I'd like a spell checker that'll work in 8.1?

Hey all, I had a spell checker for FF, updated it seems to have gone

The built in spelling checker works fine, but may need some attention to some details first. I use it and I also use an extension that checks spelling and Grammar.
Spelling Check: SpellCheck:
:Firefox has a built-in spelling checker see
*http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/tab_capacity/001_with_underscore.htm#spellcheck
*http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/tab_capacity/001_with_underscore.htm#spellcheck_jumpstart
Once set up, you will see wavy lines under misspelled words. Right-click on the identified word to replace with corrected spelling or to add to the dictionary.
After fixing your spell checker and waiting a couple days so you are sure it is working properly with nice red wavy lines under misspelled words, I would install the extension that checks your spelling and grammar. For spelling the built-in spell checker is better.

  • How to troubleshoot issues that Spell Check is not working in Outlook 2013

When composing a new message in Outlook 2013, we may notice that Spell Checker does not recognize misspelled words. When we enter a completely garbage word in Outlook, it won’t be marked as misspelled with a red wave underline. When encountering such issue,
we may follow the troubleshooting guide below to correct it.
    1. Make sure you are not typing in the signature area.
Outlook doesn't perform a spell check in the signature area, so if this is the case, spell check won’t work. To confirm if you are typing in the signature area, right click in the area you are typing, if you see a menu listed all you signatures instead of
the normal context menu, then you are not typing in the email body.
If you want spell check work in signature area, use Quick Parts instead of Signature. For more information, see
    Quick Parts.
    2. Check the Set Proofing Language option.
In Outlook, click New Email to open a new message, click
REVIEW tab > Language > Set Proofing Language, a dialog titled
    Language will open.
Please first make sure English (United States) is shown above the double line. If not,
you must enable the language for it to be available to check spelling.
Second, make sure “Do not check spelling or grammar” check box is not selected.
Note: If this method fixes the problem, repeat steps 1 through 3 to reopen to the
Language dialog box, and then click Set As Default.
    3. Enable Check spelling as you type.
To enable the option in Outlook, go to File > Options > Mail, click Spelling and Autocorrect button. In the Editor Options dialog, select the check box labelled “Check spelling as you type”.
    4. Make sure that you are not using a standalone version of Outlook or mixed versions of Word and Outlook.
The “Check spelling as you type” feature doesn’t work when using a standalone installation of Outlook or mixed versions of Word and Outlook. However, the manual spell check always works. In this scenario, we can set Outlook to
always check spelling before sending. To do this, go to File > Options > Mail, select the check box before “Always check spelling before sending” in the Compose message section.
    5. A registry key exists overriding the spell checker
To remove the registry key, please follow these:
Important This article contains information about how to modify the registry. Make sure that you
back up the registry before you modify it.
    a. Press Windows key + R to open the Run command.
    b. In the Run box, type regedit, and then press Enter.
    c. Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Override
    d. Delete or rename the subkey.
    e. Exit Registry Editor. Restart Outlook.
    6. Recreate the NormalEmail.dotm and Normal.dotm template
If the two templates above are corrupt, this issue may also happen. To fix it, please browse to:
    drive:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
Rename the two templates, then restart Outlook to see the result.
    7. Problematic add-in
Add-ins may cause various issues in Outlook, so if you have tried all the suggestions and still no luck, try starting Outlook in safe mode to see if a problematic add-in is the culprit. To do this, exit Outlook, press Windows key + R to open the Run
command, then type outlook /safe and press Enter. If the problem disappeared in safe mode, then go to File > Options > Add-ins and disable the suspicious add-in to resolve the problem.

  • Spell checking won't work

After the last update to Photoshop CS6 Extended (now version 13.0.1 x64), I find that the spell checker won't work. I get the following message:
Everything worked just fine just prior to the last update. Any thoughts?

have you installed the appropriate dictionaries for the said program?
I think pidgin uses aspell. you will also need to install the language dictionaries like aspell-en or any other that you want.

  • After downloading Firefox, my e-mail spell check doesn't work

for years I had used IE. I recently installed Firefox and now my e-mail spell check doesn't work. The dictionary is loaded but cannot figure out how to resolve this. It still works when using IE, so am assuming it's a Firefox glitch.

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?
    * You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
    * Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
    * Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.
You can enable or disable spell checking globally:
    * Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"
You can look here for dictionaries:

  • Eudora Spell Check Doesn't Work in SL 10.6.1

Eudora's spell checking function stopped working after installing SL 10.6.1. It worked OK in 10.6. All the Eudora files seem to be in place. The spell check works when using a backup copy of Eudora that was made before converting from OS 10.5.8 to 10.6; but it does not work after moving that copy of Eudora to the HD with 10.6.1. Any ideas to get spell check working again? Am I seeing the beginning of the end of Eudora?
    Thanks! -- GKernTucson

You can find ispell-de in the AUR.
Edit: There's an option to choose the language at the bottom of the spellchecking-dialog in Kile [Tools->Spelling->Language]
Ah, ok, I'll ask my yoghurt. ;-)
Just because I'm curious: Is it correct that aspell is ispell's successor? So if there ever will be a KDE 4 version of Kile it will probably use aspell, right? Just trying to see the connections here...
I mean after all there's a reason behind the fact that ispell-de isn't part of the repository whereas aspell-de is.

  • InDesign CC spell check is not working at all

I have been using InDesign for around a month now and now my spell check is not working at all. I have tried replacing preferences, changed dictionaries, created new documents with placeholder text and spell check does nothing at all with all of these things. Please Help

  • Illustrator CS5 Spell Check No Longer Works?

    Mac 10.8.5, Illustrator CS5

What language is assigned to the file? Make sure that the More Options are shown in the Character panel and at the bottom, what language is assigned?

