I deleted my time machine app by mistake before I could even run it

I dragged my time machine to the desktop by mistake, deleted it. (Just turned mac user) I went to access it and saw it was gone. i emptied my trash and never had a time machine backup. Can someone tell me how to reinstall time machine without reinstalling leopard?

You can get a copy of the Time Machine application from the Applications folder of another Leopard computer. If you are near an Apple store, make an appointment at the Genius Bar (i.e., go to www.apple.com, search for your nearest store, and the web page for the store will have the online stuff for reserving a time at that store) and they can do it for you.
If you have a friend with a Leopard computer, you can boot his computer in "Target" mode (hold the "t" key while rebooting) and then connect his computer to yours via a firewire cable. His hard drive will then show up as an external drive on your computer. Navigate to his Applications folder, and you will be able to make a copy of his Time Machine application on your computer. You will likely need your Administrator account name and password, and his as well.
By the way, it is generally a bad idea to move Applications to other locations in your Mac. Updates to the applications may not find them to update them later. If you move one by accident, you can safely just move it back.

Click the Apple menu at the left end of your menubar. Select "About this Mac." You will get a window like this:
Your Mac OS version is indicates in the image by the upper red arrow. While you are there, please tell us what information you find for "Processor," where the lower red arrow is pointing.

  • Corrupted Time Machine app on Mountain Lion 10.8.4

I seem to have a corrupted Time Machine app on my Macbook Pro, running 10.8.4
The problem first started when I used a guide to modify the backup intervals - editing a text file to change the amount of seconds in between the automatic backups (changing it to every 24 hours rather than one hour).
That worked fine for a couple months, but then I started getting an error saying that the backup was too large for the destionation disk. I spent ages trying to resolve this, formatted my external hard drive again, and tried to start a new backup. However I still kept getting the error that the Time Machine backup was too large. I double checked that I had excluded the right files, and that it was actually able to fit on the external HDD.
After giving up trying to fix the problem with TM, I deleted the app, and went into the system files and deleted all (I think) of the files relating to TM. I then opened the Mountain Lion installer package with Pacifist, and extracted all the TM files into their default location.
Now the problem is that TM (in the preferecnes pane) will freeze when I try to change the options, and it won't let me check "Show Time Machine in menu bar". It also still tells me that the backup is too large when it automatically tries to backup.
Is there any way to completely reinstall just TM without having to reinsall all the system files on the OS?
    Any help would be appreciated!

No, and you need to make sure that you completely removed the third-party hack you installed, by following the developer's instructions.

  • I accidentally erased the Time Machine app

I thought I was deleting a shortcut, and ended up deleting the entire app itself. Can I reinstall it by reinstalling the Snow Leopard upgrade or will I have to reinstall Leopard, then Snow Leopard?
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

no need to reinstall the whole SL. you can pull Time Machine.app from the SL install disk using Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/
you'll have to manually reinstall 10.6.2 combo update to bring it up to its current version.

  • I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.

I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.  The file is about 400GB and my MacBook has been trying to delete it for 5h now. It still says "deleting" but has not given me a "time remaining" yet. Any idea of what I could do????

You should not attempt to delete backups using the Finder. The result can be a corrupted backup.
I recommend you let it complete, no matter how long it takes. That could be days, if your TC is connected via wireless.
It is not necessary to delete backups, since Time Machine will delete old backups some time after they have been deleted from your source volume. For more information read Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini's explanation here: Should I delete old backups? If so, How?

  • Can't Completely Delete a Time Machine Backup

How do I completely delete a Time Machine Backup? In Snow Lepord I had no problem with deleting a Time Machine Backup. I back up my HHD on a external HHD. Since using Time Machine with Lion the back ups are not being fully deleted. My trash can each time I connect my external HHD is displaying deleted files. When I go to delete from trash I am told there are locked items. So I select the option to delete locked items, hear the deleted trash can sound but the trash can still indicates the files haven't been perminetly deleted yet. What is my problem here?

None of that worked. I used the Terminal method. No good.
What does "no good" mean?  What happened, or didn't happen?  That should empty the trash on the disk. As mentioned, it may take a long time, if there's lots of files there.
Repairing will be no good to be cause my external HD contains everything on one partition. The backups are not on there own partition like that site assumes. Repairing did no good.
Do you mean you didn't try it?  If so, try it.  It may or may not be able to repair them, but it's worth a try.

  • Can't open Time Machine.app

I cant open the Time Machine app to make a restore. I don't get any error messages or see anything in the console?
    (Repaired permissions etc.)

This is very strange. I'm not sure what could be causing it in one user account and not any other. Try emptying out the entire contents of home/Library/Preferences and home/Library/Caches, and see if it launches then.

