I copy text, paragraph styles, character styles & images from 1 document to another only text copies

I have a few documents that have text and images that is frequently repeated through many chapters of an In Design book. (Printing, exporting etc.) I used to select all in the source document, Command + C to copy it, change to the target document, Command + V to paste it. It worked well for six months.
About two weeks ago it stopped working (shortly after an update to In Design). I have text, paragraph styles, chacter styles and images in each document. Only the plain text copies over. This is the same for any document.
I haven't changed Preferences in six months.
I'm on a Mac 10.8.2, In Design CS6 version 8.0.1.
It's driving me crazy! It's a lot of work to reformat each 2 to 10 pages after copying it in.

I can now copy-paste text frames and linked graphics from one document to another using snippets, but embedded images still don't work.
If I embed an image from a pdf file it works but not for jpeg images. When I open the new document (for which I placed the snippet) in InDesign, there is a frame (with a dark grey background and a diagonal cross) shown, but no contents. The place() method did not throw an exception. What am I doing wrong?

Move (or copy or cut and paste) entire sheet from one document to another.

I have several sheets I want to move from one document to another and retain all formatting and spacing, etc.
What is the best way to do this?

On the left of the screen is the list of sheets and tables and charts. Select the sheet. Copy. Paste into the same area (i.e., in the area where the sheets are listed) of the new document.

OK to copy a placed image from one document to another?

Hi all,
I'm laying out two language versions of an illustrated book. Because they're going to be printed with the same CMY plates (with just the black plates being switched between the languages), the color images need to be in exactly the same places in both documents.
I've found that the easiest way to do this is to first place an image in one language version and then copy it from there to the other document using "Paste in place". I just wanted to make sure that this is OK with regard to the color settings etc.
I'm guessing that ID either uses the same import settings for the second doc as the first one, or uses the default settings. But both would be OK, because I want the default settings anyway, with no conversions.

Have you considered using one document, with a layer for one language and a different layer for the other? But yes, you can copy between docs. Just make sure the image is available in the links manager.

Copying image from one document to another

Hello,
It is probably a dumb question, but Macintosh and I are like fire and water. I made an indesign document where all the barcodes of my products are stored and another document with the layout of my catalogue. I would like now to paste the first barcode picture from the first document in the first rectangle of the second document using a script.
This is what i have so far (applescript):

You are completely right! Got my copy of Visual Basic not in the building however.
I just came to the conclusion my questions are quite stupid... It is my first day applescript though!
Here is the solution:

Only by creating a template with what you want.
Apple has removed the ability to import styles inPAges 5 along with almost 100 other features.

Copying a part of image from one file to another

I am very new to InDesign, 2days old. I have to copy a small part of an image from one file and to paste on the other file. Is it possible? If yes, can you anybody explain me step by step?

Welcome to the forum.
Briefly, I would open the image in Photoshop. Crop the area you want. Size it to the finished size at (for printing) 300ppi, save it in the folder where you are going to save your InDesign document. Create a new InDesign document, choose Print for the intent, select the page size, margins, etc. save and name your document. You can place (command/control D) your image. Resizing it and positioning it to suit.
By using a PSD file you can easily round trip back to Photoshop to make more changes.
You should get some lessons, such as those on Lynda.com and Trainsimple.com and there are some excellent books available as well - Classroom in a Book and Visual Quickstart Guide.

Im trying to figure out how to cut and paste an image from one photo onto another. I tried exporting the main photo to a pages document and then inserting the other image, but cant seem to get it to work. Is there an easy way to do this?

There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

If you call AIArtSuite::ReorderArt() giving the layer group handle from the target document and using art from the source document, it will move art between documents. That said, there are all sorts of caveats that come along with that -- some things move over automatically (graphic styles, symbols) while others cause problems. E.g. copying art that contains a swatch can cause a crash when you shut down the source document because it may keep the style reference to the swatch in the source document -- which goes away when the document is closed. Gradients in particular are a problem I believe. Straight up colours are (I think) fine. I've had to write a lot of workarounds for various headaches caused by moving art between documents.
Bottom line: its very doable, but there are a lot of edge cases. This was clearly not an intended use of the SDK, though it is possible.

Cs sdk: copying an item from one document to another

is there a way to copy any item from one ai document to the other ?

I'm not one for bumping old threads, but this problem is really giving me a headache...
I'm having the same exact problem with copying groups from one document to another. It doesn't seem to matter if it's a top-level group or not; any group that gets copied over results in the copied art not showing up in the layer list and gives errors when trying to click on it.
If my source document looks like this:
Layer 1
<path 1_1>
<path 1_2>
Layer 2
<path 2_1>
If I DuplicateArt on the GetFirstArtOfLayer(Layer 1), Layer 1 gets copied into the new document, but it doesn't show up in the layer list and I get errors trying to click on any of the art.
If I iterate over the children/siblings of Layer 1 and duplicate them all separately, <path 1_1> and <path 1_2> will show up correctly in the new layer list and are clickable, but Layer 2 will not, and clicking on <path 2_1> results in the error.
At this point, the only solution I can think of is to recursively iterate over the source tree, manually creating the destination groups, and then copying the art work into them.
Very frustrating!

FW CS5: Copy Page from one document to another without changing layers

how can I copy a Page from one document to another without changing the layers?
Drag-and-drop isn´t possible and by Copy-Paste all elements are placed in the same layer.

Use File > Import.
Open the File, then navigate to the page you want to import
Be sure to select Insert after current page, or FW will just import the content into the current page itself.

Copy single master page from one document to another?

The answer to a previously posted question seems to involve creating a document differently (than I had). A lot of work went into the creation of the master pages in the original document which I will now need to recreate in the new document. Is there a way I can copy one master page from one document to another?

There are a number of ways to do this.
Create a copy of the document you want to copy the Master page from. Delete all pages except for the one you want (but you have to leave Right and Left alone as FM must always have these two pages available).
Open the new document and the one that you want to import the master pages from.
In the new document:
Import from Document: (select the document with the Master Page that you want)
then
File > Import > Formats
and select Page Layouts only.
Note that Right/Left always come along for the ride.
Alternative and probably best way to get a single Master Page:
In new document, add a new Master Page and select "Empty".
In the old document, on the desired Master Page, Select All on page (ctrl+A) and then copy (ctrl+v).
In the new document on the new master page, paste (ctrl+v) to add the layout. Note: you may need to rotate the page first if it isn't in the same orientation as in the old document.

In Pages '09 this does not seem possible.

OK my bad
I just realized that I was in Word Processing in one document and Page Layout in another and you cannot do the copy between the two. Changed the Blank documentto word processing and voila it worked.

I think this might help. Go to the document you want to copy the page from and go to the "View" menu and choose "page thumbnail" so you can see the thumbnails on the side of the document. Right click (or control click) on the thumbnail of the page you want to copy and choose "copy.
Go to the document you want to paste the page into and make sure you have the "View thumbnail" option turned on. If you already have some pages click on the page you want the new page to follow and then right click and paste the page where you want it. (you have to do this in the thumbnail view area, not in the actual document itself.) If you have inserted the page in the wrong spot, just drag it to the right location. note: I have tried dragging the thumbnail from one document to another and it does not work. Too bad because it works that way with a PDF documents in "Preview" app.
