I disable add ons (like a netscape one that says "known to cause security issues" and it re-enables itself the next time Firefox starts.

Add ons that cause my browser to crash will NOT stay disabled. I need to delete these add ons. How? I never wanted them and don't know how I got them but I cannot run Firefox properly.

None are '''''necessary''''' to use Firefox, but some parts of some web pages aren't going to work without a specific plugin being installed.

I figured it out...needed to use comment tool set, not the editing tool set.

  • After installing ParetoLogic PC Health Adviser, every time I run a scan and then hit "Fix All" the next time I run Mozilla all of my toolbar icons are white and I have to click each one seperately to get them to color-up again and by identifiable.

After I re-click on each white bookmark and get them all rest they are fine until ParetoLogic PC Health Adviser runs a scan again and I hit "Fix All" then the next time I open Mozilla the book mark tabs are white again.

Don't use "Fix All". That program is probably deleting the web site icons from the Firefox bookmarks file. Exclude the Firefox bookmarks file ( places.sqlite ) from the files that are "fixed".

  • Firefox won't open; tried all I found on this site; can't get in to disable add-ons.

Firefox will not open. Little wheel spins, then disappears. Nothing.
    Re-started computer - several times.
Reinstalled Firefox. Nothing. Can't open in Admin. Can't open with double click or with right-click "Open".
Many fixes on this site suggest going to the Firefox button to disable add-ons - of which I have few - however since Firefox won't start, I can't try these options.
Can't get to my profile. (Have not changed my profile or add-ons for ages.)
This seems to have happened right after the most recent update.
I've read everything I can find on this website and other places, and can't make it work.
Can't find old Firefox on program list, thus can't uninstall old version - perhaps this occurred automatically with new Firefox download?.
Ran Spybot and deleted some adware and mal-ware. Still nothing. Ran Microsoft Security - nothing.
    I'm running Windows 7.
I can't open the troubleshooting file offered below.
Firefox was working well until yesterday. Sigh. Can anyone help with this?

You can use one of these to start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u>:
*On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
*On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
*Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 22.0: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • How to Remove Disabled Add-ons

Working add-ons can be removed easily with a single button - whereas, disabled ones are not presented in the Add-on Manager with a means for removal.
Seems an oversight; but in any event, with nothing in the FAQs about removing disabled add-ons, I'm hoping someone will point the way to add-on handling details

Of course I tried uninstalling via the original install route in the originating program before coming here. ¡D ooh! There's no apparent effect.

  • Will there be an update to v29 that fixes the problem of not closing? Reset, disabling add-ons, etc, did not fix it.

After upgrading to v 29 four days ago, Firefox will not close 9 out of 10 times...get the error message that says Firefox is still running, close it or restart. The only way I have been to fully close Firefox is to force it to close by running CCLeaner or computer restart. I have tried disabling add-ons, safe mode, etc. I do not want nor should I have to lose settings by a reset. Given the other posts re: this same problem, this appears to be a Firefox v29 problem and not a user/customer problem. This is on a Win 7 machine running AVG Free.

    I have the same problems.
    Tried version 30beta without success
Have to unload the Firefox process with Taskmanager
I like the new version 29 but have gone back to trouble free version 28.
Unless the problem can be fixed I will regretfully go to Chrome.
My system is Win 7 (64Bit) with SP1 and all updates.
Extensions are ADBlock, Better Privacy, Disconnect, Self-Dectructing Cookies, Foxflag, Colorful Tabs, HTTPS-Everywhere

  • How do you completely disable the installation and use of add-ons for firefox 4? Is there a config setting/file that can be changed to completely disable add-ons?

I want to completley disable the installation and/or use of add-ons in Firefox 4. I don't want anybody that logs onto either of my computers to be able to use add-ons and I can't find a way to disable it in the configuration files. I've found ways to lock down other options like updates etc. but I cannot find a way to completely disable add-ons.

    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locking_preferences
You can use a mozilla.cfg file to lock prefs or specify default values.<br />
You can place a file local-settings.js in the defaults\pref folder to specify using mozilla.cfg.
You can use these functions in mozilla.cfg:
defaultPref(); // set new default value
pref(); // set pref, but allow changes
lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes
To prevent users from installing software use:
    <pre><nowiki> //
    lockPref("xpinstall.enabled" ,false);
    </nowiki></pre>

  • FF crashing immediately. FF updated, admin mode allowed, hardware acceleration disabled, add-ons disabled

FF crashing immediately in regular mode-- ID: 132f75b1-9f3e-46b7-9b43-74e4b2121121. FF updated, admin mode allowed, hardware acceleration disabled, add-ons disabled.
FF opens in Safe Mode, but otherwise crashes repeatedly upon opening. FF was working for up to half hour, but today (especially since FF v.17 update) crashes immediately. Along with repeated FF crashes, Win 7 crashes (less often) with a variety of notes on each crash.
    (email removed by mod)

