I didn't change my password but my old one isn't working

i have had my ibook g4 for about 4 years now and have been using the same password on it since i got it but the other day i was studying and my screen saver came on and the next time i went to use it it asked for my password like always but it wouldn't work... i tried making sure caps lock was off and that didn't work so i tried restarting it and that didn't work either now i can't login at all
PLEASE HELP!!

Hi, katielady -
Okay.
I just registered that you have an iBook G4 model. None of the G4 iBook models, including the original one vintage 2003, are OS 9 bootable; they can use only OSX for booting. This means that my earlier reference to Multiple Users is not valid (since it pertains only to OS 9); and if you do not recall specifically setting an Open Firmware password then that does not apply either.
OSX requires a password entry every time - if the record of that got mangled somehow, that is probably what is blocking your access.
In order to fix that you will need to go through the process (it's not difficult) of changing the password. To do that you will need to boot the machine to its original installer disk set, the one that came with it. There is a procedure on the first page or so of the installer identified as Reset Password (I believe it is at Installer > Reset Password) - select that and follow the prompts.
Things that can cause files (and the data recorded in them) to go south -
• Age. A frequently used file can get damaged accidentally for no preventable reason. Good backups and a touch of fatalism address this issue.
• A drive that is too full. When a hard drive gets too full odd things begin happening. With OSX it is recommended that a minimum of 5GB be left unused on the hard drive.
• The drive's directories have become damaged. The result of this is that the OS can not find what it is looking for. To test for this, while booted to the original install disk (or to a later install disk if the OSX base version is newer than the original one, such as 10.4 vs. 10.3) and run Disk Utilitiy (it's a menu option). Let Disk Utility take a look at the drive. It will report both things it can fix (which you should let it repair) and things it can not fix (which can usually be repaired by other utilities).
