I didn't know Macs behaved like this...

Hey everyone,
I never thought I'd come to a day where a PC would be more reliable than a Mac but I guess this is the reality. I purchased my unibody Macbook approx. 2 years ago. It's had the odd crashes, applications crashing one after another etc but nothing like I've experienced a few days ago.
As I was working, all of a sudden my open applications started crashing one after the other (imaging editing software, Firefox, and then Finder). Everything started going crazy, kernel panics, would get stuck at grey startup screen indefinitely.
I decided to try and see what was wrong so tried verifying and repairing the HD, there were no problems reported. Verified and repaired permissions, some problems detected and fixed. This didn't help, it kept hanging at the startup screens, going in and out of states, like the screen would flash up like it was shutting down, then coming back to the desktop. It was going crazy.
I started it in Safe Mode a couple of times, was OK but then when you start normally, you'd get kernel panics, not leading to anything but frustration. I decided to get all my files off and reinstall OSX. I did this, and sometimes it would hang or I'd get kernel panics and it wouldn't install properly and have to be forced to shut down. I did manage to fully install it once but then again, a kernel panic happened. Basically, I tried to reinstall OSX a few times and try get it to work but there is this reccuring problem with kernel panics not allowing for progress. Some people suggest it's something wrong with the RAM. I've never forced something to shut down so many times because it just wouldn't go after 30 mins.
So what have I tried?
Hardware test at startup - no reported problems
Resetting the RAM at startup
Reinstalling OSX
Verified repaired permissions
Verified and repaired disk
I'm just so disappointed in Mac now. And frustrated. I never in a million years thought this day would come, when I expect reliabilty from a machine. Maybe this is why they only give 1 year warranty because after 2 years it could go kapot at any minute...Deeply disappointed.
Anyway, I hope someone can give me an insight at least. Thanks a lot.

If you can do so then I would try erasing the hard drive then installing Snow Leopard from scratch.
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If the drive is still working properly then the above will repair any soft defects on the drive. If all is OK then quit DU after formatting and return to the installer. Install OS X. If there are still panics then take it in for repair.

Try the following steps,
Sign into your computer and removal of credit card information. Here are the steps:
1) Open iTunes and sign in to the iTunes Store.
2) Select "View My Account" from the Store menu.
3) Enter your password and click the View Account button.
4) Click the Edit Payment Information button.
5) Select "None" as the payment type.
6) Click the Done button at the bottom of the page.

It sounds like either your hard drive or the SATA cable that connects it to the motherboard are failing. This could be heat related in your case, which is why you see it after it runs awhile. You can take it to the Genius Bar for a free evaluation. If you decide to test it yourself, I usually suggest moving the hard drive to an external enclosure. If it works there for awhile, the cable is probably the issue.

The Adobe Photoshop forums are down for an upgrade so I don't know where to post this but I need help. Since yesterday Photoshop CS4 has been showing banding in my soft brushes and gradients, it mostly comes up when I am using a dark color on another dark color or on similar colors together but it has been working fine for a very long time until yesterday where it just happened randomly. I have tried restarting, resetting preferences, installing cs3 and seeing if it happened there, and using just about every color profile I could think that would make a difference, and none of them work. Please someone help I need this fixed asap.

I have all tabs set to open with Google search, but when I open a new tab and start typing, the letters appear in the address bar and not the Google search bar. It didn't used to be like this!

One of my set of home pages is the basic Google search page. When I open this, I can immediately start typing and the words appear in the Google search box.
If however I open a new tab (white cross far right of tab bar) and start typing, the words appear in the address bar, not in the Google search box. Of course once I click in the search box I can carry on: but I'd like to make it start there as it does with the homepage.

If you want a specific webpage (like the Google page) to always open when you open a New Tab, you can use the following add-on to Open New Tabs with your Favorite Pages:

Should my UL behave like this?

Ok this is not really a "problem question" but more of a
general "is this element behaving correctly?" question..
I have created a new masthead section for my site, and have
used a right-floated UL called "rightlist" with a background image.
The UL uses padding-bottom of 46px to make the image appear fully.
Using the padding-bottom causes the UL to "overlap" the DIV's
positioned directly below and allows for a nice fluid layout.
My question is - Should the UL with the padding-bottom of
46px be overlapping the DIV below? I always thought it should
"push" the div lower down and not overlap. But I am happy with it
doing the overlapping becuase it is giving me the effect I want to
acheive!