  • Universal Spell Checker doesn't work.

For some reason my universal spell checker wont work. I am using TextEdit, where it worked fine until recently. Is anyone else having this problem? And yes, I checked ON the appropriate function in the menu. I am on a MacBook Pro with the latest OS (10.5.4).

After reading your post I tried TextEdit and spell check wasn't working for me either, I opened preferences and check spelling was selected, I then selected Check grammar with spelling as well, and it worked, I then de-selected Check grammar and Spell check worked normally.

  • IChat 'spell checker' doesn't work.

    Hello,
Recently upgraded to Tiger .. and the spell checker doesn't work when selected as 'Check spelling as you type'. It works manual -when I click on 'Check Spelling' ... but not whle I type.
The spell checker works fine in Mail and Pages, etc. Just not iChat.
I did reinstall iChat and didn't solve problem.
    Any thoughts?

Just to add more info - when selected as 'Check spelling as you type' ... when I type a misspelled word, it will underline the word in red. BUT - when I right-click the word - NO word suggestions are in the popup menu.
If I click 'Check Spelling' ... and then right-click the word ... it works perfectly ... with word suggestions in the popup menu AND other options (ignore spelling, learn spelling ... etc)
    Thanks.

  • I have OS 10.4.11 and would like a Firefox browser that will work. Please advise

I have OS 10.4.11 and would like a Firefox browser that will work. Please advise . I know that this version exists because i have it on another Mac laptop. Please tell me where I can get a version of Firefox compatible with my OS

Firefox 3.6.x is the last available from Mozilla for PPC Macs. <br />

  • Spell Checker is not working although it's enabled in the Settings and I've already installed the dictionary

I'm using the 3.6.10 version of firefox
    Mac OSX 10.5.8
the spell checker is not working correctly although all the settings needed are correct,
the dictionary's installed, the Spell checking is enabled from the “Browsing” section of “General” tab under “Advanced” heading .
but still it only underlines the misspelld words without giving me the probabilities of the right word .
this problem started to appear after I updated my browser version .
additionaly there is no "Add dictionary" or anything related to spell checking when I right-click the writing area .

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Spell check widget wont work

after updating from os 10.4 the spell check widget wont work. when i right, or control click, it just high lights the word.

I used to have many Widgets installed on my old iMac and don't remember a spelling one. On this new MBP with 10.6 there is no spelling widget. The closest thing is Dictionary. It doesn't offer spelling corrections, just definitions. You have to highlight the entire word and then Copy and Paste it into whatever document or application you are using.
At the universal level, built into the OS, are spelling tools. You do not have to leave your app. You do not have to highlight the entire word. All you have to do is right-click (control+click) on a word and get access to Spelling/Grammar/Dictionary and even Tweet it if you wish. No Dashboard is necessary.

  • Spell Check is not working, still......

Another long time user that has been with you for years has had enough, over to Opera where I can write an email without looking like an unprofessional <!-- dipshit --> dummy that can't even use spell checker.
Linux mint 14, fully updated, two different pc's both same problem with spellchecker, this problem has been going on for a long time now. Do you really expect people to use a browser without a spellcheck? This has been a 'bug' for how long now? People just go elsewhere, why wouldn't you, try running a business and sending people sketchy looking emails.
I fix PC's for a living, I used to put everybody onto Thunderbird and Firefox, do you think I still do that? Obviously like the people I know who do the same thing for a living, I put them onto Chrome so they don't ring me complaining that it doesn't work properly.
You guys are loosing market share for a reason, we need a functional non bloated browser that doesn't freeze and crash all the time, <!-- fuck --> forget the fancy add-ons and themes, make the <!-- fucking thing --> basics work because from the techiest person to the most useless pleb luddite, we all need the basics to work or the browser is a useless piece of <!-- shit --> crap.
This site is proof of how you are alienating people too, I go to register and it tells me I don't need to register for a new question, I click on that and half way through it asks me to register, then when registering it took about 6 tries for your javascript to accept it: "username too short", "password is short", "username exists". Tell us before ffs! I nearly gave up and shut the window. Anybody unfamiliar with pc's would have given up after a try or two and gone back to IE.
Please, please, get your <!-- shit --> stuff together, I love Mozilla and I love Firefox, it's named after my favourite baddies in the original Donkey Kong, ffs, I love you guys, get back to basics and make a functional browser that people prefer to IE, you are killing it, get back to basics and make it FUNCTIONAL

I had this problem too, spell check stopped working, I presume after an update. The solution is to add a dictionary, which you can by going to
    [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/ Firefox language Tools]
Though why this link is not on the same option tab as the spell check checkbox is beyond me. It appears that if your locale is US, Firefox is supposed to load the US dictionary, otherwise none. Pretty dumb, eh?

  • Pages IWORK'08 spell check doesn't work--here's the fix

Pages stopped spell checking. Some suggested deleting com.apple.iwork.pages.plist off the HD in case Pages was corrupted so it could rebuild the spell check feature but that was not necessary in my case.  Here is the painless fix.
    -Open a pages document
-Go to Edit and SELECT ALL
-Then go to INSPECTOR  text  (blue T) MORE and be sure language is set to English, then close out of Inspector
-Go to EDIT, SPELLING and set “check spelling as you type”  or "Check spelling"
Just remember that PAGES needs to know what you want to do so you have to SELECT ALL for it to check everything on the document.

That is not sufficient if you have not also corrected your Text Styles to the appropriate language.
Text is styled with a language, usually the default, just as it is with a font or color.
Unless you update all your styles and use them, every time you reintroduce new text or use those like Free Form you will have text with either the wrong language or no language.
