I'd Like to thank Sun Microsystems

Hello all, My Name is Nathan Evans. I live in Ontario,Canada and work as a Labourer.
Until Recently, I had not had the opportunity to use Solaris, Nor Studio Creator, because i could not afford them, but thanks to Sun Microsystems for releasing some of their Core products for free to use, I have finally been able to enjoy using alot of Suns Products.
Thank you Very much for allowing a poor hobbyist like my self to finally use quality, stable software, with out piracy.
As of this moment I am saving what little money I can to pay for my Solaris training, after which i plan on taking Java training as well.
So Thank you very much, it is more then appreciated, and you have made my life a hell of alot more interesting.
You have given me something to work towards, Solaris Certification, so that i can get a meaningful job besides busting my back to provide for my family.
Thank you.
Sincerely
Nathan Evans

On behalf of Sun Microsystems I'm delighted to say "You're welcome. Enjoy!"
You should be aware that our middle ware stack (Sun Java System Web Server, Sun Java System Application Server, Sun Java System Portal Server, etc) is also covered by the Solaris Enterprise License. This entitles users to download, use in production environments, etc entirely free of charge. For mission critical uses Sun offers Right To Use licenses that provide indemnification, and Support contracts that provide guaranteed Service level Agreements. Sun also has excellent training courses available for most of our products.
So - You're welcome! Don't be shy about spreading the word.

  • Sun Microsystems JVM version 1.5.0

    Hi! On this page:
    http://www.norwalkfurnitureidea.com:80/roomplanner.asp
when I wanted to use Room Planner I got a Warning: You are using a Java Virtual Machine from a vendor other than Sun Microsystems (Apple Computer, Inc.). The recommended JVM is Sun Microsystems version 1.5.0. Older versions of the JVM have problems saving and loading large room plans. Would you like to download the latest version from www.java.com now?
Question: What to do to be able to use Room Planner (if that is possible)?
    TIA (thanks in advance)!

To run Java 1.5 I think you will need to upgrade to
    OS X 10.4.5 at least:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/j2se50release4p
    pc.html
Tom, thanks so much for your reply. I marked it helpful only because I'm not sure of a couple of things on the apple link. The immediate version of Java 1.5 is 5? Is this link saying that I would DEFINITELY need Java 5 to use Room Planner?

  • Is JAVA 3D supported by Sun Microsystems?

    Hi,
I will like to know whether java3D is being supported by Sun Microsystems?
    Thank you.

Sure. But then, I heard a while ago (I think it was about Java3D) that the webstart launch at java.net was more up to date than the one on the Sun site. For the java.net J3D, see [https://java3d.dev.java.net/] & [http://forums.java.net/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=70].

I would like to thank PlotinusVeritas for his or her advice on how to fix external hard drive. It worked. Many thanks! I am new and may not be the right place to post my message here. But I am really grateful and want to express my appreciation to PlotinusVeritas.

    Mickey,
    Here is your original topic:
Need Help with my External Hard Drive
PV seldom if ever visits this forum as it is for Macs made before 1998.

  • This is my first post. I would like to thank you all for all of the information you have posted on this forum. It has been most helpful to a Newbee. I have a MBP17 w/trackpad and click bar from '08. I need a bigger HD, how big can I go? THX

This is my first post, but I have been following this forum for a while and you have all been very helpful in my MacEducation. I have a MBP17 10.6.8 w/6GB ram from '08. I need to upgrade my HD from 200GB. I would like to go as big as I can and would appreciate any experiance you've had. Could I go 750GB or 500 GB @ 7200 rpm.  Should I upgrade to Lion before I swap the drive out?  Thanks, Johnny

    Hi Johnny,
Yes you can do the 750 or 500, 5400 or 7200. Just make sure it is 2.5" SATA and 12.5mm high or less (there is at least one HD out there that is 15mm high and will not work).
Lion: I don't know that it matters much either way, just don't do them at the same time. That way, if there are issues, you have a much better chance of troubleshooting one major change instead of two.

  • Thanks Sun for handcuffing our Solaris 10 boxes

You guys have me in a major holding pattern. I have a Solaris 10 box that was running the SUC (the acronym is funny) preview release without problems. When updating to the 1.0 release, I can not load updates. The system can not re-register becuase I get the error "Sun Subscription Key already in use". This machine is supposed to be my patch proxy for 25 other machines, as it was with Solaris 9. We also can not download patch clusters because of your requirement to register Solaris 10 machines, and guess what, can't do that either. I have a Silver Spectrum contract and expect you to honor the terms of the contract with the necessary support to fix this issue so I can patch my Solaris 10 machines. Please reply or resolve this issue.

Hello. I can appreciate your frustration. As I cannot see your contact details I cannot contact you directly but please note that we are aware of your issue and are pursuing it right now. I am working with our entitlement team and Peter whom I believe are working with within the Solution center. We should be contacting you soon with more information. Thank you for your patience.

  • Updating links on erstwhile Sun Microsystems web pages

For example, the JMF home page:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/tech/index-jsp-140239.html
    Has a "forums" link to
    http://forum.java.sun.com/forum.jsp?forum=28
which needs to be updated to
    Java Media Framework
    Some (all?) link addresses on
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/index-135148.html
have been updated, but the link text still refers to the java.sun.com domain. Quite confusing, that.
I'm sure there are many others like that.

    What?
If that means what I read into it ... so before exploding, I'll ask for clarification: what about URLs to threads/messages to the old Sun forums? You'r aware that they are an important part of our accumulated knowledge base, do you?

