I don't have much knowledge in Powerpivot, so I'm trying to see if what I want to do is feasible in Powerpivot before delving further into it.
I have a database with multiple tables that is quite de-normalized, and I want to allow end-users to use Excel and check off boxes on a field list to give them more or less information. There is nothing setup in SSAS for me, no fact tables, no dimensions,
nothing - and I most likely will only have access to SSMS & Excel to produce this.
For example, the database has one table listing all the sales orders, another listing the possible payment methods, another listing the customers, another listing the products, etc all linked together via various keys. If I write a query to join everything
together so that each of the results says "Order #, Payment Method, Customer, Products Purchased", I can get a Powerpivot made from it, but it is very slow and it behaves like it is summing everything when most of the data I need it to produce is
text (in fact, I don't really need any aggregation done at all, but I want the ability to use slicers, connect to SQL, etc.). Is there a way in powerpivot I can link a bunch of tables together (based on their PK/FK) and then the user can pick the items they
want from a field list and have it populate like a cube? This way, a manager could open the file and only show how many customers they have, only show which sales were done via credit card, etc. I want to provide a cube/data dump/operational reporting replacement
as our current reporting solutions are inadequate.
Sorry for the vagueness, but I feel like Powerpivot can do what I want it to, but I'm also fearful of investing a lot of time learning it and building it only to have the end result not be what I'm expecting.
Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

The main task and the great power of
PowerPivot is in aggregate
data. But if you want you can use it as a plain reporting tool. You can import data into a workbook and create relations between tables.
In Internet there are several examples available, the most base on the sample database "AdventureWorks", which is a ERP database for products/customers/orders and so on. Some examples can be found here:

Cube refresh fails with an error below

Hi,
We are experiencing this problem below during planning application database refresh. We have been refreshing the database everyday, but all of a sudden the below error is appearing in log. The error is something like below:
Cube refresh failed with error: java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling return; nested exception is:
java.io.EOFException
When the database refresh is done from workspace manually, the database refresh is happening successfully. But when triggered from unix script, its throwing the above error.
Is it related to some provisioning related issue for which user has been removed from MSAD?? Please help me out on this.

We have not made any changes to either the shell or 'CubeRefresh.sh' or 'setHPenv.sh'
From the past couple of days the shell that executes 'CubeRefresh.sh' has been failing with the error message below.
Cube refresh failed with error: java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling return; nested exception is:
java.io.EOFException
This error is causing our Essbase cubes to not get refreshed from Planning cubes through these batch jobs.
On the other hand the manual refesh from within Planning works.
We are on Hyperion® Planning – System 9 - Version : 9.3.1.1.10
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

For which functinality you are trying to create VC with services.
This is mostly used in SEM BCS.
You have to create cube similar path like normal cube, but select in the properties virtual cube, services.
There is a standard FM which connects the Virtual cube to the required cube in BCS. ( this is done by BCS data basis generation function) and we have to do nothing for FM.
In BCS we use virtual cube only for reporting purpose, since standard BCS cube cannot be used for reporting. hence what we do is create another virtucal cube very smiliar to BCS cube.
Then both the Virtual cube and BCS cube are connected by standard FM.

Creating a cube using OEM

I have an Oracle 10g database that has 5 tables in it. these tables are linked together through keys. Now, I am curious to know if I can create a cube with two or more dimensions based on columns from the same table, and also have the measure(s) for that cube be from the same table?? Would I need to create a view of that table and use that view as the "fact table"?
It seems like the cubes built in a lot of these samples use dimensions where each of those dimensions each come form a separate table. Does it always have to be that way?

We (i.e. the company I work for) creates software (in C++) which needs to work with a lot of data which is in an Oracle-DB.
As the analysis done by the SW would profit (performance-wise) from the layout of the data in an cube, we want to get the data in a cube.
But information like the number of dimensions isn't known beforehand (as that's sth. that's dependent on the site the customer uses the SW on, and can
change with time), the software has to do the creation of dims and the cube itself.

And as OLAPI isn't available for C++ (at least afaics), I'd really want to do this in PL/SQL.

AWM, then save the build script it generates, and use
that to do subsequent builds.

