I did my first monitor analysis: Now what?

Hello everyone,
I'm a student film music composer and still very new to producing music, especially mixing. I'm using my fathers Alesis M1 passives and a QSC USA400 power amp in his studio; a converted garage thats been sound proofed into a very dead room (for pictures see: http://www.shopjt3.com/studiopicts.html). I've been generally unhappy with the way my music translates to other systems/environments, and am unsure how to fix this problem. Is it my monitors? Is it the room? Is it user error? I just dont know! For example, under the advice of a friend, I recently added my cheep home stereo subwoofer to my monitor chain, and was AMAZED at how much better my mixes became! I was no longer flying blind with low end frequencies, which in turn made my whole mixes less muddy! Seeing first hand the improvement this made, I'm wondering if the same thing will happen if I upgrade my monitors to a more "professional" set.
Hoping to gain more insight into my room/sound, I purchased the Alan Parsons monitor analysis package (pink noise test tones with DB monitor) and came up with some interesting results which I graphed here: http://www.shopjt3.com/images/monitor_analysis.jpg Note, there are 3 graphs: Alesis LRSub; Alesis L+R with no sub; and Sub only. My Monitors are 20 inches from walls. Distance between monitors is about 47 inches. Distance from monitor to my working position is about 27 inches.
I have no clue where to go from here. Are the dramatic changes in frequency information due to the monitors, the power amp, or my room? Should I add an EQ to adjust for this when mixing, and then take it off on the burn? Should I use this EQ to make my monitors as flat as possible? Would I be better off ditching the whole system for something like the Adams A7's + a Blue sky sub? I really have no clue what to do...why dont they teach this stuff in school?!
I write music for films as well as progressive rock. My goal is to get my stuff to translate as well as possible to other home stereos / TVs & movie theaters. I hope to eventually hire out my mixing / mastering, but dont have the budget to do so yet. Of course, the catch 22 is your music needs to sound professional in order to get the professional gigs to afford professional mixing help! Here is an example of my most recent film score: http://www.fieldsfaraway.com/final.html (some of you have already heard this). Does this sound professional? How well does it translate on your system? I'm working on another project now, and will post clips for comments soon.
Sorry for the long post, but I'm new to this stuff and really have no clue what to do. However, I am determined and willing to learn, and would appreciate any comments, questions, advice you're willing to share. Sorry this post isnt directly Logic related, but the best information I've found on the net has come from these forums.
Thank you in advance for your help and reply!

