I-Docs in Indesign?

Hi Everyone,
I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who has used Indesign to create an interactive documentary? I am currently doing this, and was hoping to connect/ask questions of some people who might have tried this.
Many thanks for suggestions!
Ann

Dear Peter
Thanks so much for replying as I wring my hands over this one!
Not so sure about the "version" I have now!
The pack says CS4, but I created the docs in a trial version of CS5 (before
my software arrived).
Just wondering if it's my lucky day and you may be able to / willing to...
open this doc and convert it to CS4.
Do you know anything about the error message that I am receiving? I have
another 7 chapters I need to convert to get this book done for a client
Really appreciate you taking the time to answer me!
Cheers
Janie

  • Is this the help docs for Indesign, on a website?

I remember a time when apps came with a help section that did more than link unusably to menu items.
Is this the help docs for Indesign?
    http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/topics.html
Why is there no interactive local help system?
I went searching for a map of the keyboard shortcuts...

    THANK YOU!!!
I thought it was me. I couldn't get that AIR app to ever finish updating.  I was hoping it would install .chm style interactive help... but now... thanks, I know not to worry.  It's a bad joke.
Someone should tell Adobe that just because they make AIR and Acrobat doesn't mean they're the ideal formats for help files.
Partially related question, is there such a thing as a good AIR app?

  • Opening cs4 docs in indesign 2.0

    Hi,
at work i am using indesign 2.0 but at home i use cs4. is there anyway to save cs4 docs so they can be viewed using 2.0?

    >is there anyway to save cs4 docs so they can be

Export PDF, place PDF into InDesign 2.0 file. Now the file can be viewed. If you want the file to be editable (not your initial request), see Robin's answer.

  • Layer problem with exporting nested Indesign Doc in indesign doc to PDF

    Hi folks,
I managed to create a PDF with very strange layer behavior... even with content that shows when ALL layers are turned off...
    Here's how I did it:
    - I placed our two page company letterhead indesign document in another Indesign document.
    - Both documents have several layers (our company use up to 8 different languages for their corporate papers)
    - The document that I exported to PDF, has itself two layers, and the nested Indesign document is exclusively on masterpages in the second layer.
    - The nested Document has 4 layers visible, but consists of around 27 layers.
    - Turning on the layer that contains the letterhead doc, correctly shows the corporate identity on all pages that are based on the master layers. Turning the layer off hides it. So far, so good.
    - I use a PDF preset which renders a PDF with following settings:
    - When opening the resulting PDF, the layers of the main document are all there, as one would expect. However, toggling the layers visibility renders a weird result... The document is 4 pages, a usage contract. You can download it from our server via this link. Now if you would toggle the layer visibility of the "letterhead_def actual" layer that is supposed to hold only the corporate identity, you will find that all works correctly for the first two pages... but on the 3rd, all contents seems to have been combined onto the second layer... and on the 4th page, the contents landed on a layer that isn't even listed in the layers panel, as turning ALL the layers off, still leaves the Terms and conditions visible...
This looks like a bug to me... I'm going to try and flatten the nested indesign document first, before I export to PDF to see what that brings, but that is of course quite the hassle.
Would be interested to see if more people have run into this thing...
    Kind regards,
    Willy

Contrary to popular belief, I am not a complete moron However, since this problem could just as well be in Acrobat as in Indesign, I thought it best to post it in the Suite forum first.
Of course I could post in both the Indesign as well as the Acrobat forum, but then I'm sure there will be helpful readers suggesting me to put it in the other. One cannot win
There for I shall leave it here for a while. If I don't get any meaningful feedback, I'll re-post it in the other Forii...
    Kind regards,
    Will

  • Importing and flowing multiple text docs into InDesign CS3

I have multiple plain text files where each runs several pages long that I want to import into one document in ID CS3. I want to import them and have them flow in a single threaded text frame one after another over multiple pages. With a single multi-page text doc all I have to do is select Place and hold down the shift key and InDesign will add the necessary pages and flow the copy until the end of the doc. However, if I shift select the docs and try import them into a text frame by holding down the shift key, it will just flow the first doc in the group with no indication of overset text. I have tried placing multiple text docs holding down the shift and command key and that brings in all my docs on the first page but in separate text boxes with overset text for each doc. Is there a way to do this in InDesign or perhaps a plugin that can do this?
    Thanks
    Randy