G4 Cube, External Hard drive, and Darwin oh my!

I was given a G4 cube that was having difficulties booting up. At some point in time someone upgraded the hard drive from 30GB to 120GB...When I first got it, I inserted the OS 10.4 DVD and ran a disk utility, repaired permissions, erased the hard drive and tried to do a clean install of 10.4.6. This worked fine. When the computer booted up, I went through the initial setup and updates. When the updates finished downloading, I got various error messages including "the digital signature for this package is incorrect," "invalid checksum," "codec error" etc. My intention for this computer is to put 10.4.11 on it and connect it to my TV to use as a server for music. After a while, the computer stopped working so I had to repeat the process. This time around I loaded 10.4.6 and then did the updates one by one 10.4.7, 10.4.8 etc...I made it all the way to 10.4.10 and when I installed 10.4.11 and restarted the computer, it booted up in Darwin. I gave up for a few days, but then found my old Lacie external drive. I loaded 10.4.6 on the drive, changed my startup disk, did the updates, and haven't had a single problem since then. It seems so obvious that the hard drive in the cube is defective, but I dont want to spend $75 dollars for a computer shop to tell me that. What do you guys think? If it is defective, I will likely by a new one to replace it with and install it myself...(it looks really really easy). Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas for good internal hard drives? Let me know!!

Sounds like the cube's drive is flaky, all right. I'd give it a shot one more time, in case the initial 10.4.6 install wasn't quite kosher. I'd also make sure all the connections are tight. Otherwise, a new HD is indicated.
Two things to be aware of with Cubes:
They use EIDE, aka PATA drives, which are quickly becoming obsolete and harder to find.
They will natively only handle drives up to 128GB in size. If you install a larger drive, the cube will only see 128GB. For OS 10.2 and later, there is a work-around documented here:

Another possible but less likely problem is someone also replaced the DVD ROM drive. The optical drive in a cube has to be configured as "slave" and the HD as "master" (not "cable select"). Most laptop optical drives like the cube uses are fixed as "master" at manufacture, so if one of those is plugged in, you have two master drives and neither works reliably. If that were the case, you wouldn't have gotten as far as you did before crashing.

Error while loading data into the cube

Hi,
I loaded data on to PSA and when I am loading the data to the cube through DataTransferProcess, I get an error (red color).
Through "Manage", I could see teh request in red. How do I get to knoe the exact error? Also what could be the possibel reason for this?
Also can some one explain the Datatransfer process(not in process chain)?

after you load the data through DTP(after click on execute button..) > just go to monitor screen.. in that press the refresh button..> in that it self.. you can find the logs..
otherwise.. in the request screen also.. beside of the request number... you can see the logs icon.. you can click on this..

Cube Spin Transiton Shows Horizonal Blue and White Lines through out Poss BUG?

Don't know if this is a bug but I am seeing a 2 to 5 pixel Blue Line (the same colour as the CTI, CYAN) on the Cube Spin Transition when in use in Premiere Pro CC.
I am on 8.0.1.
I also notice that it appears on the renders and exported material.
Original Sequences are HDV 50i 1440x1080 and abit of 1980 x 1080 @29.97 MP4 Files taken from a Sanyo XACTI Camera.
It is visable when both playing back and scrubbing or parking the CTI inbetween the 2 clips, I am also seeing a White Line not as think at times on the left side of the Transition.
It looks like the Enable Overscan Transition setting that I used to have in EDIUS, where the default settings where set for 3% Overscan and had to be set to 0% for Transitions.
I am using an ASUS 760GTX 4GB Card with MPE On.
Just wondering if there was a quick fix before I go though and have replace this transition with a similar one, though have used it 30+ times in this project so far, am gonna have alook out see if I can see a free Cube Spin/Advance Type Transition on the internet to use as I purposely chose this on
as it fits in well.
anyway, I noticed this Line Appearing thoughout the editing process and thought that it was like Premiere Pro way of tell me that the transition had begun, like the show end of media indicator and not though that it would actually show in the final exports on the render, even on the downscale it shows when rendered to MPEG-2 DVD.
I saw another post on this on here but that dates back to CS 5.5.
I have attached a few grabs to show you. have to look very closely or download them as on whit background, but on the first there is a very thin white line and on the left of the frame and you will see the cyan line on the right a bit thicker
The First one is the very start of the transition, where the CTI hits the 1st Frame of the Transition
. Not on the left a Thin White Line and as Described on the Right the Cyan Slithly Thicker, Looks to be Same or Simialr Colour to The CTI.
Then as the transitions moves, though, the left white line disappears and you have the right Cyan Line Showing all through the transition, until it is completed.
As say, if there is a simple fix, then it would be appreciated so save having to alter all of the existing ones, as I say, kinda like the Cube Spin.

