What upgrades do I need to be able to run Mountain Lion? I have the Macbook 2.1, but am reunning leopard. Do I have to purchase the snow leopard, lion then mountain lion? I am a new MAC user, and am just trying to see. It says on the website I have to be running Lion. If I read that correctly, I have to purchase 2 previous updates before I can update to Mountain Lion. Is this correct?

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

Does upgrading an late-model Xserve from Snow Leopard to Yosemite really require an intermediate Mountain Lion installation step?

I have an early-2009 model Xserve currently running Snow Leopard Server. I'd like to upgrade it to Yosemite or Mavericks. Reading the upgrade instructions, it looks like I have to upgrade to Mountain Lion first, and then Server! Is this true?
If so, where can I get Mountain Lion and Server?

You need to upgrade it to Yosemite and separately install the Server application. Mountain Lion isn't required.

I was using OS Snow Leopard and on 8/1/13 I downloaded Mountain Lion and found out it was not compatible with my HP printer (HP photosmart C5580) so I called Apple and asked how to get Mountain Lion off and Snow Leopard back on. The Tech told me to

Then I found out it was not compatible with my HP Printer (HP Photosmart C5580 all-in-one) so I called Apple support and the tech told me to erase the hard drive instead of going in the time machine. Well I did that and then it took about three hours three days a week for about three weeks on the phone with an apple tech to get all my stuff back on my computer. I have had trouble with my printer (won't do the scan anymore and wasn't printing on my DVDs. Also the computer keeps freezing up when it is in the sleep mode, etc.
When I tried to list my problem on this forum it lists your OS at the bottom and mine had Mountain Lion listed as what I was using so apparently it didn't erase it. Want to know how to get Mountain Lion off and put my Snow Leopard on so things start working right.

Go to the  menu/About This Mac - what OS version shows there?
Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
Revert to a Previous OS X
Revert to Snow Leopard
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

Why? Good question. I am a strong believer in not upgrading just because something new comes out, especially if you are running older equipment. I would say unless you see a need for it, just stick with Snow Leopard until something comes along that absolutely requires Mountain Lion.

I would appreciate any advice on the intricacies of operating with Snow Leopard on my main computer and Mountain Lion on my MacBook Air.

I'm not sure there are any intricacies except you can't use iCloud to keep the two things synced. It would be mostly contacts, Safari bookmarks, Calendars, notes, etc.
Also, iCloud allows saving iWork documents in the Cloud, so you can access them on both systems. That would not be available for the old Mac.
The two OSes are similar enough that it wouldn't be too difficult to work between the two, but there will be differences in using the Finder (contextual menu changes)
I thought I would have more, but I've been off Snow Leopard for so long now, I'll leave this for someone who is currently operating like that or recently switch to Mountain Lion from SL.

Your machine likely can't handle Mountain Lion 10.8 nor 10.7, if it does it will run slow and very higly likely a lot of your third party software and drivers for printers and scanners won't function anymore.
It's because your 10.5 era (or earlier) machine is rather dated, hardware has advanced and is faster, the newer OS X versions have gotten bloated.
I do recommend you call Apple via phone and order the 10.6.3 white retail disks, backup your personal data off the 10.5.8 Mac to a external storage drive and when the disk arrives, stick it in and run the upgrade installer.
Once that's finished, reboot and use Software Update to get to 10.6.8 and stay there. You can buy stuff from AppStore, just don't upgrade to 10.8 (or 10.7) as thats when you'll have issues.
10.6 should run your currrently installed PPC software and hardware drivers. But 10.7/10.8 will not.
10.6 is receiving security and other updates from Apple as more than 50% of OSX users are still on it.

You can transfer itunes purchases: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
The iphone is not a storage/backup device. The sync is one way - computer to iphone. The exception is itunes purchases.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer. Use your backup copy to put everything back.