I tried to find this. It was posted 4/21/08 by Peter Kahrel (I can tell, because I can see my side of the discussion in my Sent folder) in response to a post I made entitled "Multiple Files". Maybe I'm not searching the forum archives properly, or maybe this was during the time last year when Adobe was trying (and failing) to update the forums. In any case, I'm sure at this point that Peter posted this for public consumption, so I don't think he's going to mind if I post it again:

Copy and paste everything between the hyphen lines (not including the hyphen lines) into a text editor and save with a .js extension and put it in your scripts folder. Should be something like:
    D:\Program Files\Adobe\InDesign CS3\Adobe InDesign CS3\Scripts\Scripts Panel
After alphabetizing your files and putting them in their own folder, copy the path and run the script. It will make a new folder and place all your files in one continuous story. I don't know how it will work with .txt files.

  • Importing Microsoft Word doc to InDesign with embedded EPS art ~ scaling issue

Hi, my workflow calls for creating content in Microsoft Word 2010 with embedded EPS art, in this case MathType 6.7a math objects. When I import these manuscripts (after saving as Word 97/2003 format) into my Adobe InDesign CS5.5 templates, the embedded inline graphics have been resized. Strangely, InDesign is keeping the container frame at the correct dimensions and then upsizing or downsizing the art inside that box.
When I export a sample graphic from the Word file and unembed the same graphic after import it into InDesign, the two graphics are different sizes. InDesign might increase the size of one embedded graphic by 400% and then scale it down to 25% inside the anchored picture box and then in the next anchored picture box it might decrease the size the art to 50% and scale it to 200%.
I did a test and created a graphic in Adobe Illustrator, saved it as EPS, placed the graphic into a Microsoft Word 2010 document, saved it out to 97/2003 format, imported that doc into an empty Adobe InDesign CS5.5 file. Again! InDesign changed the size of the art and re-scaled it to appear the same.
I've been able to duplicate this issue on InDesign CS4 also, on both Windows XP and Windows 7.
Has anyone else run into this issue? Does anyone know why the InDesign import filter doesn't import inline art in a Word document at 100%? Thanks for the help!

    My solution for this is:
    1. Place *.docx (yes, docx) word document with mathtype equations into indesign. This will set correct baseline for equations which is very important.
    2. download this scalegraphics script http://in-tools.com/downloads/indesign/scripts/ScaleGraphics.zip
    3. copy script from zip folder to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Scripts\Scripts Panel\Samples\JavaScript
    4. open palet (window/autoamtion/scripts) scripts, find new sript and run it
Voila, all equations is at 100%...
    Script explanation: http://in-tools.com/article/scripts-blog/scale-graphics-script/
In links palete equations have eps extension but this is embeded wmf files so you cant open them in photoshop or distill it with distiller.-((( I use export to pdf option in indesign to make pdf file.
If you want all this eps links to export from indesign use this method:
    1. in links palete select all links
    2. in palete menu choose "unembed link"
    3. on answer window choose "no"
    4. select folder where you want indesign save files
    5. press "select"
    6.  now you have all links in new folder unembed from indesign document and you can edit it with mathtype.

  • Why does CS6 quit when opening CS4 docs in InDesign?

We just downloaded InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat and Photoshop in Creative Cloud. But when opening InDesign docs made in CS4 the CS6 version immediately crashes. But when reopening the document is there, but nonamed and not with all links remained. Common problem?

Do you have a crash report? If so, please post it on pastebin.com and put a link here.
Do you have a font manager? If so, which one and what version? I think I remember similar reports tied to auto-activation plugins, but I'm not certain, and the crash report, if you have one, will be a lot more useful than speculation to start.

  • How to 'Paste' a Word doc into InDesign and keep all of the settings?

I've set up styles in the Word doc, that I was hoping would transfer into InDesign, once pasted. The Word doc is very large, and has hundreds of jpegs placed within it. My issue is that once it is pasted, the images are overlapping the text above it, as well as others.
How would I rectify this? ...Is this a Word settings problem, or a transferring/'pasting' problem?

    BigEnd wrote:
When pasted from Word, the graphics are Inline by default.  You can correct each one by selecting the graphic and then Anchored Object, Options and selecting Above Line (centered etc).  What I do then is create an object style to these specs and this makes it quicker to apply to the graphics.
You say that there are very many graphics in the doc - does anyone know how to make the above settings the default when graphics are pasted from Word?
    M
Thank you M, but I believe I figured it out:
I made styles in Word to make things a bit simpler when changing large sections of text, so within the settings of the images style select Format>Paragraph>Line and Page Breaks. Under 'Textbox Options' the Tight wrap defaults to 'None' - Select 'All'.
When the file is placed into InDesign, the images don't overlap, and are exactly where they need to be.

