I deleted a large file, emptied trash but recovered no space

I needed to restore a large file (about 70 Gb) from Time Capsule to my MBP but had only 36 Gb available. I deleted a 70 Gb file from the MBP but the free space available did not increase after I deleted the file (and emptied Trash). Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Try to see what hidden files or folders take up much space.
Perhaps you have installed programs that protects from permanently remove trash.
Open a terminal and type the command, after each line, press enter:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true
killall Finder
This command enables the display of hidden files on disk
Be careful not to delete the folder if you do not know their meaning.
The reverse is
defaults delete com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles
killall Finder

• Deleted i photo file + empty trash !

i have deleted the I photo file from my document and empty the trash i'm trying to recover it back but could not find file with I photo name , i'm finding the pictures one by one , is it bossible ? time machine is not active

No you cannot recover the iPhoto Library. The Library is just a special kind of folder containing thousands of other files and folders, all linked by a couple of database files.
The best you can hope to do is to recover the individual files and then start over from scratch.
Mny of the files may have the same name. Always chose to recover the largest size.
Of course, with a back up...

I'm a new Apple user - when I deleted some large files the available space on the hard drive in the activity monitor

Open the Finder.
From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click View > Show Status Bar
You should now see the the free space available at the bottom of any Finder window and that should change after you empty the Trash.

• If you delete a large file from the mac hard drive does it also remove it from time machine on external hard drive

if you delete a large file from the mac hard drive does it also delete it from time machine on the external hard drive ?

As the others say, no, the backup copy won't be deleted immediately, but it will eventually.
If you want to delete all backups of a selected item, such as for space or security reasons, see #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

can't sync my ipad with itunes!i deleted "SC info"file and tried but it's not working!!it continously prompts me to authorize my computer!please help me out?

I'm having the same problem with my 4S. I have to constantly reboot my iMac or turn off my phone a few times to get it to sync. Before when I had 5.1.1 everything seemed to work just fine. I'm sure its a bug......
Both my ipads running 5.1.1 have zero issues syncing via wifi or directly plugged in.

If it's not a jpeg or PDF, you can't download it on the iPad.

• I am getting disc full messages on my Mac, unable to empty trash because not enough space, how do I proceed or do I need to increase my 4gig of memory

I am getting disc full messages on my Mac, unable to empty trash because not enough space, how do I proceed or do I need to increase my 4gig of memory in which case how do I go about this process.

You are confusing RAM (Random Access Memory) with hard drive data storage space.
Your hard drive storage is getting too full if you can't empty your Mac's main trash.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
( as you mentioned, you can't empty this as your hard drive is too full.)
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
Good Luck!

• I accidently put vr files in trash but did not delete, now stuck on grey screen after battery dying! Help

I am not very tech savvy but recently used a program that tells you what programs and files are using up large amounts of space on your computer I think it was called disc utility maybe. I deleted a whole bunch of things but accidently deleted a folder called vr, I realised I made a mistake and went to remove it from the trash when my laptop died, now it won't turn on past the grey screen with the apple logo!
I didn't delete the files they are just sitting in the trash. Is there anything I am able to do? I don't have any install discs or anything or wifi at my house or have any computer knowledge really. Please help!

Thank you! But do you think that a defective cable would cause it to not boot the cd now as well as the HD errors?
Also, this is kind of embarrassing, but if my trackpad happened to be broken to where I couldn't click it (broke a while back, but I use an external mouse so it never really bothered me) can I hold down the mouse button on my external mouse at startup to eject the cd or does it have to be the trackpad. If not, is there another way I can eject the cd?
Thanks again!

• Disk utility to prevent the recover of deleted files / empty trash securely

I just used the disk utility to prevent the recover of deleted files...
It created a recovery folder which I tried to empty trash securely...i the got a message saying there are some locked items and I responded to remove all items...
It would not let me do that the file stayed in the trash until I changed the setting and just emptied the trash the conventional way..
Can anyone tell me why that is happening???

Disk Drill, and all other file recovery apps for the Mac will recover every deleted file it can find on the drive. However, it should not have been at all possible to recover the ones you deleted with Secure Empty Trash. All files currently in the trash have every bit of their data overwritten 7 times with random data.
Were these part of what was recovered? Or just other normally deleted items?

• Delete only one file from Trash

Hello There,
I do not want to empty my entire Trash folder but only some files which i know I am not going to use it. Is there a way to delete only selected files and not just empty trash...
Thanks in advance for the help..
NA

nAyer,
When I place files in the Trash, I expect that they will be deleted. IMHO Trash is not a good place to store files that I may have second thoughts about eliminating.
I have created a folder which I named "B4 Trash," and placed it on my Desktop. If I really want to throw something away, I put it in the Trash and empty the Trash. If I am not sure about deletion, I place it in B4 Trash and get rid of it at my leisure.
Why not drag all of the files in Trash to a folder you create on your Desktop called B4 Trash, and then drag the files you really want to get rid of back to the Trash. Then empty the Trash.
;~)

• Trashcan not allowing me to delete a large file

I try to delete a big avi file I have on my MacBook pro and all i get is
"The operation cannot be completed because the item ".avi" is in use.
But it's not, no applications are opened that are using it, not even the preview in finder.
now my trashcan says that I cannot open it because items are being deleted.
what do I do? I have hardly any room left on my Macintosh HD
thanks

OK, try this. Restart in single-user mode - hold down the command and S keys when the screen goes black. You'll see a text prompt. Type these lines, hitting the return key after each one. Pay careful attention to spaces. Replace YOURUSER by your short user name ie the name of your home folder, eg "jsmith").

mount -uw /
cd /Users/YOURUSER
rm -rf .Trash
reboot

If you see any messages at all after any of the lines, make a note of them, stop, and post back here - none of the lines should result in any message. When you restart, you'll have an empty trash folder.
