I created a new home folder on an external but didn't move my old files over. Now I can't see the old hard drive in my mac mini. How can I locate that drive?

I wanted to move my home folder to an external drive. I created a new home folder and in advanced options I moved it over. I didn't however move my files over first, my bad. Now I can't see the hard drive on my mac mini. Is it possible to reverse it or get access to the old home folder and is it possible to still use the mac mini's internal hard drive for storage? How do I find my shared folder, it was on the internal drive. I'm new to macs as you might have guessed at this debockle. Can anyone help?

I'm using Mavricks. I wanted to move my home directory to an external and went into sys prop/users/advanced options and moved the folder ok. Being a noobie on Macs I didn't copy my data and such. So my settings were all new. Basicly now I don't see the internal drive on my mini. There is a lot of strage I'm not able to access. The internal drive doesn't show up. How can I put a folder back onto it so it shows up?

  • Replaced HD in my imac, had external backup drive that had everything i needed, but i only transfered a few of the files before Time Machine started a back up before i could transfer all files over, now i no longer see the old files on my external drive

My external drive looks like i still have all the info(taking up a large ammount of data on drive) but i cannot see it.

It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Hello, I'm trying to transfer my old itunes library to a new computer using home sharing. It's switched on in both computers, but I can't see the old library in the new computer. But I can see tracks from the new computer on the old one. Please help.

Apologies for poor syntax, my arm's a little sore. Yes, one computer (old) is vista, new is Windows 8. Shouldn't I be able to import the whole library using home sharing? Am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance

I am having the same issue.  I recently purchased a new laptop and I have spent the last 3 days using the home share to slowly transfer all 22,000 songs.  However yesterday morning when I turned on both computers to continue the process I am having the following issue:
both computers are running the same windows OS (8)
both computers are running the same version of itunes
both computers are logged in with the same apple ID
both computers have home sharing turned on
Now however I can see the NEW computers itunes library in the drop down box on the OLD computer, however I can not see the OLD computers itunes library on the NEW computer.  I can no longer see "HOME SHARES" on the drop down LIBRARY list on the new computer.  I've taken the following steps to correct the error:
    reset the router
completely shut down BOTH computers and brought them back up
    reopened itunes
    re-logged in on both PC's
re-activated both PC's with home share
The articles and help from the apple sites are worthless and it says if you can't see a library just turn home sharing off then back on - I've completed the above steps NUMEROUS times.  After spending 4 days on transferring my music I really do not want to have to start over by using an external hard drive and then importing that way.  I would like some help on discovering why the new laptop is no longer seeing my old library. (When it has been working up to this point)
    Thanks in advance.

  • The video sound faster than video ipad mini, this happen when I download the iOS 7.1 to my iPad mini, how can I fix that?

The video sound faster than video ipad mini, this happen when I download the iOS 7.1 to my iPad mini, how can I fix that? Or just wait till Mac release a new version update, also some game and apps doesn't open or when open they close, please help!!!

Start by closing all apps and resetting your iPad and see if that helps with any of your issues.
To close an app, drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it. Close all of the apps on the iPad this way.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

How can I see the old backups of my previous Macbook done by Time machine in a Time capsule with my new iMac? I've changed from a Macbook to a iMac because that one stopped working and I cannot use it anymore. I've been able to import all the data of the last backup of the Macbook when setting the new iMac, but I cannot access now to the old backups of the Macbook and there are information that wasn't in the last backup and I would like to recover. Thank you very much.

I purchased Mountain Lion on my MacBook and want it on my mac desktop as well. Can I download the same purchase on my desktopMac? and how do i do that?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you purchase Mountain Lion, you can install it as many times as you want on all your computers for free. To install it on the desktop, open the App Store, go to Purchases tab and download OS X Mountain Lion.
Another option is to redownload it on the MacBook, put the installer onto a USB drive and connect it to the desktop in order to upgrade

    1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
    2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
    3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
    4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for.

    Hi heathers,
You would need to print the file to a new PDF with the appropriate page size.

    See if this helps...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password...

Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

I have a new Macbook pro and can't recall the password I used with my Time capsule - How can I (ideally) retrieve or possibly change the time capsule password?

Remember security on a TC is an illusion.
Simply press the reset button for 1-2 sec.. you must not do too long .. it will then hard reset.. but soft reset will revert all passwords to default for 5min. ie TC password is now public.
Remember this the next time because anybody at all can change your passwords.
Once into the TC you can then open the view passwords if you wanted any weaker security. Click and open the TC.. and click on edit.. then go to the top menu..
Voila .. all your passwords in plain sight to any Tom Dick and Fred.

