I do not have audio playback on songs only on video

I just recently got a different computer at work and had to download itunes again. My music is in the cloud so that's not my problem. I am able to playback only videos and no songs. Whether they are in the cloud or downloaded doesn't make a difference. Any video I select will play but none of the songs I select will play. If I select a song to play the genius bar at the top just scrolls the diagonal lines across and the play button goes from play to pause. I can continue to hit the play button but nothing changes. There also is an exclamation mark that apprears next to the title of the song on the left side. I am not sure what that means. The audio is clearly working in all other programs and on the videos in itunes.

You can route the audio through your TV to your analogue receiver or purchase an adapter for the optical. As you have provided no further details it is hard to say much more.

make sure that you are not covering the mic on the bottom of the device and top (opposite of lock button) when recording a video.

Have you turned up the volume?
Try the buttons, or the bottom audio slider.
Does your phone normally play audio?
And have you tried to record and audio note to check if your microphone is not faulty.

The Mini Display port and Thunderbolt port use compatible connector bodies. Your current Mini Display to DVI or VGA adapter will still work as before on the newer Thunderbolt capable machines.

Audio Playback from Headphones Only - not speakers (CS6)

I prefer to work with my USB headphones, but if I need to show someone what I'm working on I'll want to be able to playback a sequence in progress through the speakers. This used to be a simple matter of unplugging the headphones and it would automatically default back to sending the audio through the speakers. But at a certain point Adobe Premiere ceased to work that way. I would unplug the headphones and it would playback with no audio. I discovered if I saved my project, closed premiere, then made sure the headphones were unplugged when opening Premiere, it would work through the speakers. Now, however, even that won't work. It just simply won't playback through the speakers - ever. Playback through the headphones continues to work fine. Audio playback from other programs continue to go through the speakers just fine.
I've gone into the audio output and output mapping preferences, and although I don't know what I'm doing there I simply tried every single option one at a time to see if it would solve the problem, but nothing changed it. Any suggestions?

Dave, I have had this problem on my MacBook Pro for many months. I've tried EVERYTHING Apple suggested - SMC reset, PRAM reset, everything EXCEPT take it in to be serviced by Apple. Here is my solution, which overcomes the hardware failure caused by the headphone jack optical sensor thinking something is plugged in there when there isn't.
If you do not want to pay Apple to fix your MacBook optical sound jack hardware, you can overcome the problem with this procedure.
This fix re-routes the output sound to the headphone jack input, and then to the speakers.
Step 1. Plug headphones in (don’t worry, you won’t use them)
Step 2. Change System Preferences -> Sound -> Change Internal Speakers to an Input!
Step 3. Done!

If you get to step 3 I recommend closing ALL the apps. Here is step 2 to get you started:
See if there is an updated version of the app on your iPhone.
Open the App Store and tap Updates. If updates are available, tap Update All. iPhone will then download and install the app updates.
If prompted, enter your iTunes Store account information. iPhone will then download and install the app updates.

Infrequently, calls will not have audio in one direction.

We're using OCS 2007 R2 with a Dialogic DMG2000 series gateway and Tanjay phones. Occasionally, I have a user who might complain that an outbound call doesn't have audio in one direction or the other. This happens once every few days. I don't see errors anywhere and the Dialogic reports that there are no call issues. The problem will clear up quickly and appears at random. We still have the old PBX up, which also flows through the same Dialogic and does not experience the issue so I believe it's buried in OCS somewhere.
How can I being troubleshooting an issue like this? Can someone point me in a direction? I want my users to have as much confidence in this solution as possible.

One way audio issues have a few common root causes to check for:
1) Communicator users can sometimes mute speakers or mic on their PC without realizing it. Also If they have multiple audio devices attached then check they one they think they are using is really the one selected. Some devices also have local
mute buttons that get selected without the user realizing it.
2) Faulty devices can cause one way audio. Switch the device for one you know that works to test this or try using Sound Recorder to record a raw audio file and then play it back.
3) PSTN gateway configuration issues. This is a tougher one to troubleshoot, but if only OCS-PSTN calls are experiencing one way audio and it happens to many different users this is a likely cause. Check the codec configuration of GW means codec choices
with the Mediation Server match, i.e. G.711 u-law or G.711 a-law are preferred on both sides. Other configuration issues are vendor specific and so you may need their help verifying the Gateway is properly setup.
4) Less commonly network issues can cause one-way audio if there are serious routing or packet loss problems in one direction. You can look for signs of this in the QoE Server report of an affected call. The "PacketUtilization" metric records the packet
count for an audio stream. (You can find details of what indiviudal QoE metrics mean here -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd819959(office.13).aspx). If further network troubleshooting is necessary you can try pings to see if network path is functioning and/or
collect network sniffs during an affected call.

No sound at all or just DVD ? Please try this first to enable Speakers in Playback devices as follows:
1. Right click speaker icon (right hand corner)
2. Select Playback devices
3. Right click Speakers
4. Enable it and set as Default
5. Click Apply/Ok

New Lenovo T430 Choppy Audio Playback of MP3s only in any program

Hello,
I am trying to troubleshoot a choppy audio playback problem with MP3 files on a Lenovo T430. The sound "skips" at regular internavls (about once a second). I have tried the following with no success:
1. Windows sound troubleshooter.
2. Playback through WMP 12.
3. Playback through VLC.
I was suprised to find the playback poor through VLC. Sound is fine when playing a youtube video. Any ideas on what next steps I can take would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Can you post the configuration of your T430? I've seen issues in similar systems configured with RAM amounts of 4GB or less and using a HDD and ExpressCache running Windows 8.

The music files, were they bought from your iTunes account or did someone gift them to you after buying from the iTunes account? If they are yours you can download them again if you clear or de-authorise the ipod, it has to be done by whoever gave you the ipod to do this (the registered owner). If they were bought for you on another itunes account I don't think Apple let you use them as they are copyrighted and they don't belong to you, they belong to the person who bought them. If the music files where ripped from music cd's then click and drag them to a new folder on your desktop and have the person who gave you the ipod to de-authorise and unregister it. Then you re register it and put your files back from your desktop folder in your iTunes folder and synch. Hopefully that would work. Any files which you did not buy, I would not know how get around this, best bet is to take it to you nearest Apple Store and explain that they were gifted to you and ask how you can use them. The best way to gift music files is to buy the gift tokens and give these. Hope above helps.
