I deleted music in the iTunes app but the files are still in the iTunes Media folder

Hi everyone,
I am doing my best to free up some HD space and decided to get rid of some of my music library in iTunes. For the record, my iTunes content is accessed from an external HD. My goal is to move the library back to my Mac's HD instead of the external because I don't want to use the external for anything by backups. (I have to get rid of some content in order for the library to fit on my Mac's smaller HD)
I went into the iTunes app and deleted everything I was no longer interested and managed to get my library down to about 50GBs. I moved the files to the trash and did not choose "keep files". Unfortunately, when I looked at the iTunes Media folder on my external HD, the albums I've deleted in the app are still there. That folder is about 80GBs.
Ultimately, I want what's in my iTunes Media folder to reflect what I've narrowed down in the App's library. Im trying to avoid deleted everything again manually in the media folder on my external as it is a pain.
Any help/suggestions?

Exact same problem even though I selected 'move to thrash option'. Maybe it was because I was using screen sharing to another mac on a LAN but can't see how this would make a difference.

  • ITunes library not available but library files are still stored on computer

My iTunes has been acting up since day one when it claimed that i was using a different computer after an update but now it wont let me access my iTunes library. Nothing is there - no purchased history, no music library, nothing.
I'm logged in using my usual account details and up to the other day everything was fine - i watched a film on iTunes, turned off my PC and then nothing was there anymore.
I checked my documents folder and all the files are still in there, in fact i can double click on them and they independently load up iTunes and then run but still arent listed in my library. I put another cd on today, rebooted the PC and the cd isn't listed either but is still in the correct folder on the hard drive.
Am i doing something really stupid or is this another quirk???

Hm ... I guess I can't edit the post above. Anyway, I seem to have solved it by ...
    Quitting iTunes.
Going into Home / Music / iTunes, and renaming the file "iTunes Library.itl" to "iTunes Library (corrupt).itl".
Entering Time Machine, and restoring the "iTunes Library.itl" file from a few days ago. I went back two days, which seemed far enough back to be "before" the problem but not far enough back to have trouble with recent acquisitions.
Re-opening iTunes - and everything seemed to be back in order.
So that's fine for now. We'll see if the solution is stable.
Very, very tentative assignment of blame: I believe iTunes crashed earlier today after I'd synced photos from my iPhone to iPhoto, and then iTunes crashed while iPhoto was closing (and taking its sweet time doing so). If that was indeed the case, that's at least the second time in the past couple of months that trying to sync iPhone photos to iPhoto has caused me significant problems. (The last time led to 80% of my iPhone suddenly being occupied by "Other", and a full restore of the darn thing.)

  • How can I restore my music to my itunes media folder?

I added windows 7 to my computer and I had to redownload itunes when I did i went to put the songs back on my ipod and it couldn't find the files in the media folder

So installing Windows 7 erased all of your user data?  I guess the iTunes folder you have now must be from reinstalling iTunes.  However,
I tried to copy all the song showing up in my iTunes libraray
I don't understand why and how the names of all of your old songs are still showing up in your iTunes library, if your user data was erased.  That means the iTunes Library.xml file from before is still there, in the iTunes folder, even if the actual song files have disappeared (or are no longer where they used to be).
Maybe they got moved...  Try noting the name of one of the songs you previous had in your iTunes folder, or the name of an artist or album.  Use Windows to search your hard drive volume on that name.  If you were using the default settings for iTunes, the song files should have been saved as the name of the songs in folders that are the names of the artists and albums.  If a general search shows those files or folders, you may have found where ALL of your songs got moved.
Songs purchased from the iTunes Store can be re-downloaded from the iTunes Store by logging into your iTunes Store account and going to the Purchased screen.  You can also transfer songs purchased by you from the iTunes Store, from iPod to computer (the command is in the menu bar under iTunes).  You cannot transfer other songs files from iPod to computer using iTunes, but there are third-party methods and utilities that will allow transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.

  • HT4527 I want to move my music onto my computer, I have music stored on my laptop not in itunes, how do i put it into an itunes media folder and consolidate it without itunes?

Basically I didnt have enough room to consolidate my itunes libary on my C drive, I moved them to my D, they then were no longer in my itunes libary, I moved them back but the songs are still no longer in my libary. This is not a major issue, the problem is getting all my music into a itunes media folder and then consolidating it without the use of iTunes.

Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
    Launch iTunes.
That is all you need to do.

Solved! Music was in Itunes folder but not in Media folder within that. It doesn't seem like a very user friendly system so far!

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    Missing tracks
Typically this can happen because a file or folder is accidentally shunted to the wrong location. iTunes can also get confused if it expects to be talking to an external drive which isn't there. If will often reset the default media folder location and may have trouble finding files in the old folders.
Select one of your tracks that is missing in action. Press CTRL-I to Get Info. Cancel when asked to try to locate the file, then look at the location given on the summary tab. This where iTunes thinks the file ought to be? Now find out where it actually is. Post back the two locations for comparison. I should be able to give you some steps to reconnect everything once I can determine which of the things that might have gone wrong is most likely in your case.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Can i delet music from my itunes but not from my ipod 120gb ipod

is there any way to delet music from my itunes library without the next time i attach my ipod 120gb it deleting it from my ipod because i have just run out of space on my hard drive and need to clear some space to put more music on my ipod. can any one help me?

Yes, however it's not necessarily a good idea to have the iPod holding the only copy of your media. It can become corrupt in which case it should be restored which involves deleting & replacing the contents. It may also easily be damaged, lost or stolen.
With this in mind, if you only delete media for which you have suitable backups, there are two possible apporaches. First you can switch to manually managing your music. Once you have transfered a file to the iPod you can delete the original from iTunes & your hard drive. There are certain benefits from automatic sysncing however which can be maintained with a different approach. You can delete original material from your hard-drive, leaving the entry in iTunes alone. When you come to sync iTunes will issue an error message to the effect that it cannot sync the missing files, *but it will not remove the exisitng copy on the iPod*. You can also suppress this error message.
In the long run however I would recommend that if space is becoming an issue you purchase an external drive and move your libray out to it. These are very affordable and would provide space to backup other important documents.

You have data corruption.  restore your phone and set it up as a new device.  Not from backup

Adding media directly to the media folder does not make it appear in the library.  iTunes doesn't really 'look' at that folder except to go to specific files when you call upon them from a library. You have to drag new content to each user's library, that is assuming each user has their own library.

  • Accidentally deleted iTunes, is there anyway I can download it again and have it just back up my iPod instead of clearing it of all data? All of iTunes files are still on my computer, but the actual program got deleted.

I was trying to clear space on my C drive and decided to delete programs that I didn't use or that I didn't recognize. (Bad idea, I know that now.) Anyways, accidentally deleted a program that iTunes needed to run and the computer said it would undo the uninstall and restart to fix the problem but when it restarted iTunes was gone. So my question is, after I download iTunes again, is there a way I can just backup my iPod to it's last sync (which was coincidentally right before I accidentally deleted iTunes) instead it being cleared of all its data? All of iTunes' files are still on my computer except the actual program itself.

    Hi, InsaneCharlie.
Thanks for the question.  I see you have uninstalled iTunes and want this program back.  Start with completely uninstalling iTunes if present and all of it's components in the order specified in the article below.  Once this is done, download and install iTunes.  If none of your data was modified in the iTunes media folder, then your data should be present upon installation.
