I did something dumb -- HELP!

I have the messiest desktop in the world -- for a 22" cinema display (one of the old ones). I found a neat tip on macosxhints to clean up your desktop using Automator. I created an action that was supposed to find all sorts of files on my desktop and move them to newly created folders . . . to help me get organized. I have directions for .dmg, .zip, .jpg, .doc and on and on. All images were to be sent to a folder called Imagesto_befiled. This gets everything off of my desktop and I was going to run it once a day.
Well, I accidentally messed up the Automator script and instead of just finding images on my desktop, I accidentally had the .jpg script set to Computer. So, I get a spinning beachball as this thing is running for the first time. Apparently, it stumbled after moving about 12,000+ images from all over my machine. I lost images out of my Dreamweaver sites and just about any folder that had images. But, the most damaging images were the ones in folders inside of my iPhoto library. I have about 6,000 photos in iPhoto. because the Automator script stalled out (I ended up having to force quit), I still have most images in iPhoto. But, of the 6,000, i think about 300 - 400 of my iPhoto pictures were moves out and when I scroll through my iPhoto library, there is a white outline of a box where the photos should be. And, some thumbnails appear, but when I click on the thumbnail, the underlying image is no longer in the folder so nothing appears. Obviously, all of these images are sitting in my Imagesto_befiled.
I cannot undo the script, so that's out of the question. My most recent backup of the iPhoto library was Aug. So, I'll probably figure out how to replace my library with the old one and then I'll only have to fix the photos taken since then. That brings it down to about 50 pictures that will be missing.
I am wondering if anyone has any tips for how best to do this given that some are thumbnails and some are the original and even some are NEF (i shot RAW for a while)?
I don't care to maintain any albums, I just want my iPhoto library to have all of the images displayed so I can scroll through and still see the dates show up on the right. When I import the photos in the Imagesto_befiled back into the library, they all appear as though they were taken today even though some were taken back in 2002 or 2003 when they were in iPhoto before I messed it up.
Any help would be appreciate. And, I know, I know . . . I should have double-checked. Dumb, dumb, dumb! TIA.

Thank you for the reply. I am off to bed now, but I will attempt this in the morning. I forgot about the old library being iPhoto 5 as well. Whew!
I think I wrote incorrectly previously when I said, "When I import the photos in the Imagesto_befiled back into the library, they all appear as though they were taken today even though some were taken back in 2002 or 2003 when they were in iPhoto before I messed it up."
I just checked at the thousands of photos I imported into roll 267 (my newest roll) in are all appearing as though they were taken on June 10, 2002 . . . probably the date of the first image in that roll. But, that's just the little grey box that appears as I scroll through. When I click on an image, the correct Created date appears. Maybe things aren't so bad after all.
Getting the images back into the correct Rolls could take a long time, but at least I can do it now. I believe iPhoto creates thumbnails of large images as well because some of the photos are only like 24 kb while most are 4 MB. I am guessing this is the difference, so I'll have to sort by size and move the larger images back first into the appropriate folders . . . I think I can just drag the photos in as I figure them out since iPhoto thinks they're still there. And, fortunately most photos were taken with 2 cameras so the images named, "DSC_2543.jpg" and similarly are more likely iPhoto images while the named ones are probably not. Doh, I had renamed many and I think they are probably now labeled by their new title. That makes it more difficult to figure out which photos are from iPhoto and which might have been in a Dreamweaver site folder or another unrelated folder, etc. Maybe this is just something to work on over the next month . . . or more. Heh heh.
What a hassle. Lesson firmly learned. ;~)

    hello,
i was deleting some folders of my drive and accidently deleted my folder with the x on it. im pretty sure it was the os duh. i realized this after i shut it off. so now when i try to start it up it gives me a question mark and a folder flashing. i hope i didnt empty the trash but i cant remember. is there anything i can do to fix it? any help greatly appreciated.

