I did Archive & Install with "preserve users", why do I now have NO users?

After a hard crash on my mom's PowerBook G4 (running 10.4.11) I eventually did an OS 10.4 Archive & Install with "preserve users". I now have NO users, not even an administrator, what should I do?  The only indication I see that anything was remembered is the login screen does say:
Mac OS X
Jane Brown's Computer
(But as I recall, there's a bug that sometimes that personalized text sticks around forever once it's set the first time in the OS)
None of the login names or passwords I remember work. I checked using a boot DVD with the "Reset Password" utility, but the only user it sees is "System Administrator (root)".
I can think of 2 options from here, but I'd like advice, or another option. One...I could somehow force Setup Assistant to run (how?), create a new administrator, and then do...some process to get back the one user setup I care about (my mom...her files, etc)?
Or two...I'm not a COMPLETE idiot with Unix (but close)...could I find an old, working Netinfo db and restore it and fix things that way?  I did that years ago, following instructions. I don't know if there is a working Netinfo around though.  In single-user mode I tried "ls" while in /var/backups/ and saw nothing at all.
The history of how/why I did the Install:
My mom's system freaked-out and crashed hard during normal operation (she was just launching AppleWorks)...subsequently all attempts to boot left it at a completely black screen with a single white cursor block in the upper left. No prompt though, and unresponsive to anything I typed, so I wasn't in a normal Darwin. The only way it could be powered-down was to hold down the power key for 10 seconds.
I tried various things...reset PRAM, used "Disk Utility" from a boot DVD (it found no disk problems...though Repair Permissions refused to run, it kept losing connection to the HD), Safe-Booting (which didn't work, it hung with a blue screen, gray Apple logo, no spinning gear), etc. Nothing worked. Booting in verbose mode did go part way, then it stopped with some kind of disk I/O complaint.  I forgot to write it down. My guess, since disk repair found no disk problem, that an OS file was corrupt, and trying to read that resulted in an I/O error.
So I did an Archive & Install with "preserve users".  All seemed to go ok. Until I tried to login.

I followed the steps, the new accounts are there, but they aren't working properly. The primary account worked ok once.
Based on the behavior of 2 accounts (primary admin, + my mom's), even under Safe Boot, it seems like there's something that's failing during login that causes all attempts to login to succeed partway, then crash, and throw me back to re-login.
What happened: I had reset the Netinfo, & created a first admin matching before. After a long time, I got a normal desktop (& it had the desktop icons & Dock layout of the previous primary account).  I created the next 3 users (there were no gaps), and then set it to auto-login to my mom (standard user).
If I Safe Boot so I can try logging-in as the original admin, I get a menubar, a customized Dock (with an odd, empty white square in place of one of the icons), and a spinning beachball against an empty desktop for a while, then it drops me back to the login screen. Same thing if I try my mom's account while Safe Booted.
I have a 2nd admin account, if I try that while Safe Booted, I get a menubar, empty desktop, and an endless spinning beachball. I have to hold down the power key to shutdown.
I tried holding the shift key immediately after login (disable startup items) to see if that helps, but it didn't. Doesn't even seem to work right, because when I boot normally to auto-login to my mom's account, even with shift, her startup item is still launching (a simple app that timestamps a file).
If I don't Safe Boot...it does auto-login to her account, I get a beachball, it slowly builds her entire desktop back just the way it used to be (desktop icons, customized Dock)...then it crashes to a blank blue login type screen and tries all over again, endlessly trying to login, crash, try again. I have to use the power key to force a shutdown.
Force Quit (via the keyboard) never helps in any of the situations, I get no popup window.
I did use Disk Utility again to see if it repaired anything, but all it fixed were a few permissions, which didn't change anything.
What next? What would you suggest now?  They're almost working. Is there a log I can examine in single-user mode that would tell me what's failing during login? Should I reset the Netinfo db again and re-create users? Do I need to install again? Preserving or not-preserving users?

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

    Yes
Put all the music on one computer, make sure it is authorized for all accounts, sync.

    HI Frostyfrog
CHeck out iTunes Match which has an annual fee of £21 or thereabouts. You can store a maximum of 25,000 songs there and they all become available on your other kit, iPhone, iPad and iPod. I know it works as I have over 23000 songs uploaded of which only a few we're bought through iTunes.
it works by comparing your music to the whole iTunes music dadata base so you access the same tunes that you could get from iTunes. If you have obscure stuff, it uploads your own music to the cloud as a copy.
I Find it incredible that on my iPhone with its 16gb memory I can view almost 200 gb of music (ie my 23000 songs) and play any of them. Anything I add to iTunes becomes available via the cloud fairly quickly from a few minutes or a little longer if adding a lot.
The first time you use it it will take quite a while to match your music if you have a lot, but after that it is all automatic. Read the stuff on the apple site. Your PC needs to be at least running Vista. I recommend it and at less than 50p a week it's good value.
    Good luck

  • My iPhone 4 has never backed up to anything, the account I started it with I never used. I now have a new icloud account, if I delete the old one will I lose my photos or will they still be on my phone?

My iPhone 4 has never backed up to anything, the account I started it with I never used so I was never able to verify it or anything. I now have a new icloud account and I want to backup my phone before I get a new one in a couple of days. If I delete the old account will I lose my photos or will they still be on my phone (remember they've never been backed up)? Thanks!

You cannot delete an Apple ID, you can just stop using it. If your photos are still on your phone now, then I suggest you do back them up. Transfer them from the phone into your iPhoto Library. iCloud only backs up your Camera Roll automatically. But the Camera Roll only contains new photos that were taken but not yet transferred using iTunes.