  • Apparently when I send to a Group of Contacts they can all see every email address and this is not acceptable how do I avoid that

I need to send to a group of about 50 parents. Their addresses are held in a Group of Contacts. I highlight the group name to distribute a message to all of them and what I am being told is that they can then all see every email address. This is not acceptable as many do not want their email address being made public in this way. Surely this should not happen or at least there should be a way to avoid it.

re: and I quote "they can then all see every email address. This is not acceptable "
I showed you the basic method of sending a group as Bcc - which is what you initially asked for.
As you now specify that not only do you want to know how to use Bcc but every email needs to be personalised - not just distributing a message to all of them, then I would agree with Matt and advise you use Mail Merge. This creates separate emails - not a bulk email to several recipients, so using a TO field will only send to that person - other people will not see other email addresses.
    Matt has offered the link.
Here is some more info regarding Mail Merge.
    '''How to install Add-ons:'''
download the .xpi file to your computer eg: desktop or downloads folder.
    In Thunderbird
    'Tools' > 'Add-ons' OR 'Menu Icon' > 'Add-ons'
click on the gear wheel icon and select 'Install addon from file'
see first image below as aid.
locate the file you downloaded and click on 'Open'
You may need to restart Thunderbird.
Mail Merge will appear in the list.
    see second image below.
'''How to set up a Template emails for Mail Merge:'''
Create a Template email, which contains the 'personalised' sections.
see example - third image below.
I set the Subject as 'Mail Merge' so it is easily identifiable.
Save it as a Template email.
It will get stored in the 'Templates' folder. If you do not see a Templates folder, this is auto created when you create the first email and store as template.
'''When you want to use Mail Merge.'''
    Select the Template folder.
    Select the 'Mail Merge' template
either double click on the email in the list or right click on email and select 'Edit as new message'
you can then change the Subject and compose or edit the message - but do not change the sections in the curly brackets - the point of saving this as a template saves you from typing it each time.
'File ' > 'Mail Merge' (see third image)
This will open a new small window
    see the fourth image below.
I would suggest you use 'Send Later' option . this will put all the emails in your Outbox, but it does allow you to check the email is correct - or do spot checks. Then you can choose to send them all in one go.
Right click on 'Outbox' folder and select 'Send unsent messages'.
    Hope this info helps you.
As you are new to Thunderbird, you may or maynot have managed to locate all your toolbars.
The fifth image shows you how to enable all toolbars to make life much easier.
In addition some very useful info on maintaining a healthy Thunderbird and all about compacting- what it does and why it is important.

  • Why do I now see the NavService app on my MacBook Air? How do I 'undo' that?

Since a couple of weeks, whenever I start my MacBook Air, an application called NavService is loaded automatically. I checked the list of applications to start at login by going into System Preferences, but it is not listed as an application to start automatically.
The application shows up when you switch between applications but I am not sure what it does and confuses me.
I have also searched the OSX Lion community and did not find anything on the topic except for one dialog hat I don't really understand.
Does anyone have an idea what could cause this and how I get it to no longer do this?
    Thanks!
    Alwin.

Do you use Navionics for marine a marine chart plotter?  I noticed that after I installed all their (lousy) software on my MPB, this Navservice app would start up each time I booted.   It took me a while, but I tracked it down to the "LaunchAgents" folder in my system library.   Siince I quit the app each and every time I boot my MBP, I decided I didn't need it so I simply renamed the file from "com.apple.NavService.plist" to "com.apple.NavService.plist.old" and rebooted my MBP.  Voila, no more NavService app running in the background.
As far as the purpose of this thing, the plist entry is launching the following app:
    /Applications/Navionics World/NavService.app/Contents/MacOS/NavService
Take a look and see if you have the same thing.
The Navionics software for the Mac is obviously written by someone that doesnt' understand how Macs really work, and they scattered junk all over the place with their install routines.  In fact, if you update the software it will place redundant copies in redundant folders, etc. making it impossible to know which versions are the latest, etc.

  • I have signed into a new account on my itunes on my computer. How do I get the music from the new account to be displayed in my library, because I can only see the old accounts music.

I have signed into a new account on my itunes on my windows computer. How do I get the music from the new account to be displayed in my library if only the old account's music is showing up?

You can transfer the music purchased from iTunes Store to the computer but not music acquired somewhere else.
Syncing is one way street, computer to iPhone. You have to use 3rd party tool to transfer music not from iTunes Store to the computer.