I don't know for sure if this will work. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc One. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select the Terminal application from the Utilities menu (I'm pretty sure it's a menu choice.) After the Terminal loads you will see a prompt in the Terminal's window. I'm not sure what it will say, so for the sake of this experiment I'll use prompt> to indicate the prompt in the following. Enter the commands and press return to run the command. You need to know the volume name you have assigned to the computer's hard drive, e.g., Macintosh HD.
    prompt>cd /Volumes/volname/Users/username
Substitute your computer's drive name for "volname" and your shortname for "username"
    prompt>ls -l .Trash
Should list the contents of your Trashcan. If your system folder is in the trash you should see it listed as System. The listing will look something like this:
    drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 Feb 1 23:43 System
If there is nothing listed in the Trash, then you've deleted the System folder and you can stop here, quit the Terminal, and reinstall OS X. If you do see a listing like the one above then continue:
    prompt>mv .Trash/System /Volumes/volname
    prompt>ls -l /Volumes/volname
Verify that you now have a System folder listed on the volume. If so, quit Terminal and restart.
If you get any system error message doing the above to the effect you don't have sufficient permissions then insert the command "sudo" in front of each command line listed above, e.g., prompt>sudo ls -l .Trash. You will be asked to authenticate with your admin password that will not be echoed.
I'm pretty sure the above should work. However, I've never had occasion to try it.

  • HELP!!! I DID SOMETHING DUMB!

    TO ANYONE WHO CAN HELP,
I accidently left my laptop case with my macbook in my car today. The problem is, I live in South Dakota and it's really cold outside. I just now realized I had forgot it in there, so it's been in the cold for a good 7.5 hours.
Will this cause any permanent damage to my MacBook? I'm worried about condensation! What should I do???
Please reply if you have any advice!
    Thank you so much!
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

For future reference, here's some general advice about digital SLR cameras being used out in the cold and then brought indoors. It definitely also applies to other electronics.
Put the camera (or MacBook in this case) in a sealed plastic bag before bringing it inside, and don't open it until it's gotten close to room temperature. This will maintain the same humidity level (absolute, not relative) while it warms up. Do that, and you won't have problems with condensation.
Here's what Apple has to say about what the MacBook can handle. Has it gotten below -13F there yet?
    Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
    Storage temperature: -13° to 113° F (-24° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 0% to 90% noncondensing
    Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet
    Maximum storage altitude: 15,000 feet
    Maximum shipping altitude: 35,000 feet

  • I did something dumb.....

When I purchased a mini back in January, I had it in mind to also get the Applecare warranty. While checking online for my warranty information I find that the mini was not registered, nor was the Applecare. Thinking back, I recall that C-usa (where I purchased both at the same time) did not have the A-care in stock. For some reason, life kept me busy and I totally spaced going back for the Applecare. I'm not sure if I can go back and claim I never received it after such a long time span. For some reason, the receipt they gave me does not list the usual serial number for either the mini or the Applecare that I paid for. I did contact both Apple and Cusa. Apple told me to contact Cusa and see if I can get the serial number for the Acare. My thinking is that since they did not scan the serial number to begin with, I doubt that they know whether or not I received the box.
Looking in the mirror I see more gray hair everyday. sigh.....

    Hi Petra,
I did pay for it. I'm going to send Apple a letter along with a copy of the receipt to see if they'll be able to help me out with this. The store where I purchased the pair is unable to track any serial number for anything that I purchased. Figures! Lesson learned on my part. To think the least expensive mac I own is going to cost the most in warranty coverage. (well almost, for my Powerbook the Acare is $349) Hope Apple is kind to me.
I have until the 22nd of January 06.

  • Did something dumb.

uh... i was messing with the 'get info' in my library seeing if i could make my ipod display the proper track number, and i select alll my files, checked the box that said track number thinking i was doing a good thing. next thing i know, i just deleted all my track numbers. i know that for mac users, fixing this is as easy as using itunify; however, i am a windows user. is there an alternative program for windows like itunify, or will i be spending a good bit of time piecing my library back together?
    hp pavilion a265c   Windows XP

That depends -- if the filenames have the track numbers then you can use this program to fix them:

How can i download this portion of my system preferences so that i can again have control over my computer. any help is greatly appreciated.

As this is the Snow Leopard OS 10.6.8 forum I assume that is what you are running. You reinstall from the original install disk. Snow Leopard has never been available as a download.

  • Please help! Did something stupid

    Please help.
    I did something stupid.
I restored a previous backup onto my iphone5, without doing a backup on current first. Previous backup was about 4 months ago, and now I found that I had lost 4 months worth of photos (and videos)
Is there anyway I can retrieve those lost photos? lots of precious memories of kids and family in there. Will do anything to have them back.
P.S: Read that somewhere photos won't be lost, but apparently it wasn't so.