  • Editing PageMaker Docs in InDesign CS4??

I have a client with some legacy PageMaker files (PM6.0 and PM6.5) files.  He needs to have them updated.
I do NOT have a copy of PageMaker.  I seem to remember having difficulty opening PM6.5 docs in IDCS4 (Mac OSX 10.5.8), but it has been awhile.  If I recall correctly, the process bombed.  (I also have an old copy of IDCS2 for PC)
    1.  Can I open PM 6.0 and 6.5 files in Indesign CS4 and edit them?
    2.  If so, how?
    3.  Any other thoughts or suggestions?
    4.  If IDCS4 will not reliably open PM files, are there any utilities that will allow me to open or convert these files so I can edit in IDCS4?
    Thank you for you help,
    Lou Dina

    Bob/Jeff,
    Thanks for the prompt responses.
Bob....I think your link hit the nail on the head.  I was using Win XP before and things crashed when trying to open PM files in ID.  I was able to open a PM file on my Mac with IDCS4 (OSX 10.5.8). So, I was remembering old stuff from my WinXP PC.  Thanks.
Jeff, your points are also right on.  The file they sent had dead end links, so I am left with lo-rez proxies.  I will search for converters, if I need them, but at least I am half way there.
I have asked the company to use PM's "Package for Service Provider" feature to export all links, fonts, etc.  We'll see if they have the program, original files, links and expertise to do that.  I'd give it less than 50% as a betting man.
I appreciate the expert help.  Happy New Year.

  • Quark doc to InDesign doc

    Hello,
I'm fairly new to InDesign (CS3), and I need to change a Quark (v7.3) doc to a ID doc.
I must be looking for the wrong terminology in ID's help file, but I can't figure out how this is done. I'm pretty sure it's possible, even if there's a lot of realignment work to be done.
Any pointing in the right direction will be most appreciated.

    www.markzware.com.
You'll need to buy Q2ID to open that file. Buy it, install it and after
that just use the file open command.
ID can only open Quark 4.x and 3.x files natively.

  • Created doc in InDesign, made it a form in Acrobat, Now need to edit original

So I made this document in InDesign and exported it to PDF.  From the PDF, I used acrobat pro to make the document a form with fields.  I spent a long time setting it up perfectly and then realized that there is an error on the piece that was made when I originally designed it in InDesign.
Question is, how do I make this change to fix the error (a typo) without havig to re-do the entire form in acrobat?
I tried opening the PDF form in InDesign, even though I knew it wouldnt work-- and it didnt.
I tried opening the form in Illustrator, which did allow me to make the correction without messing up the form, but also messed up the graphic effects-- so that was a no go.  Any other suggestions?

Basic form fields can be copied and pasted within Acrobat.
Re-export your revised document from InDesign, into a new PDF, and open it in Acrobat.
Open the old PDF with the form fields, and switch to the Object Select tool in BOTH windows (the large blue arrow icon).
Click your form fields to select them (they'll highlight), and copy them using Ctrl-C or the right-click menu.
Toggle to your new PDF and paste them (Ctrl-V). They won't retain their position but you can drag them into place using the Object Select tool.

  • How to print Indesign 1 built 20 pg. doc. using Indesign 4, saddle stitch on color copier????

