into this "old library" with 2500pics.
5.6 If all is well, (everything copied like you wanted it) at this point you can trash the folder on the desktop, AND the iphotolibrary2 from the pictures folder. Now before you empty the trash, make sure everything is working perfectly. Quit iP and re-launch to test everything, only the you can empty the trash.
Now you have a better understanding on how IP work. You can manage multiple libraries. I personally have 8 libraries. one for every 2 years of pictures. An I use an application called iPhoto buddy, that can switch from 1 library to another without having to go change the name of the library inside the pictures folder.
Hope this works. let me know how you did.
    one more thing..
as you experienced it, with a drive crash, I would suggest that you purchase and external drive, and you can make a "clone" of you internal drive. This way if you should have any problem, you can easily copy from one drive to another. HD are so cheap these days, I purchased a 120GB for $130 -70 rebate= $60 at fry's. I have suffered a drive crash 3 yrs ago, and lost a lot of pictures, videos...... It cost me $800 to retreive info on a 250GB that cost $500 back then.
Backing up onto a CD od DVD will soon become restrictive..... as your libraries become bigger than 4GB ..... with 5 or 8megapixel cameras it is not hard to go above this size with 2500 pics...
    my 2 cents

  • How do I move my Itunes library to a new hard drive????

    Hi!
I recently installed a new and bigger hard drive and wanted to move my itune library to it. Someone here said that if I do that, I will have to manually reintall each song into Itunes. Is this true? is there a way that i would move it and cause minimal effect?
    Thanks!

You might find these articles useful, you can adapt the first one to an internal drive, the method would be the same only the way the drives are connected is different:

  • Can I copy Applications to a new Hard Drive?

My PS4 is very much scraping the upper limits of it's 500GB Hard Drive (I had to go on a purge just so I could fit Arkham Knight onto the system). But the one thing that's really putting me off taking the plunge and getting a new Hard Drive is I can't find an answer to whether or not I can copy an application straight over. I know for the most part just redownloading the application is the easiest scenario, but in this case the application I'm trying to preserve is 'PT', which to the best of my knowledge I can never get back once it leaves my system. So is there any way I could get it on my new Hard Drive given that it's no longer available to download?

Do a full system backup to an external drive, it has been confirmed in another thread that EVERYTHING is backed up, that means downloaded games, so a demo would be no different Settings>system>backup and restore

  • HT1751 I am trying to backup my iTunes library onto an external hard drive but it won't complete due to 'insufficient privileges for some of the items'. Am I doing something wrong and is there a solution to this problem?

    Hi All,
I am currently trying to backup my iTunes library onto an external hard drive so that I can copy it onto my new Macbook Pro. I have been following the steps posted on the Apple website however each time I get a dialogue box stating:
'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items'.
Is this because I have items that were bought under another persons iTunes account? If so, is there a solution to this problem? Or am I doing something completely wrong?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Moved music to new hard drive now itunes can't find songs !

This is what I did. My old hard drive was getting full so I bought an additional hard drive and installed it. I then selected all the music in the itunes music folder, copied it, then pasted it into a new folder on the new hard drive. I changed the settings in itunes to direct to the new hard drive. All the music i put in there now has exclamation points next to it and can't access the music? Help. I'm desperate....

Different problem. - probably same answer. Yesterday I started iTunes and I had exclamation points on about 20 of my tunes. I re-linked them all manually. I am new to iTunes but I believe I am beginning to understand that unless all the sources are in one library they 'may' get unlinked from time to time. I am going to assume that all of your tunes are linked to a source that no longer exists. So they are all now unlinked.
What I would like to know is how to restore those links. I am going to make another assumtion. Since I believe that iTunes loaded most of them when I first started using iTunes, there is a way to force it to do that again. I have no problem with putting all of my tunes in one library. I know that others have posted the desire to store and link tunes in multiple libraries, and there is a Consoldiate Option that says it will consolidate all of your tunes into one libary. It doesn't work. So how do you force iTunes to relink your files, in or out of the same library?