  • Accidentally I have deleted my Time Machine Backup but deleted files are in the Trash !

    Hi Folks,
Accidentally deleted my Time Machine backkups but all files are in the Trash. I am copying my files from Trash folder to another Portable Drive just incase I will not be able to restore my files as Put Back is not working because seems Time Machine backups is a part large database.
Is there anyway I can restore the files to Time Machine again? If there is, could you please tell me step by step ! If there is not any procedures, please advise me what should I do in this stage?
    Thanks in advance.

  • I accidentally deleted my time machine backup

I accidentally deleted my time machine backup file (I only had made one). Can anyone tell me how do I recover it? I don´t see it in my time machine travel window

Data Recovery from time machine is something tough job even the best data recovery software can not do so because the complex structue in time machine is not understood by any data recovery software which Apple uses. Time Machine puts your backup in a sparse bundle disk image (backups.backupdb). However you can try some data recovery software which may recover someting from your trash. There are software having demo version which can show you the recovered files on preview if you found any of your important file then there is a good chance to recover your data and your good Luck..REMEMBER FIRST TRY THEN BUY

Hi, please open the 3-bar menu > Customize, and if you can see the Home icon, you can drag it to a location of your choice > Exit Customize to save.
This [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-set-the-home-page How to set the home page] article may also be of help.

  • HT201250 Time Machine App does not start under OS X Lion

I tried to restore an item from my back-up, however the Time Machine App does not start.
I use the latest version of OS X Lion 10.7.5 (Build 11G63).
I used the work around by opening my back-up volume with the finder and copied the wanted item.
However, this is not the correct approach I think.
Does anybody have a solution to my problem?

Just the last addition to my question.
The modifications of the access rights took very, very long. In the end I cancelled the process.
Nevertheless, time machine now works correctly. As far as I can see it.
If annybody runs into similar problems. The solution is I think just to modify the access rights on the back-up volume to read and write access for everyone.
Probably OS X Lion added an undocumented feature to the time machine.

  • Time Machine Error:  "The backup disk image could not be created."  Help.

I have two Macbook Pro's. One is able to backup to the Time Capsule with no problems. The other connects just fine to Airport Utility, but I get the following error after I attempt to backup: Time Machine Error: "The backup disk image could not be created."
I have reset the Time Capsule several times, so that is not the fix.
The first thing I see when attempting to open Time Machine is the following message: :The storage location for Time Machine Backups can't be found." It gives me the option to setup the Time Capsule, which I select. The next thing I select is to Change Disk. The window that opens has the Icon with Three people on it. The name of that Icon is The Moreman Time Capsule. I select it, and enter the password I created. I then choose to Backup. Then I choose to backup now. That is when I get the error: Time Machine Error: "The backup disk image could not be created."
Any ideas? Has anyone encountered this problem?

You have to delete the .dmg file and start over. This happened to me 3 times already, I finally switched to Déjà Vu, works perfect and only once a day instead of 24 times a day.

  • Deleted a Time Machine file.  Was that a mistake?

Without going into the "whys" of why I did it, I deleted my two oldest Time Machine backup files to free up some disk space. Then I got concerned that I had made a mistake since I understand that TM does incremental backups and maybe these had key system files that don't change.
Plus, I thought maybe there is some index that tracks stuff that I might have messed up. So I was dumb to do it before checking. OK. Got it.
I tried to copy them back from Trash but got a message that said I could not.
My question is...did I make a mistake or is TM OK? The files were backups from over a year ago. If I did create a problem, what do I do to recover?
    Thanks in advance.

It's hard to tell. TM may be smart enough to perform a deep traversal and replace what was deleted with new versions, but certainly anything kept in those older backups is now gone. If there were older system files this could cause problems if you tried to perform a complete system restore from the TM backup. If TM complains during the next attempted backup, then you may be forced to erase the backup drive and start over.
It may help to see the following:
About TM "Backup Drive is Full" Alert
TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Data are deleted to make space for a new backup, but if TM is unable to delete enough files to free up space for the new backup, then you will get a disk full error. Normal thinning during a backup occurs during TM's periodic weekly and monthly consolidation backups. Note, that on a TC the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from your view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.
It's quite easy to run out of backup space. A TM backup drive should be at least twice the capacity of the drive(s) backed up. If you are forced to delete files from a TM backup then use the TM application to do so rather than deleting anything from the backup drive directly. TM does not maintain a separate index but uses multiple dated folders to keep track of prior backups. If you are running short of space on the backup drive, then your backup drive is too small and should be replaced by a bigger capacity drive.

  • I am having a problem with Time Machine, the error msg is "Time Machine.app can't be modified or deleted because it is required by MacOsX". It was working and now it is not.

Should have added that I am trying to retrieve back-up images.
