I deleted my contact cards on my macbook and totally forgot I was clearing from my phone until too late. Can I go back to a certain date and retrieve from icloud say a week ago or something? Dang this is frustrating...the cloud is stormy one for me right now.

You can't restore iCloud, but if you have an iCloud backup of your phone you could try restoring to the backup. This may recover your contacts, although it isn't always successful when it comes to contacts.

Signing out will not delete them from iCloud. Do it and read the message. It will give you the option to store address book contacts locally or just in iCloud. It will tell you that they will be available in iCloud when you sign back in.
In Addition, signing your mac out of iCloud does not sign your other devices out of iCloud. Any info in iCloud will still be available to other devices.

Good to know that, but what can I do to get the mail and contacts downloaded from Icloud onto my Iphone? I am told that the password needs to be reset and I have erased and reset it 3x's already? I don't believe there's much you can do about it...have a look at the "More Like This" pane on the right side of this page.
One way though to eliminate the issue (although not a very good way) is to restore the phone as new.

Did you have time machine set up? Maybe you can retrieve them from a backup.
Oh... and if your mail provider is someone like Google, They may be sitting in your all mail folder on the server.

If you have no backups, and data has been lost, then it's lost forever. The rest of your data will inevitably follow if you don't back up.

By deleting contacts that are in the "icloud" section of the contacts, you have deleted them from icloud. Hence, if the phone syncs with icloud, they will be deleted from the phone.
If that happens the only way to get the contacts back is to restore the contact files from a backup of your MAC (look in Time Machine). Backups on icloud do not include contacts, since contacts are already stored in their own icloud database, which unfortunately you deleted.

No don't restore your iphone. I've done that several times & it has never worked. -I still have deleted contacts in my iphone texts. *However if you do restore it you will not lose all your data, pics, text messages etc if you backup in iCloud. I JUST figured it out!! :))). Remove the contact from recents.
Start a text. You should see the deleted contact. All the way to the right of the name is a symbol. The symbol is a circle with "i" in the middle. Click that symbol then in red lettering click "remove from recents".

I'm new to using Time Machine - I'm making my first backup right now - and I have a few concerns.
So let's say my precious photos are taking up most of my Mac's hard drive space. I back them up with Time Machine on an external hard drive. After that, I want to delete my photos from my Mac because I want more space and my photos are now stored in the external hard drive. I have a few questions about that.
First, does Time Machine's backup system follow the same concept as having extra storage (so would this be a reasonable decision to make)?
Second, if it does, then could I access/open these photos from Time Machine's backup anytime I want?
Third, would I need to use the restore backup function of Time Machine every time I want to open my photos are there alternative ways of accessing my photos, like through opening directory paths to the photos?
Lastly, when the external hard drive becomes full and Time Machine wants to delete my oldest backup files, what can I do to ensure that these photos will never get deleted unless I manually do it? Like, is there a way to lock and secure these files? Or, is it like if these photos are the only copies saved in the backup, I can rest assure that Time Machine will never delete them?

1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.
2: Something happens to the TM drive, loss, theft, dropped, power surge, etc., you lose both backups.

The OVI suite needs to be improved in one area and that is to inform us users where it's deleting contacts.
I had to reset my N8 because it wouldn't pair with any bluetooh devices including a brand new nokia BH 609. Then I restore the phone and sync it without a problem, I make the mistake of choosing to "save contacts on the phone" when syncing for the first time.
Now I have duplicates of everything in Outlook which I spend 1 hour deleting.
Syncing seems to have restored to normal.
5 days later I'm syncing and it deletes 160 contacts from outlook!!
Why can we not set it so that Ovi suite lets you know where it's deleting from.
This is business critical and phones and suites are supposed to help us do our jobs and make us more effecient. My problems with my N8 are really taking a drain on my time and busi schedule to the point where I'll probably not buy a smart phone again for a while I'm so fed up.
Please consider this idea of letting the user know where contacts are being deleted so perhaps we may prevent a situation like this.
There's also another sync issue with Calendar, if I delete something in outlook the phone doesn't delete it yadda yadda. Not as importat of course.