Appols if the attached images are too big, my fault, not used to posting images, anyways, if you click on each image to show full screen then you can see the lines better.
Anyway, anyone know a free one I can add in that works well?

How to archive info cube with non-cumulatives values ??

It's regarding archiving, but right now archiving in Info Cube with cumulative values like Info cube movement.
Because it's rather different than other cube due it has marker ..
I've already read from article discussing about archiving, it said i must archive the data before the marker (it's if i'm not having incorrect understanding). But right now, i don't know where the marker is ??
My questions are:
1. Could somebody help me please giving me explanation regarding it ??
2. If don't mind, would you like to explain me step-by-step how to archive it ??
3. Is my comprehension above correct that we have to archive data before the marker ?? If yes, how can i know where the marker is (What date does the marker point to ?? ) ??

Data flow not visible while creating remote cube.

I am working on a remote cube. I need to link the infosource to remote cube. I have selected the source system and assigned.
I have done, like--Remote cube --> Context Menu --> Show Data flow , and I wanted to see the source system , Info source and the remote cube, but could not find them .
Guide me what I've missed /went wrong.

Hi,
Remote cube is technology where you report on data which is stored in the source system. While creating the Infocube you have to select Remote Infocube Radiobutton and in the next screen it will ask you for the infosource.
In that infosource you can assign the datasource in the infosource menu.
Now you see the data flow.

you can have multiprovider which can collect the information from various cubes that provide info to report.
1. as you wish u can choose the application related cubes for report . like inventory cubes. filter based on the cube data for required output.
2. if you combine all cubes under one multiprovider then restrict based on application.

What sort of optimization techniques i need to follow in order to build a cube for fast retrievals.I do not mind of disc space, but for the users retrivals should be fast. Please suggest!!

ASO cubes are much faster to calculate but I don't know that they are any quicker to retrieve from. Materalizing aggragations makes them faster than if you don't. And of course MDX formulas could slow down retrieval depending on how complex the formula is. That said, just like BSO cubes, they are pretty quick to retrieve from in most cases

3D Cube problem

As of my experiences with the new 'SCENE3D' conditional (optional) feature my conclusion is:
The cube faces (Rectangle) are drawn in order of their position in the children sequence: if face (j) overlaps face (i; i < j) it is drawn on top. Their z-/depth-values are ignored! So, if a face is rotated away from the camera's position and its z-values are increased it is drawn still not before the predecessors in the sequence are drawn.
In case of a simple model like a cube or box this dilemma can be solved by hiding (visible = false) all covered faces. A cube's face is covered when its frontside 'Normal' is directed away from the camera.
Doing more complex 3D modelling and animation based on these features would be a nice way to torture students by a (sadistic) professor.
Elsewhere it is said that the new 'prism' renderer is only +"... available in the 1.3 development environment, but *not in a deployed applet or JWS*."+ and +"... used on TV, it is *not supported in 1.3 on desktop*. Turning it on manually is for development purposes and kicks and giggles. Actually deploying an app with it turned on may or may not work in this release"+.

IN BW 7.0:
          1.create a new ods....at that time which keyfields&data fields(same like ur cube) to be assigned for two dimensional view..here not havin transfermation&dtp....so must create dat for new ods...

IN BW 3.5:
          2.right cllick ur cube.....additional functions(last option)->generate export data source...click it....wait for some times...data source created now...u can see d ods inside of ur cube.....but here not having info source,transfer rules,data source,info package...so u must create for new ods....
