I could record at 192kHz in AA 1.5, but not in AA 3. Help?

I really hope I'm in the right section and also am not missing the answer in another post.
Anyways, I have a SB Audigy 2 Platinum soundcard that's serviced me great for 4 years. I used to record everything, vocals, DVD sound, etc. in 192kHz/32 bit (float) while using AA 1.5, and then converted to whatever format I needed later.
Needing to reformat seemed like a good excuse as any to upgrade to AA 3. But now when I want to record anything, I get a "will only go as high as your hardware sampling rate" message, regardless of the selected input. The SB card boasts of 24-bit/192kHz stereo playback and 96kHz recording. I'm not asking the sound card to record anything (it actually comes with it's own stream recorder and wav editor that I don't use), just "play" the DVD or my microphone at 192kHz, and AA should be down to record it that way.
That's what I imagine AA 1.5 was doing. In fact, I reinstalled 1.5 and it is politely complying with my tyrannical demands to record from Backyardigans DVDs at an unreasonable 192kHz.
Am I missing something?

Hmmm...lots to think about, thanks for a quick reply.
Let's see, I installed a dual-boot system so I'm in the fortuitous position of having installed the included drivers from the CD on the serious serious "DAW" OS, and I used Driver Detective to find me the supposedly updated-est drivers on the "general" OS. Same symptoms on both. On the device manager, the general OS 'Creative SB Audigy' tab actually has WDM in parenthesis which I don't remember pre-reformat. I have to admit, I don't know what WDM means.
I recall that years ago, after installing the soundcard included copy of Steinberg - Cubasis VST 4.0 Creative Edition + Wavelab Lite 2.0 (breath), I noticed an ASIO thing in the programs list. The SB box also says in big letters that it supports ASIO (16-bit/48kHz). 2nd admission of ignorance: I don't know what ASIO means either and how it affects anything, even after reading about it on Wikipedia.
I never used Cubasis or Soundforge. I cut my teeth on Cool Edit and have followed it around through AA 1.5 while my beautiful Yamaha MD8 sits dusty on the shelf.
I will install Cubasis and see if the installation of ASIO changes anything.