Thanks for your response, cor-el. I had already unchecked the "Use hardware acceleration when available," yesterday, before posting here.
I had also selected ''Run as administrator,'' but I see that is now unchecked. A skilled friend tried to help overnight & may have unchecked it. She also appears to have "unchecked" the "Use hardware hardware acceleration when available," so I have, again, unchecked it.
My friend wearily said I would be unable to open the browser this morning, but it worked fine for ~10 minutes... and then Windows crashed. Firefox is working fine in Win7 Safe-Mode & fortunately did not crash before Win7-itself in regular-mode.
I'll try Win7 regular-mode, again. After working awhile, my browser froze (cursor wouldn't move). Signing back into Win7 regular-mode, FF quickly crashed twice.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Firefox opens with a window that says "Checking for compatibility for Add-ons" then it always opens 2 tabs... one with my home page and one that says Congratulations, Firefox is up

    Hi konee,
You should look at [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+has+just+updated+tab+shows+each+time+you+start+Firefox this article about that specific issue] and the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved]. These should give you all the information you need!
    If that doesn't work:
    # Type about:config in the address bar
    # Click ''I'll be careful, I promise'' if prompted
    # In the Filter input field type ''startup''
    # Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
    # Delete the text string and click ''OK''
    # Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Why is there no updates to the firefox throttle add-ons ? Is there an alternative? throttle is Bandwidth utilization throttling and monitoring extension for Firefox

Why is there no updates to the firefox throttle add-ons ? Is there an alternative? throttle is Bandwidth utilization throttling and monitoring extension for Firefox

Well, it's probably one of two things: either the awesome dude(tte) who developed this awesome extension was tired of updating or the changes in FFox software architecture carried out between version 3.x and 4+ created challenges that were too difficult for him to surmount or a combination of both. Honestly, I love Mozilla but I think they dropped the ball on the throttle issue. It's such an obvious and necessary function and it's so easy to implement. They should have included it a long time ago as in built feature. And, if you are browsing and looking at this post and you agree. Add a suggestion in mozilla.org. The more of us asking for this function, the better.
Meanwhile, I have the following solution for you:
Solution 0.6.9.23.11 (DIY Version of my Solution ):
Setting Up a Separate Portable Firefox 3.6.x that runs independently of and simultaneously to your latest version of Firefox
    Get FireFox Portable 3.6.24:
    http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/localization#legacy36
It's a portable app, meaning that it's got all it's profiles and preference and application files in the same directory. It won't compete with your current installation of Firefox, has it's own separate extension folder etc...
    Get Firefox Throttle 1.1.6
http://firefox-throttle.en.softonic.com/ (I couldn't find it in the official mozilla site)
It will be flagged as incompatible with even that old version of firefox (but it isn't). You just need to turn off compatibility checking. You can do that with this extension:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/?src=search
If you have Bookmarks you want to port to the portable (bad pun intend), backup them up to bookmarks.json file on your desktop and import them to the portable version. You can export/import more stuff using FEBE addon but that's a whole world of headaches if you don't your doing.
Many of your extensions favourites extensions will no longer work on FFox 3.6.x but if, in that same addon's page, you look around until you find a link to previous versions of the addon, you will notice that the compatibility info is right below the version numbers. Just download and install the latest version that is compatible with you 3.6.x....
Voila mon ami! Your FFox 3.6 portable has just become your own private Download Mule whom you can throttle to your hearts content (ever throttle a real Mule??? I wouldn't try it, personally...) Do your regular browsing in another (unthrottled) browser and do your big downloads in the Mule...
If you want to keep using your brand spanking new Firefox for other types of browsing while using this portable Mule edition for the downloads, just add -p -no-remote to the shortcut leading to your Firefox Portable Mule edition.
For example, my taskbar shortcut to my Firefox Portable is:
    ""C:\Program Files (x86)\FirefoxPortableLegacy36\FirefoxPortable.exe"
    I just changed it to:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\FirefoxPortableLegacy36\FirefoxPortable.exe" -p -no-remote
This will make it occupy it's own independent instance and I can use the both my Firefox Nightly and the Firefox Portable editions at the same time (each one, using a different profile ie. extensions, cookies, password, cache etc).
If you're on Linux, you can just run this on Wine and set the Windows Version to Windows 2000 in the Wine config,
If you want to get rid of the Portable Apps splash screen, click here:
    http://www.ghacks.net/2011/06/06/getting-rid-of-portableapps-splash-screens/
Solution 0.6.9.23.11 (Non-DIY Version of my Solution):
Download my preconfigured but SWAGGED-THE-HECK-UP PortableFirefox 3.6
Having realized that some of you may find the above to be daunting. I took my own customize firefox portable, took out all my data and compressed the folder (it's portable, so it'll run as soon as you unzip it).
    Here is a screenshot:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?o95nkwo8y6q535j
    Here is the download link:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?xdw87ivf3184u2s
Don't forget to modify your Start/Taskbar shortcuts:
"C:\wherever you decide to put it\FirefoxPortableLegacy36-Swagged-UP!\FirefoxPortable.exe"
    I just changed it to:
    "C:\wherever you decide to put it\FirefoxPortableLegacy36-Swagged-UP!\FirefoxPortable.exe" -p -no-remote