Why does Mail behave like this?

More often than not, when I try to either respond to an email, or generate a new one, Mail just hangs. It will continue to do this until either 1) it finally gives up and says to select another server, or 2) I quit Mail, then open it again, at which point the outgoing mail swooshes away like it should have the first time. I would say this happens 8 out of 10 times.
The other thing that's driving me nuts is servers I have deleted from the server list keep coming back. I've tried repairing permissions right after deletion, but that doesn't help.
These two issues come together when I let Mail continue to try to send while it hangs, then it pops up and tells me it can't do it with that server, try another... and the servers I've deleted are back on the list again; sometimes, Mail has tried to use one of the re-appearing servers, or it'll offer one of them as an option.
THis is maddening. Anyone have an idea how I can get these things to stop?

On the Mail problem, Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
On the Server issue, are they listed in Accounts>Login Items, or set to Automount?

Why is my iPod behaving like this?

My iPod Touch 4th generation keeps popping up Voice Command by itself and keeps stopping and adjusting the volume by itself. Why is it doing this? There's absolutely no damage to it....I haven't dropped it and there's no water damage

Did you already try to reset it by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes up again? If this does not work, restore "as new ipod" without using the backup, in case it contains corrupt files.

Not a manual one where I have to activate or tell it when I switch to a program but something that will do this automatically for me.

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

Mac OSX Leopard behaving like any ordinary Windows system?!?

I have been having a variety of issues since updating to Leopard. I have been a very satisfied mac user for over 7 years with no issues or needed support. Installing Leopard has put all that down the drain. I have a Dual 1.5 ghz Power G4 and 1.5 gb of ram. This computer has enough computer power to run Leopard. With that aside, Apple now says we need to have supported video cards, only to find that out AFTER buying Leopard and installing it. How can you release an OS and have to change a video card recently purchased before Leopard.. My computer used to run flawlessly until I updated. My computer does random "PC like" freezes and I have to sit for 5 mins until it snaps to it. Sometimes just to have Safari load or to Send an email..When the beach ball comes out, (I'm never in the mood to play when it does) I can't even force quit. I have tried the reinstall, a clean install, and even reinstalling on a different hard drive, and the same issues. Yes, all 3rd party software/enhancers were erased when I reformatted my drive and did a clean install.. Also, I cannot open Activity Monitor because I get a message that my permissions need to be repaired.. OK, that would be fine, if disk utility didn't freeze also.. Leopard has some amazing ideas and great tools, and anticipated the long waited release, but if they cant be used and/or start behaving like a PC....., then what's the point?

I don't think your lockups are caused by the video card, although not having a Core Graphics compatible card will kill a lot of the new effects and make the remaining ones very jerky. In my case, I was getting the interminable hang-ups and beachballs until I did a clean install without "Archive and Install" or "Migration Assistant". I had to keep the install absolutely clean, and manually copy over documents ONLY.
Further, I found that my external subwoofer (iSub) and one of my external drives were causing problems. Much better without them.

No,
the MacPro is the muscle machine and not constrained by power or cooling limitations like the MacBoo Pro is.

If you press the MacBook Pro like a desktop machine, it will blow fans like a hurricane but will do the job eventually.
The longer you blow fans on a laptop, the sooner it clogs up with crippling dust and shortens the life of the machine.
You'll need the top end 15" or better, not the 13" as it has no dedicated graphics, only CPU graphics.
Preferably if you just now getting into video, you should be considering Avid on a Windows 7 tower, it's because Apple has been ignoring the MacPro for hardware updates to improve it and it seems like they don't want to carry it anymore. Also the last Final Cut Pro version had Hollywood up in arms as Apple removed a lot of required abilities to make it more "consumer friendly" which upset the Pro market who likes control.
Apple is focusing on the consumer computing market and getting away from the "Pro" market which needs the heavier hardware to handle video needs. They stopped selling the X-RAID and the X-Server, so Apple really isn't a "computer" company any longer.
Sure you can use a MacBook Pro and a external monitor for doing home movies and such occasionally, but if your into serious production you need to consdier other options now.
There is nothing wrong in getting a MacBook Air and a Windows 7 professional video tower too.