I have a document built in the first version of Indesign. We have two Macs (OS 10.4.11).  My employer purchased a Sharp/COECO brand 6200 color copier/printer (a big boy!).
The #1 criteria for purchasing that equip. was that it had to successfully print our annual president's report. (After Sharp delivered the copier/printer, things went down hill starting with day one. Bad motherboard in machine; got new motherboard. Output quality shifted causing uneven margins on large posters (11x17) went sent directly from the Macintosh and it gets worse.) Long story short, our Sharp folks said it was because we were operating with Indesign 1 that the features for creating a saddle-stitch job appear grayed out (selections are shown, but we could not select them). Just last week we purchased Indesign 4. Installed it. Tried the very same steps as we tried with Indesign 1. Areas to select to create a booklet using saddle-stitch feature are still grayed out.
    Document information: 20 page, single-page built 8.5 x 11 document (built using Indesign 1).
    Cover Paper (for pages 1 & 20 and 2 & 19) : 80# Futura Laser Dull
Content Paper (for pages 3-18) : 80# Futura Laser Text
We want 700 copies of a 20 pg. document. We were instructed by our copier tech/specialist to print the covers separate (since they were to be a different weight paper). So I created an 11 x 17 horizontal layout to place my already built 8.5 x 11 single pages into so they would be printer spreads (the only way I knew to do it). Pages 20 & 1 were side one; pages 2 & 19 were side two. I printed one side first, then the other, as our copier will not duplex automatically.
The theory from our copier tech was that we would load the covers into the by-pass tray and those would pull (to be added to the content pages to be saddle stitched) once I sent the pages 3-18 (still in a single page format) from my mac to the new copier/printer. The software from my mac would "talk" to the software on the copier/printer and the copier/printer would know to impose, place my letter-sized pages into printer spreads. Made sense to me.
When we attempted to do all of the above, options that I needed to select for making it into a booklet, saddle-stitched, etc. were grayed out. After countless suggestions (with no solutions ) from our copier tech., they quickly washed their hands of the situation and stated that it was not their product but an issue with our mac. End of story.
We have 700 covers already pre-printed (containing pages 20 & 1, 2 & 19).  I need to know if there is anyone out there who might have had a similar issue when trying to create a saddle stitched book, designed in Indesign 1, printed in Indesign 4 on a copier/printer that supposedly can do such as mentioned??If so, i need and appreciate all help, feedback, suggestions, recommendations as soon as possible. This job must be ready by Monday, Nov. 16, 2009.
Our only other option at this time is to set pages 3-18 up as printer spreads, print them on the 80# Futura Dull Text paper (will yield me 4 printer spreads) and pair those with the first printer spread (20 & 1 and 2 & 19), which will then be a total of 5 printer spreads and carry it to a local printer who will graciously collate, fold, and saddle stitch for only $85.
Please help and many, many thanks for all who can assist! I certainly appreciate it!

    Daniel,
Thank you SO MUCH for your options and quick reply to my post! I'm nearly at my wits end ... our Command Workstation is also loaded on the only PC in my department. When you said it could be printed using Acrobat, I guess you mean just the plain old, basic Adobe Acrobat that one would use to open PDFs in? I'll give that a try first. If I've misunderstood you, please don't be afraid to correct me .... again, thanks!

Several options come to mind -
The copier engine and RIP are in charge of the imposition and duplexing from your single page file and should be available from any program ie: Word, Open Office, Acrobat. Could you print a 8 page file from any other program and have the features available?
Your support points the finger at the MAC drivers; do you have a PC in the facility to check the imposition and duplexing ability?
The job could be printed from Acrobat as easily as from InDesign if drivers are to blame.
Is the Sharp accesible/driven by a stand alone program ie: Command Workstation? You would be able to spool the page file and make the options from there.
FYI, 2 things you can expect and should check with from your local printer about the booklet making - A decent shop will score the covers before the gather, stitch and fold yeilding a nicer crease (no cracking along the spine). (I'm assuming your 80# Futura Dull is a cover weight as opposed to text weight.) Also, you should be getting a face trim to eliminate the creep from the inside pages - a clean polished outer edge. You Sharp can do neither and it is your annual report.

  • Is there any way to save separate pdf docs in indesign cs6 at one time?

  • Importing multiple Word docs into InDesign

    Hi there
Is it possible to import multiple Word documents into a single InDesign text frame all at once?
I have 20 files that all flow sequentially so was wondering if -- by selecting them all in Place window -- they would all be brought in one after the other, without each one creating its own new text frame.
    Any help gratefully received.
    Thanks
    Dan

I use the script, below, for that. It's a bit scruffy, it should be tarted up. But it works fine. When you start it you type a path/file mask, using the formats illustrated in the dialog.
It sets a few import preferences, these are the only ones I'm interested in. But it'll pick up the other options from their current settings.

  • Place specific page of multiple InDesign docs in InDesign?

    Hello.
I have 100 2-page InDesign documents. I would like to place page #2 of all 100 documents into a new document. I'm placing these documents into InDesign at once (via the ability to place multiple documents), but when I choose "Show Import Options" to select page #2 of the documents, I have to do this one-by-one for each of the 100 documents. Is there a way to apply the import options to all 100 documents, or do I have to do this manually, one at a time?
I had hoped that if I set the import options for the first file, then deselected import options for the remaining 99 documents (doing a multiple document import), my original import options would stick, but they don't.
So, hoping someone might know of a better way of doing this rather than having to set the import options for each of the 100 documents I'm importing.
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Scott Zanelli's MultiPageImporter (sth like that ) is rumoured to be able to do this. (Read the Comments section.)
