I currently use Airport Extreme Wanting to extend using another apple airport express
How to set up Airport Express when already using Airport Extreme to extend range.
Extending the range of an 802.11n network
AirPort Utility makes it simple to extend the range of an 802.11n network if you are connecting another 802.11n base station. Connecting two 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations greatly simplifies the WDS setup process.
To extend the range of an 802.11n network:
Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the network name and wireless password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

Can I use an old Airport Extreme as an extender with a new Airport Express
Hi All, I have Verizon Fios and the data line runs into my bedroom. I purchased a new Airport Express today to replace the Airport Extreme (from 2006). Can I use the old Airport Extreme as an extender (I'd like to set it up in the basement as I get poor connectivity there). I tried using the Airport Utility - Other WiFi Devices to find the Airport Extreme, but it's not registering. Is what I'm attempting possible? If so, how do I set it up?
Can I use the old Airport Extreme as an extender
Is this the "round" or "dome" shaped AirPort Extreme?
If yes, then it is not possible to have the AirPort Extreme wirelessly "extend" the signal from the AirPort Express.
However, the older AirPort Extreme can probably be set up to provide more wireless signal coverage if it will connect back to the LAN <--> port on the AirPort Express using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
In this case, the setup of the older AirPort Extreme will require that you have an older version of AirPort Utility installed on your computer. If it is a Mac, then the Mac must be running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility could be used to set up and configure the older Extreme.
f you have the "square" or "flat" version of the AirPort Extreme, then everything becomes much easier. Post back if you do. -
Airport Extreme as an extender for a new Airport Extreme?
I recently purchased a new AEBS model A1521 to replace (kind of) AEBS model A1408 because the WAN port failed on the 1408. Can I set it up as an extender for the 1521? How would I go about doing it? And would you recommend it? Thanks for any help you can offer!
Yes you can use either base station to extend the wireless range of the other. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details.

Settings to use airport extreme as an extender to the Comcast Gateway (3)?
I have been using my airport extreme in bridge mode, but now want to use it as an extender without connecting the ethernet cable to the Comcast Gateway (3). I can't seem to get the Gateway software to recognize the airport extreme as an extender. What settings do I need?
I install a lot of AirPorts, and I recommend if you can't run ethernet, then use a power line extender to feed the AirPort. You will be disappointed extending your network with wi-fi.
If you must, then fully reset the AirPort and start over. It should find the existing HOME-xxxx network and want to use as a bridge. If it doesn't find the network, then with your browser go into the GUI on the gateway at http://10.0.0.1 and find the trusted device page, you might need to modify the setting if the MAC address of the AirPort shows up. Logon is admin and password is password.
Depending on the location of the equipment, you might want to bridge the gateway and use your AirPort as your main router and wi-fi, since it's far superior over a gateway.

How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.
The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network. -
I have a A1143 model Airport extreme with dual band capabilities but not simultaneous, i'd like that to run on the 2.4ghz band, while i have a A1408 model airport extreme as the "extender" but i want to make sure that even though im running the 2.4 and the newer model is extendeding it, my simulataneous dual band will still work to its full potential (ie: 300mbs i think is the max for the 5ghz)..?
notes: no i can't use the newer model as the primary and the older model as the extender.I am assuming that your simultaneously dual-band Extreme is using the same Network Name for both radios. If that is the case, and depending on the distance between AirPorts, the extending Extreme is most likely just extending the 2.4 GHz radio. That would leave the 5 GHz wireless network basically "untouched."

How to add old airport extreme 11g to new airport extreme 11n to extend network?
I am trying to use my old Airport Extreme 11g to extend my wireless network from my newer Airport Extreme 11n. Are they compatible?
They are, but you may want to think twice before using this approach. The reasons are: 1) The extended network will only operate in the 802.11g Radio Mode, and 2) The overall bandwidth will be reduced by half for each base station added. Since this will be a "g" network, you'd be getting around 25-27 Mbps maximum of bandwidth.
If you still would like to pursue this, please check out the following Apple Support article for the details. -
How do I extend my existent airport extreme network by addition of a 2nd airport extreme?
How do I extend my existent Airport Extreme network by addition of a 2nd Airport Extreme?
Can you clarify which version of the AirPort Extreme that you have now along with the model that you plan to use as the second device?
The older "round" AirPort Exteme or the newer "square" version with rounded corners?
Are you planning to extend using wireless only.....or by connecting the AirPort Extremes using a wired Ethernet connection? -
How do i set up time capsule to work with airport extreme base to extend wireless network?
i have a airport extreme base, how do i set up a time machine to extend the wireless network i have with airport extreme? i have also 3 airport express's connected to the same network to extend my wifi all over my house. thanks in advance.
Much better graphics, thanks.
You can leave the Time Capsule connected by Ethernet from the Linksys and configure for a "roaming" network as mentioned previously.
To do this, open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme
No check mark needed next to Allow this network to be extended
Radio Mode = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon, then the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and allow the Time Capsue to restart
Then power down the entire network
Wait a minute or two
Start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme the same way
Power up the switch
Power up the Time Capsule for a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart
Now, your computer will automatically pick up a wireless signal from either the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, whichever device is closer and providing the stronger signal. -
To be more detailed, my AirPort Extreme needs to be extended by an AirPort Express, which then is extended to my personal Time Capsule. The internet drops on my MacBook Pro and other MacBook Pros randomly. We then reconnect with no problem and go on with what we were doing. The internet is fine. Always able to connect. We have Open DNS set up as well. But the flaky internet is annoying. Any ideas how to fix this?
The primary issue that you will need to contend with is the distance between routers. 300' would be at the fringe of the signal coming from the base station located in the house which, most likely, make it too "weak" to extend/repeat with the second base station at the shop.
There is a method to configure a relay base station between them in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS), but a WDS has two major drawbacks: 1) It can only operate in the 802.11g Radio Mode, and 2) For every base station participating in the WDS, the overall bandwidth will be cut in half .., so with a total of three (main, relay, & remote), the maximum of 54 Mbps (for 802.11g) would be more like 15-17 Mbps. If you plan on streaming HD video (either 720p or 1080p), your local wireless network may not have enough bandwidth to do so successfully.
You proposal to run the DSL line to the shop does offer another option. Instead of running a DSL line, run an Ethernet cable between the house and the shop. You would connect one end to any of the available LAN ports on the AirPort Extreme to the Ethernet port on the AirPort Express. You can then configure both base stations into a roaming network and not have bandwidth loss of the WDS. -

I have an airport extreme as my primary, I then have an express wired to my extreme. i also have another express as wifi. I am not sure if both express' should be in bridge mode or extend. Please help. Carl
The express wired to the extreme should be in bridge and setup to create a wireless network.. your best bet is to follow the roaming instructions.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4260
Then the second one can be in extend wireless if you cannot wire it.. it can extend from either the extreme or the express.. -

Can an airport extreme base station attached to another airport extreme base station set up as an extender transmit a different network name and have it's own security?
No. The AirPort cannot extend another AirPort's wireless network and simultaneously broadcast its own wireless network.
It can however, be connected to another router (including another AirPort) by Ethernet, and then, be configured to broadcast a wireless network with another Network Name and Security Type. -