I kind of guessed that ....
    Excuse me while I do a silent scream ........ ...... ............ ........
curse the day I read that I can do a restore backup without doing a current backup .......
And all because some notes went missing ....
Thanks for all those who read my last rant ....

  • I did something stupid and afraid I invited virus or trojan HELP

Ok, I did something really stupid, and after a few hours of beating my head against the wall, I am reaching out here to see if anyone can calm my nerves.
I just purchased a Brother Printer and was having difficulty setting up the wireless connection. I googled "Brother printer customer service phone," and the top of the page it said, Brother Printers with a phone number. I called that number and the tech person said he needed to take control of my computer to see what drivers I needed (he comes Mr. Stupid...that would be me). The tech person directed me to download a program called Team Viewer, and after taking control, he opened the TERMINAL BASH window and pointed out to me the words, "CODE RED." He told me that I have a virus and that's why I could set up my printer wirelessly. He started telling me about a virus program, and it was at this point the my Mr. Stupid thought is this really the Brother Printer company. I hung up and called back the number 866-362-8280 and asked if they were Brother Printer. The person said they weren't that they do tech support for them and that this company is called, Alpha Systems. I looked up Alpha Systems phone number and they said that number is not there's. I called back that number and this time another person said that the name of the company was NBTECHERS. I asked if that person who took control of my computer did anything like plant a virus or create a way to see all my files, he said no (yea sure, the voice of truth?). I called Apple Care and they were terrific in helping out and walked me thorugh what Adware Medic would do automatically (my OS was too old for Adware to install) and removed all the TeamWare and everything else in the specific folders.
FINALLY, HERE IS MY QUESTION TO MY FELLOW MAC's and not as stupid as I am people:
Is there anyway other than the Adware Medic to check if there's anything this awful ripoff company did to my computer?

Unfortunately, after these scammers have had remote access, there is no way of being 100% sure that your computer is clean. AdwareMedic won't help with that, even if you were running a newer system. Neither will anti-virus software. Your system should be considered compromised at this point. You will need to erase the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch. For instructions, see:
How to reinstall Mac OS X from scratch
(Fair disclosure: I may receive compensation from links to my sites, TheSafeMac.com and AdwareMedic.com.)

  • Please Help!  My 7 year old did something with my display!

My son was using the computer and did something with the keyboard. This left my display with the areas that should be white...to black. My desktop image and ALL computer images have the graphic look of a "sketch" and what should be red, is blue. the apple logo is orange. When I use my mouse, it creates "boxes" around the icons. I have tried changing resolution, both in display preferences and in the safe mode. When I reboot the computer, I get what the display should be for a moment, then it changes. I have also tried calibrating. Please advise.
    TIA for your time!

Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences, click on Seeing, drag the Contrast slider all the way to the left and turn off the other options, except for those at the bottom.

I am trying to activate new itunes card. I am getting error message: The code you have entered has not been properly activated. Does this mean the store did something wrong or me?

Yes, the store didn't properly activate the card. If the store is nearly then you could try going back and asking them to do so, if it isn't (or if they can't/won't help) then try contacting iTunes Support (you will probably need to give them images of the front and back of the card, and possibly its receipt) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then iTunes Cards And Codes

  • White line onscreen in all applications.  I do not know if I did something or if this is some problem.  Everything seem to be working alright otherwise.  Any suggestions on how to fix this p

I have an eight year old IMAC with the Intel dual core.  Today for the first time a fine white vertical line appeared on screen in all applications.  I do not know if I did something or if this is a larger problem.  Everything  else seems to be working alright.  Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be appreciated. Thanks.

Eight-year old iMacs did not have Intel processors. Please do "About this Mac" from you Apple menu to see something like this:
Please post the "Version" under  the big "Mac OS X" and the "Processor" information. These can make a big difference in advising you how to proceed.
iOS  4.1 currently shown in you profile will not run on a  Mac computer; it is only for iDevices (Pads, Pods and Phones), so fixing that in your profile can help you get answers faster because people won't to ask for more info before forming an answer.
