I did a dumb thing.

I was deleting some stuff out of my Purchased playlist and I ended up accidentally deleting the Purchased playlist itself. Is there any way at all to restore it?? I didn't delete my purchased music (it's still in my library) but this was definitely my most used playlist. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

Your purchased playlist is simply a smart playlist. You can rebuild it by using a smart playlist with the criteria, "kind contains protected AAC". Hope this helps.

  • [SOLVED] I did a dumb thing... (chmod/chown)

Hi all, hope this is the right section,
So I decided that I was tired of authenticating when I wanted to change some files for my SLiM theme, and decided to add permissions to my user.. on the entire share folder. Well, here's what I ran:
    [naut@arch /usr]$ sudo chown -Rv root:naut share/ && sudo chmod -Rv 664 share/
Yep. So after I did that I noticed that xfce stopped working properly; all of my icons, panels, etc, were showing as follows: ▖▖▖▖▖▖▖▖▖▖
I immediately tried to revert the change my chowning back to root:root, and setting most files back to 644, but it had no effect. I logged out and logged back in to see if it was a temporary thing, but when I logged back in, even more items were showing ▖▖▖▖▖▖▖▖▖▖. I switched to another tty and chmoded all of /usr/share to 777... now I know that's generally a bad idea but when I logged back in, I did see that it at least went back to normal functionality.
So my question becomes, how can I know what dirs/files need what permissions? I'd like to get it back to where I have the least permission required for everything to work properly.

644 broke things because directories need execute permissions to be traversable.
    Unfortunately, /usr/share is a grab-bag of permissions:
    # find /usr/share -type f -exec ls -l {} + | cut -d ' ' -f 1 | sort | uniq -c
    2879 -r--r--r--
    4 -r-xr-xr-x
    49229 -rw-r--r--
    12 -rw-r-xr--
    143 -rw-rw-r--
    277 -rwxr-xr-x
    3 -rwxrwxr-x
You'd probably be safe enough to set all files to 644 and all directories to 755, but you might want to check with pacman -Qkk and reinstall any packages that complain about permissions mismatches. This won't fix everything though, as some packages still pre-date MTREE files.

  • I upgraded to iOS 7 and did a dumb thing

I upgraded to iOS 7. When asked to type in a 4-didit, I blithly did, not realizing what I was really doing. Later when I wanted to use the phone, it asked me for the code, which I had completely forgotten. I have tried to correct this by following Apple's various suggestions on how to change Apple ID. But no help on recoving the passcode was available. I have tried so many times that I now get the Phone is Disabled message. What can I do? I never used a passcode on any of my earlier iOS.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • I did a dumb thing - ipod froze, won't reset!

Well, when my ipod was plugged in to my pc... I unplugged it thinking it wasn't connected since it didn't show up on computer. But it turned out that it was still connected and had the "Do not disconnect" sign on the ipod screen. Now its just stuck on that screen. I can't reset it or anything.. its just froze. When i press buttons the backlight still comes on and when I put it on hold the lock sign comes up, but other then that... it won't do anything else.
    I need help desperately!

    Three explanations for this one:
One, the screen is broken. (Lowest chance)
Two, the iPod is in DESPERATE need of service (but what good will that do?)
Three, the hard drive is frozen. (see number two)
    This is a tough one...

  • During a demo today could not use Messages for video chat or screen share - what dumb thing was I doing wrong?

I was giving a demo / class today for some people in a volunteer group I work for. They all got new MacBook Airs or MacBook Pros, and I got a MacBook Pro because I am going to be going into explain how to use them.
Most everythng went well, but one really cool thing I do all the time from home on my iMac I couldn't get to work. That part of the lesson was a disaster, though fortunately everything else went well.
I'd like to figure out what dumb thing I was doing wrong so I can show them next week.
I know we have to sign in with AOL accounts for screen sharing to work in Messages. So first I had everybody sign up for a free AOL account. That went fine.
Then we all logged in using our accounts. That went fine for everybody except one person. We could all see each other online, with little video cameras next to our names in the Buddy List. One person never showed up anywhere for some reason.
But we could not do either video chats or successfully request to share other peoples' screens, which I do all the time at home to help other people with their Macs.
One person could not even see any requests from me pop up. One person could see my requests come in and accepted them, but nothing happened after that.
Ordinary message chats were working ok.
    Things I already thought of:
    1. Perhaps the wi-fi in the bulding was blocking some ports? Just in case, I turned on mobile hotspot (tethering) on my iPhone 5 and had everybody connect to my network. But the results were the same, so it wasn't that.
    2. I wasn't sure it mattered, but in Settings > Sharing I made sure that everbody had screen sharing turned on. And just in case, even though I don't have this set from home, I further made sure everybody had "anyone may request to control the screen" checked.
While I could do local network sharing of screens (via the Devices list in the Finder side panel), I couldn't for the life of me get it to work with Messages. But I've been doing this for years from home to help my sister and other people across town with their Mac by doing screen sharing this way and taking over their screen.
It must be something dumb I'm overlooking. Anybody know what it is?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Problem solved, finally, by AppleCare support!
I gave up trying to reach the "English support line" guy located in Manila and decided to insist on plain old Japanese support here in Tokyo and explained the problem from scratch.
First we tried all the usual suspects, but nothing we did could get it to work. Then we did an ARA (Apple Remote Access) support session. This was the first time I ever did this. Quite cool, and very useful.
At first we still could not figure out what was wrong, but finally isolated the problem to the way my AOL account name was entered.
When I added the AOL account to my Messages app, all I did was enter my username part. I didn't add the @aol.com part, because I never did that on my iMac. However, Messages kept on automatically adding "@aol.com" to the end of the AIM account name.
The Apple tech person got me to try once again to get rid of the @aol.com part of the account name. We:
    1. Disabled the account.
    2. Manually deleted the @aol.com, leaving just my AIM name.
    3. Restarted my MacBook Pro (very quick, by the way, and also immediately brought back his ARA session).
This time the @aol.com part remained gone, and I was able to test connecting to my iMac, which has a different AIM account set. It worked!
I was able to do screen sharing via Messages! And also do video chat via Messages. Yay!
So much thanks to Watabe-san at Apple support. The people I am teaching will be happy to see this working on Sunday, because it really is a very useful tool for assisting people remotely.

    Resetting the Logic Board
Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a
unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure
    before replacing any modules.
    1 Unplug the computer.
2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
3 Open the side access panel.
4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.

Yes, the old album art view is gone, bu you can see the album art for a song that's playing by clicking on the art image and it will open a bigger view.
Everything else in your post is a waste. I'm not going to spend time reading it. If - and I repeat if, you have a question on how to get the best out of the new look iTunes, post it. But don't spend your time in long rambling negative rants.

If you are in Hong Kong, go to Digital Trade, 1/F, Sincere Plaza, Argyle Street, and it will cost you 120-150HKD, but before you go check that your power button and home button are working correctly, if not press as hard as you can, hope this will help.

Did all these things mentioned in this article, even did a system reset including erase data and other settings. iOS is up to date, still the iPad 2 display is not rotating.
This happened first a couple of weeks before, then I did a reset and it worked. Then after 2-3 days it happened again, I updated the iOS and it worked after that. Next time it happened, I tried all possible methods, including switching to software - rotation lock on/off. The hardware when turns to off/on, shows the correct icon on the screen of the lock and unlocked state. But the rotation is not happening.

    Just check again.
If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that doesn't do it, double tap the home button and swipe to the right and look for the lock icon all the way to the left.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If the iPad screen still will not rotate - turn it over and gently tap it on the back a couple of times - but gently tap it. Make sure that the screen is protected.