I just remember using $99 audio-technica headphones at my dorm to mix, and ALWAYS having my mixes turn out extremely muddy and dead sounding (because I couldn't hear any bass I would boost it up thus muddying my mix). Perhaps a quality headphone would do better? Would headphones be my main monitors, or just to check my mix?
$99 headphones are unlikely to be suitable. Decent (read: expensive!), open-backed cans are the way to go. Find a store that lets you try out the headphones - indeed take your old audio-technicas with your to compare - I think you'll be surprised at the difference.
any other suggestions? I've recently read that should never be perpendicular to a wall (which is where mine are now). Is this true? I've also read its best to have them as far away from wall as possible, yet I dont want my desk to be in the middle of the room (plus I've NEVER seen this in any studio pictures I've ever seen). But the bottom line is the sound, so I'm willing to do whats necessary.
That stuff you've read is not wrong but, as usual for this subject, it always "depends"
What's behind your speakers and how far they are away from the rear surface affects the sound considerably. Bass pretty much radiates in all directions - including to the rear, and it will refelect from the rear wall and back to you. What you hear is the direct sound and the reflected sound combined. This can result in a reduction of bass or an increase. If the distance is big enough your ears/brain are capable of identifying the different componants - or the reflection may be quiet enough not to matter if the distance is very big! In most real rooms this distance will be small and you hear the combined effect. The other walls affect things in the same way but the closer the wall the more serious the effect can be. Having said this the design of many speakers take this rear wall issue into account. There is often advice on speaker placement from the manufacturer for this reason. My Mackie speakers have a switch to set their location to "corner", "near wall" and "far from wall" - its essentially a bass lift eq (yes I know this kind contradicts the EQ advice - lets not go there for now .)
Often you have to experiement to find the best position for the speakers and it entirely depends on the model/make.
In general, with acoustics, anything symetrically shaped is not good. A rectangular room is better than a square for eg and even better is a room with non-parallel walls (like many top studios). Placing speakers non-symmetrically, such as one closer to the corner than the other can help sometimes as it makes the reflection patterns of sound more random. More random is a good thing. Having said this you can end up with one side sounding more bass-heavy than the other for eg and that is not desirable. Guess what?... experiment!
As a start point I'd suggest placing the speakers about 1 to 2 feet from the wall (I'm being realistic in what you can do in a garage, and I'm guessing what your garage is like!). Sit infront of them so that there is fair amount of space behind you but don't sit at the centre of the room - its better to be seated somewhere between the speakers and the centre of room too, rather than the centre of the room inbetween you and the speakers (if you follow me!). Now set the distance between the speakers so that there is roughly the same distance betwen them as there is to your head - so there is a equilateral triangle between your head and each speaker. Play some music, listen and then move yourself and the speakers around a bit and see what difference it makes.
Oh and its usually best to place your speakers on the longest side of a rectangular room, when there is a choice.
As a final comment on mix technique. Never forget that at the first level you are trying to make instruments sound real. There is a tendancy to try and make the instruments sound bass heavy and "full" or "shiny" with extra top-end. Firstly look for truth. Imagine what a real cello sounds like and make your recorded cello sound like this. Indeed its worth trying to mix without any eq or compression to start with. It can surprise folk how well a mix can sound this way. Punch and vibrancy can be added at the mastering stage too.
Indeed when monitoring is less than perfect always be cautious with the eq. The less you tweak the less you can mess things up!
Thanks again for your wonderful post!
I always write long posts when I'm trying to avoide work:-)

  • Installing FCS2. Did Archive and Install. Now what?

I got studio 2 today and didn't like the idea of installing it over Studio. I searched and the gurus say don't do it. I'm confused about archive and install. If I do it do I just drag all the Studio apps in the trash after I do the Archive and Install or do I drag the apps in the trash before then install FCS2.
    Any help would be appreciated.

You got that right. I cloned my drive with SuperDuper then used Migration Assistant to move all my settings and users files over. No applications where moved. It was pretty easy. I'm still loading all my programs which is a drag but everything else is already been moved and that would have been a whole lot harder to deal with. I have three users on this Mac. Lots of files and folders. This was the first time I have done this and I did learn a few things. I have been making images of all my software and the updates keeping them all in a folder on a separate drive. next time I have to do this I will just open the image and sit back. No sticking disks in. And its faster. I have Leopard sitting on my desk but not brave enough to try it out just yet. I need a stable edit bay right now. I wish I could get a Intel mac just for FCP. Now that would be sweet. The G5 is still kicken but il bet this Studio 2 upgrade will be the last one for a G5.

  • First Aid failed - now what?

While running First Aid in Disk Utility, I get a an Error message, "Disk Utility stopped verifying because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit". Before this, disk utility clearly says that various volumes need to be repaired (including my hard-drive) but because of this error I never get that far. Any ideas of what I can do to remedy this problem?

I had no intention of giving you that impression and nor do I think that. If my wording made you think that I apologize.
The hard disk inside your Mac is your start-up disk, the one you start your Mac from. It cannot repair itself, so you need instead to start up from the install disk that came with your Mac - this why it is so important to have it.
Place that DVD in your superdrive and go to the Apple menu and click on Restart. Hold down the c key on your keyboard until your Mac has started up. This will take a bit longer than when you start from your hard disk.
You are NOT going to install anything, but just select English as your language (assuming that it is!), and ignore the next (install) window that appears. Go to Utilities in the menu at the top of the screen, and go to Disk Utility. Select your Hard Disk and click on repair.
This will take a little while and you will see all kinds of messages in the window, all of which you can ignore. Finally it will say Disk Repaired, and you then restart again without holding down the c key, in order to start up again from your built-in hard disk.

  • My first designed system - now what?