Links degrade over time. They must never be depended upon, even internal to a system. This is unlike a proper database, where referential integrity is considered important. Your mission, should you decide to accept, is to deal with it. If any of your IM posting force is caught or killed, the DBA will disavow any knowledge of your actions. Your browser will self-destuct in 5 seconds. Good luck Kleo.

  • Sun Microsystems, are  you listening?

I've been going through many of these posts on this message board only to notice that so many Java and would be Java programmers are having the same problem with animation as I am. Many of the problems seem to stem from the Graphics.drawImage() method. Simply put, we are asking the JVM to draw an image on a buffer. We are NOT asking the JVM to schedule a time to draw nor are we wanting a thread to be spawned. What we need is the image to be drawn to the buffer and a return value of true or false when the function is complete. Most importantly, we want the process of drawing an image to begin the moment drawImage() is called without delay!
If in your wisdom you feel that us lowly programmers need your help with timing issues, feel free to wait for the next horizontal refresh. But only do so if you can accomplish that feat with skipping a refresh. Otherwise, I would prefer to handle my own timing.
drawImage() is a command to be carried out immediately, not a leisurely request.

I'm testing this app on several different workstations to find some very disturbing differences. First of all, on a Windows box, it's running at about 32 FPS but smooth as glass. On a Linux box it runs at about 52 FPS but very jerky. However, on the Linux box, if you keep the mouse in motion (and on the applet), the graphics become much smoother (tolerable) until the mouse stops.
What seems to be happening here is that the paint() function is getting scheduled and then performed whenever. Therefore, several of the frames, get "dropped". Keeping the mouse moving might be giving the paint() function a higher priority, and therefore painting is happening immediately. My gripe is that there is no way for me to code this desired effect, despite the fact that the JVM can handle the command. (As demonstrated by moving the mouse around the screen)
Thanks for the advice, but I don't believe that is the answer. I am using a doubled buffered technique. You can see that for yourself if you like by viewing this code.
    http://astrodust.com/games/somegame/CptWydner.java
If you follow the code you will see that the function act() renders graphics to the back buffer and the function paint() simply paints the buffer to the applet. If you have 2 machines, one running Linux and one running windows, you will also the aforementioned difference in performance by running this applet. You can see what your FPS is by opening the Java console.
    http://astrodust.com/games/somegame/applet.htm
If anyone has an OS other than Linux or Windows (especially Mac OS X) I would really like to know what your experience is in reference to this applet.
To answer your question about the true/false return, I was thinking a true on success and a false on failure at the time I wrote that statement. However, since then I've considered the fact that a try/catch block or an integer return might be of more value. An example integer return might be 0 for no errors or an integer code for the reason of failure. More of a C mindset I guess. The "Java" way would obviously be the try/catch method. Either is preferred to not knowing when the painting is done.

  • Top like utility for Sun Web Server  using dtrace. (similar to apachetop)

I have written a "top" like utility (wstop.pl) using dtrace for Sun Java
System Web Server 7.0. Interested users can download it from my blog :
    [Web Server and dtrace|http://blogs.sun.com/basant/entry/sun_web_server_and_dtrace]
This utility only works on Solaris 10 and later releases. Compiled plugin
binary and utility can be downloaded from my blog page.
I have not tested it with 6.1 but I believe it should work for 6.1 too.

SUNWS61deployment.xml is created bythe IDE to be used internally and not to be used by the developer. This file wouldn't be sent to webserver after deployment.
The ws61-sun-web.xml is sun-web.xml only and yes it is same as it is in Appserver7 as the webcontainer for both Webserver6.1 and Appserver7 are same. After deployment to webserver, ws61-sun-web.xml is renamed to Webserver as sun-web.xml by the IDE. When opened the developer can edit in the XML editor.
The reason for having it as ws61-sun-web.xml in IDE is to avoid the clash between sun-web.xml of Appserver8.1 which is J2EE1.4 based whereas Webserver6.1 Web container is J2EE1.3 based.
It should be okay to use any service pack of Webserver6.1 with JSE8
    Hope this helps

  • Even Sun MicroSystems Gets Nightmares

    Hi,
    Have a look here....
    http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jscreator/downloads/index.jsp
Get an advanced IDE ( JAVA CREATOR 2 ) for Java Solutions
absolutely free. It is developed almost identical to Visual Web
Developer ( VWD ), perhaps with more features. The only reason to
Create and distribute this IDE is a Biggest THREAT from Microsoft.
Even Microsoft is worried and working harder with Expression Tools
    Now...
SUN will never wish their developers should move around to
other community ( Language Preference), due to lack of support.
I dont think Sun has more developers than Asp/Php put
    togather.
Even with the little community, when compared to huge
Community holded by AdobeMacromedia, the Sun gets
    Nightmares...................................
WHILE....... DW8 is sleeping Silently, giving nigtmares to
developers and old loyal community waiting for answers
When will DW8 wake Up..... and answer once for all.? blessing
at least a nice sleep to developers.
    Thanks

    Totally Agreed.
But majority are still using DW8 as an IDE for programming
    also.
No Doubt DW8 is great when asp, php or Cfm is concerned, and
its perhaps the best solution around.
Its there since when asp was at peak
Sun has now a solution for Jsp.
Coldfusion does not have to worry with DW8 still around.
Asp.net 2.0 lovers are still trying to get accomodate with
    DW8 any how.