  • After attempting to sync my iphone contacts with my windows live contact i now have no contacts showing on my iphone

i was messing about with my itunes contacts and attempted to sync all my windows live contacts  with my iphone, i dont know what setting i have changed but i now have no contacts showing on my iphone, i have tried to restore my iphone but this failed.
    Cheers for your Help!

The sync process for contact info and calendar events is a bidirectional or true sync process. You can't transfer only contact info and calendar events available on your iPhone only to the supported application on your computer. Contact info and calendar events available in the supported address book and calendar app on your computer and contact info and calendar events available on your iPhone will be synced so the info available on both is identical.
If you have a MM account, you need to sync the supported address book on your computer with your MM online address book first. After confirming your MM online address book matches the supported address book on your computer, follow this by enabling over the air syncing for contact info with your MM account on your iPhone. This will erase all existing contact info on your iPhone and replace it with your MM online address book info, and the same for calendar events.
If you have contact info available on your iPhone that is not available with the supported address book on your computer, you need to sync your iPhone's address book with the supported address book on your computer via the iTunes sync process first. Follow this by syncing the supported address book on your computer with your MM online address book. After confirming the supported address book on your computer matches your MM online address book, enable over the air syncing for contact info with your MM account on your iPhone. After this, your iPhone's address book will be kept synchronized with your MM online address book which is kept synchronized with the supported address book on your computer and vice-versa.

  • After install with AD, user must have adminrights ...

    Hello
i made a working installation with active directory. the pc suite gets installed correctly.
if a user plug in the mobile phone for the first time, all drivers are getting installed except the modem driver. it needs admin rights for the installation, but i cannot go to every user and login with my admin for this driver installation.
is there any good solution , that the driver is getting installed, without login specially with an admin?
    cheers

    Hi,
    Please check registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CoDeviceInstallers -> {4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
There is text something like "NetCfgx.dll,ModemClassCoInstaller
setup\FxsOcm.dll,FaxModemCoClassInstaller". Make sure that there is carriage return before word "setup".
I found out that that registry entry was corrupted on my computer and that's why Windows did not find correct installation services.

  • Installing with DVD, even though I don't have a DVD drive?

Is there a way to work-around the fact that I don't have a DVD drive on my G4 to install Tiger from the DVD that I have on hand?
Just started a new job, and they have the Tiger DVD disks, but there's only one mac in the whole office that has a dvd drive. Yet, there are several with Tiger installed.
How did they do it? No one who was here during the installation is here now ... go figure.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to sound as if that were critical. I bet they have sound or recording software/hardware as the main concern like you do. A local user here has had problems moving some of his stuff (and recording from vinyl) with his OS X installations.
I think I may have been confused with your earlier post about the drive. There should be no problem going directly to 10.4 at all. I thought that you wanted to install an OS onto the DVD drive and it needed to be 10.2 or above. This looks like a balancing act: you need a suitable OS on the drive to put the OS on the computer; but you need a drive on the computer to put the OS on the drive.
A solution might be to find another computer with a DVD drive; or to go up in steps: Jaguar or Panther come on CDROM disks so could be installed on the computer then on the drive (or directly onto the drive without installing on the computer).
There was an exchange program to get Tiger on CDROMs but I am not sure if that is finished (or if there are any in Aus.).

  • 10.4.11 Install with two users working but one with a blue screen

On installation of 10.4.11 two of the users are working just fine but one give only a blue screen. My next thought is to try going back to 10.4 and doing an archive and install. Any other thoughts? Thanks.

If either good user account is an admin user, log into it, delete the bad user account, saving user data (that creates a /Users/Disabled Users/disk image), recreate the account, using the same username/password account, log into it, mount the disk image, and merge the data.

  • Clean Install With Custom User Id

    Hello
From experience I am aware of problems in our network when we have 2 users with accounts which have the same User Id. For this reason I have always tried to ensure each User on our network has a unique User Id.
I am upgrading several User's iMacs to Mountain Lion and I will format their drives and perform a clean install. Is it possible, using Terminal, to perform a clean install but specify a custom User Id?
    Many thanks.
    Chris

It would probably be easier to change your Apple ID password. This would allow you to continue downloading past iTunes/App Store purchases.
    Apple ID - Manage
Do you have a backup? If not, backup before doing anything because an erase and reinstall will cause you to lose all your data.
If your MacBook came with Mountain Lion pre-installed, you would have to purchase a copy from the App Store, but you can probably avoid that.
Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart) or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume. Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions. Then select the Erase tab. Format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Erase and then reinstall the OS.
    OS X Recovery
When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.

  • "EPSON Scanner" file installed with OS X - Why?

In /Library/Image Capture/Devices is an item named "EPSON Scanner"; its icon looks like a puzzle piece, with a camera on it. Get Info says it's an "Application (Universal)"; it's 6.3 MB in size. I've never owned an Epson scanner; this apparently came with OS X (10.4)? Do I need it for anything if I don't have an Epson scanner?

Hello Graham Rogers! I've enjoyed reading your online
Mac essays. Sorry to hear about the loss of your
    PowerBook.
Oh, gosh. Blush, blush. Thanks. Standby for some more news on the PowerBook theft.
I'm guessing that this is something that someone just
tossed in to OS X on the assumption that a lot of
people have Epson scanners. Like all those printer
drivers that I don't need and didn't install.
I am in two minds about these. Clearly, most of them we will not need, but there is no telling when we might need one. A simple case in point is when, in my office, the venerable HP DeskJet 920C packed up (for which I had not needed an extra driver) and a replacement Epson was wheeled in. Unlike my Windoze using colleagues, I just switched in an instant, no CDROM required.
So I tend to leave this stuff alone.
I prefer to keep my System installation trimmed down
Me too, and that is why I reinstall and choose not to have all the different language packs. That saves a fair amount of space.
These are, after all, personal computers.