I finally got around to building my own system and now want to know how to maximize my performance.
My FSB is 204MHz and my DDR is 400(Auto).
Core Center is not reporting my Processor Temps???
Should I set the bios to PERFORMANCE MODE?
Should I boost my DDR voltage and the AGP voltage?
    Thanks

First uninstall corecenter. Use something else. You will not achieve true happiness until you have done so. Second I'm assuming core center was reporting 204mhz fsb. If so, go into bios and increase it from 200 to 201 (this helps on the 875, it won't makes things worse for you anyhow) Set your AGP aperture to half the size of your system memory. Make sure 32bit transfers are enabled for all hard disks. It you are plagued by instability try raising your RAM voltage to 2.7. Don't mess with agp voltage unless you are going to oc your geforce.

    Hi Roger,
I am new to this and am in desperate need of some help.
I have created an audio file (it's an mp3) and its been loaded onto The Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/BBTheIsland001
The audio file for the podcast is: https://ia601701.us.archive.org/4/items/BBTheIsland001/B%26B%20The%20Island%2000 1.mp3
I then used Feedburner to set up an RSS on my Google Blogger page.
    My blog is: www.bergsandbaldy.com
My feed burner feed is: http://feeds.feedburner.com/bergsandbaldy
When I attempt to test the feed in iTunes by simpling "subscribing to a podcast", iTunes see's the name but does not pull the audio or the image down....
I've literally tried and tried again over several hours but am very stuck.
Any words of wisdom and advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Roger.

That shouldn't be related to Time Machine (especially if the backups aren't mounted).

    Two "by the ways":
    1) Your system details mention an PPC iMac.  Since a non-Intel Mac can't run OS X 10.6, you seem to have another Mac.  You might want to consider updating your system details.
    2) You seem to have been misled by the poor labeling of the message composition fields on this forum into trying to enter your entire post into the "subject" field.  In the future, just enter a summary of your post there and the main text into the field below it.

  • I did and Archive and Install on MBP with 10.4.11...now what?

I recently performed an "Archive and Install" on my MBP that was having odd random shutdowns (not battery related). Just prior to this I used DiskWarrior 4.0 to fix errors to try to possibly cut down on the shutoffs. All it did was f**k up my machine so bad that as soon as the grey screen and apple logo came up, it was like this grey curtain went down and an "on/off" icon came up saying I had to restart. I was never able to boot my machine off my hard drive again until i did the archive and install. Everything seems fine now.
My question is, I want to get the "old system" folder off my HD since it's taking up a lot of room. how do I know what files are critical and what ones aren't? I copied over my printers folder but all my other data seems to either be where it was before or it got moved over during the archive and install.
Any help on what i HAVE to save before i trash the old system?
    Thanks!

Cool, that was my first guess as to what to do. But now the old lockup issue has returned. I had put my MBP to sleep for an hour or so. When I came back up from sleep mode, I got the black box in the middle of the screen with the "on/off" button and the message that I had to restart or shut down. On restart when I clicked "report", the following came up in the box:

First open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:'
Look for the file named iPhotoLock.data and move it to the Trash in the Dock. Launch iPhoto and see if that helped.
If not Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Have you checked whether the emails are visible at http://icloud.com ? If they are, it's a problem between your Mac and the website; sign out in System Preferences>iCloud and sign back in again.
If they aren't, then it's a server problem and you need to contact Support. If you currently happen to have AppleCare, either because you recently bought Apple hardware or have paid to extend the inititial period, you can contact them here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/
You will need the serial number of the covered hardware.
If you are not covered by AppleCare, then - in common with other free email services - there is no free support and you may be asked to pay a fee; if so you should argue that this is a problem they've caused (it's not the first time, by the way) and you shouldn't be charged.

    This sorted it for me:
Backup your iPhone to iCloud (I believe backing up to iTunes will work too). Now go to "Settings --> General --> Reset --> Erase All Content and Settings" to completely restore your iPhone to factory settings. Assuming you've backed up to iCloud, you'll be asked when setting up your iPhone if you want to restore from an iCloud backup. Choose that option and once your iPhone has restored itself from your backup, this annoying problem will finally be gone! (was for me anyway).
To restore from an iTunes backup, connect your iPhone to your computer, load iTunes. Click the File menu and select Devices > Restore from Back up.
